Joe Root scored his 39th Test century, paying tribute to Graham Thorpe, who died by suicide. Root wore a bandana in Thorpe's style, highlighting mental health issues in cricket.
On Sunday, seasoned England batter Joe Root scored his 39th Test century and paid tribute to former England batter Graham Thorpe, who died by suicide on August 4, 2024. Root honoured Thorpe, whose birth anniversary was two days prior, by wearing a bandana in his style on the fourth day of the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval.
Root anchored England's second innings and established a crucial partnership with Harry Brook. Together, they shared a 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Root reached his century with a double in the 60th over, bowled by Akash Deep. He achieved his hundred off 137 balls, hitting 12 fours.
What particularly caught the eye and earned appreciation from England fans was his tribute after reaching the century. Root kissed the badge on his helmet, raised his bat to acknowledge the crowd's applause, then donned the 'Graham Thorpe headband' and pointed skyward.
Watch:
Thorpe was a premier batsman for England in both red-ball and white-ball cricket from the mid-90s until 2005 when he retired. He served as the batting coach for the England Test team until he was dismissed, along with other support staff, following England's 0-4 defeat in the Ashes series of 2021-22.
Thorpe, aged 55, died by suicide by stepping in front of a train. His family publicly disclosed that he had been struggling with mental health issues to raise awareness.
By paying tribute to Thorpe upon completing his century, Root has brought attention to the mental health issues increasingly affecting cricketers due to the demanding lifestyle and various formats of the modern-day game.
The left-handed batsman, who spent his entire professional career in south London with Surrey, scored 6,744 Test runs at an average of 44.66 in 100 matches from 1993 to 2005.
Thorpe later held various coaching positions, including a role as England's batting coach, where he worked with current players such as Test captain Ben Stokes and Root.

I Took 20 Wickets In BGT Sir: Mohammed Siraj Hits Back At Reporter Questioning His Form

IND vs ENG: Mohammed Siraj delivered a sensational performance on the final day of the 5th Test at The Oval, guiding India to a nail-biting 6-run win over England. With England chasing 374, Siraj's fiery spell shattered their resistance as they folded for 367 in 85.1 overs. This triumph marked India's narrowest-ever win in Test cricket, sealing the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2 and etching the victory into the annals of Indian cricketing history. Siraj Claims Five, Ends Series as Leading Wicket-Taker Siraj was instrumental in India's comeback, finishing with five wickets in the innings and 23 wickets in the series more than any other bowler. His final-day scalps included Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton, and Gus Atkinson, the last of whom was dismissed by a scorching yorker that sealed the game. With this performance, Siraj became only the third Indian pacer after Kapil Dev and Jasprit Bumrah to take more than 20 wickets in multiple Test series. Siraj Shuts Down Reporter Who Questioned His Form During the post-match press conference, Siraj addressed criticism over his showing in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. 'I took 20 wickets in BGT, sir,' he clarified. 'When Jassi bhai (Jasprit Bumrah) was bowling well, my only job was to bowl in partnership as much as possible.' Siraj also emphasized the importance of control in tough conditions. 'I didn't want to try too much because if I tried hard, I could leak runs and allow the pressure to shift.' Kohli's Praise: 'Siraj Puts Everything on the Line' Former India captain Virat Kohli, who has long been a vocal supporter of Siraj, was quick to laud the pacer on social media. He highlighted Siraj's grit and dedication in a post on X, saying, 'Special mention to Siraj who will put everything on the line for the team. Extremely happy for him.' Kohli praised the bowling duo of Siraj and Prasidh Krishna for engineering a collapse from 317/4 to 367 all out a moment that turned the match and brought India level in the series. A Breakthrough Overseas Tour for Siraj The Oval Test was not just a win for India, but a personal milestone for Siraj. Bowling the most overs among all bowlers across both teams in the five-match series, Siraj solidified his position as India's go-to pacer in overseas conditions. With consistent performances in both Australia and England now under his belt, Siraj's stature as one of India's elite red-ball bowlers continues to rise.

Mohammed Siraj Called 'Pantomime Villain' After Heroic Show: 'People Love To Hate Him'

Last Updated: Mohammed Siraj's stellar performance in the 5th Test against England led to a 2-2 series draw, taking 23 wickets. Mohammed Siraj has become the toast of Indian cricket following his gust-busting spell in the 5th Test that concluded with a remarkable win for the tourists and a 2-2 conclusion to their five-match series with England. Siraj finished the tour with 23 wickets and kept hitting the headlines with his performance and histrionics. He took a six-fer at Edgbaston, a five-over at Oval and then had skirmishes with England batters including Ben Duckett. He was punished for his aggressive send-off to Duckett with the two brushing shoulders. He was left crestfallen after becoming the 10th Indian wicket to fall in the unluckiest of fashion at Lord's that sealed a thrilling England win. He dropped a catch of Harry Brook on the fourth day of the 5th Test which, again, left him devastated. Brook went on to score a century – an innings that seemed to have put England in the driving seat in the hunt of another 350-plus chase. Monday was Siraj's redemption as he starred in India's defense of 35 runs on the final day as the visitors knocked down the remaining four wickets to ensure the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ended on level terms. And former England captain Nasser Hussain has praised Siraj, drawing comparisons with the legendary Shane Warne who was loved and hated by fans in equal measure. Daily Mail. 'He's a born entertainer, but crucially he's got all the other attributes you need at the highest level: heart, passion, and ultimately skill," he added. Hussain then shed light on how Siraj has polished his skill to outfox the best batters of this generation. 'He's (Siraj) gone from being a hit-the-deck bowler using wobble seam to trap people LBW – as he did with Joe Root – to one who has developed outswing so big that Shubman Gill wasn't interested in taking the second new ball," he wrote. Then, there is the fabulous yorker, such as the one to Crawley late on day three. He went to it again just before midday, knowing that Gus Atkinson was trying to hit him over midwicket for a second six that would have tied the game, nailing it under the most immense pressure," he added. Hussain said the series was the best since the Ashes 2005 which England won in dramatic fashion. 'The fifth morning was so dramatic that you really couldn't script it, concluding the best series I've seen since 2005," he wrote. view comments First Published: News cricket Mohammed Siraj Called 'Pantomime Villain' After Heroic Show: 'People Love To Hate Him' Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
