London to Paris or Milan? Eurostar rival sets out new plans for high-speed European links from St Pancras

Yahoo08-04-2025
Italy's national rail operator has announced plans to take on Eurostar by running high-speed trains between London and Paris by 2029.
It is also considering further extensions of the route to Lille, Lyon, Marseilles and Milan – and could also see trains stopping at Ashford in Kent, which has not been used by Eurostar since the start of the pandemic.
The announcement is the latest to boost hopes of a major breakthrough in cross-Channel rail travel.
Last week The Standard revealed the hopes of the boss of St Pancras station to have a 'turn up and go' service that enabled travellers to arrive 15 minutes before their train departed.
The FS Italiane Group, also known as Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, already holds a 30 per cent stake in Avanti West Coast, the long-distance operator on the West Coast Main Line, and owns the c2c railway between Fenchurch Street and Essex through its subsidiary Trenitalia.
Earlier this month the FS Group reopened its spectacular Frecciarossa Paris to Milan service across the Alps. The route had been blocked by a major landslide two years ago.
The firm, which is the first 'alternative operator' on the French high-speed network, also operates a 'shuttle service' between Paris and Lyon and will launch a Frecciarossa connection between Paris and Marseilles on June 15.
The possibility of rival train firms entering the cross-Channel route from St Pancras have increased with the indication from the Office of Rail and Road that there may be spare capacity at the Government-owned Temple Mills train depot in Leyton for other operators in addition to Eurostar.
FS Italiane Group said it had signed a 'memorandum of understanding' with the Spanish rail firm Evolyn, which went public in 2023 with its plans to operate international trains from St Pancras.
However Evolyn has fallen behind in its initial aim to start running services from 2025. It is not clear whether it will now merge its plans with those from the FS Group or whether the two firms will remain separate but work together.
A merger would place the new partnership in competition with the Virgin group to be the first to run trains in competition with Eurostar.
The FS Group said it was investing a billion euros in building a 'more integrated, competitive, and sustainable European rail network'.
The new London to Paris service would use Frecciarossa-inspired trains, which run in Italy with a top speed of 186mph (300kmph).
The aim is to lure air passengers to the railway using high-speed international trains.
Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, FS Group chief executive, said: 'This investment is a decisive step forward in FS Group's vision of building a more integrated, competitive and sustainable European rail network.
'High-speed rail networks are the backbone of efficient and environmentally friendly mobility, and by expanding our presence on key corridors, we are not just investing in infrastructure and innovation, but also in the future of European transport.
'More competition will help to create a more efficient and customer-oriented industry, offering a real alternative to air travel.'

Trump administration sanctions Mexico over air carrier trade pact

The Transportation Department has announced a series of actions against Mexico for violating a years-old bilateral air carrier trade pact. The department said Mexico has not been in compliance with the airline competition agreement since 2022 when it took back some slots for flights for U.S. air carriers at Benito Juarez International airport in Mexico City and forced U.S. cargo planes to shift their operations to other parts of the city. 'Since 2022, Mexico has altered the playing field significantly for airlines that reduce competition and allow prominent competitors to gain an unfair advantage in the U.S.-Mexico market,' a release from the Transportation Department said. 'The United States and Mexico have an air services agreement... that commits both parties to a liberalized operating environment for all has walked away from its commitments.' Mexico has said it rescinded the slots to make room for construction at the airport, but the work has yet to materialize three years later, the transportation department contended. 'By restricting slots and mandating that all-cargo operations move out of [Mexico City International Airport], Mexico has broken its promise, disrupted the market and left American businesses holding the bag for millions in increased costs,' the release continued. The 'America First' actions enacted by the Trump administration require Mexican airlines to file schedules with the transportation department for all of their U.S. operations, mandate prior DOT approval before operating any large passenger or cargo aircraft charter flights from the United States and addressing anti-competitive issues in the market. Mexico seized slots from U.S.-based carriers American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines, as well as from three Mexican airlines -- Aeromexico, Viva Aerobus and Volaris -- to make room for the construction. 'Despite repeated outreach from the Department, Mexico has not provided any information regarding when these slots would be returned or any major construction projects at MEX will ever materialize,' the release continued. Duffy added that the United States is also reviewing trade agreements with other countries to determine if they are being violated, including pacts with some European nations. Bugatti Unveils New Atelier In Molsheim Ahead Of Tourbillon Production

Bugatti doesn't just build cars - it builds temples to speed, craftsmanship, and engineering theater. And now, nestled in the historic grounds of Château Saint Jean, the French marque has unveiled its latest monument: a new, world-class production facility designed to usher in the age of the isn't just an upgrade. It's a statement. The new atelier blends contemporary architecture with Bugatti's natural surroundings in Molsheim, Alsace, where the brand has operated for over a century. Stretching 132 meters in length and cloaked in wild grass that crawls over 30% of its sloping roof, the building seems to rise gently from the landscape, mirroring the restraint and purpose behind Bugatti's latest hypercars - especially the newly revealed Bugatti Tourbillon. The workshop's sleek exterior - darkened walls paired with glowing glass panels - hides an interior designed with equal precision. Expansive eastern windows draw in the morning sun, while ceiling skylights flood the hall with daylight throughout the day. The result is more than just a pleasant workplace. It's an environment that inspires the roughly 50 craftspeople who will assemble some of the most complex machines on Earth. Inside, the new atelier doubles Bugatti's previous production capacity. The company has brought more of the manufacturing process in-house, streamlining everything from sub-component construction to final body-chassis integration. It's the most advanced setup in the company's 116-year history - and that history is front of mind as Bugatti transitions from the final, celebratory Chiron to the future-forward Tourbillon. While the new facility focuses on engineering excellence, the former Macaron-shaped atelier has found a new calling: guest experience. The old building will become a showcase of Bugatti's legacy, offering visitors a glimpse into cabin assembly and design detail - a uniquely Bugatti blend of luxury hospitality and hypercar a fitting tribute to a space that helped birth record-breakers like the Chiron Super Sport and Mistral, the latter of which recently reclaimed the title of world's fastest convertible. "We are currently steering the biggest Bentley design revolution in our history," says Frederic Daul, Director of Operations at Bugatti - although to be fair, this is more than just a revolution. It's a redefinition. With the Tourbillon's mix of 1,000-hp V16 combustion and 800-hp electric assistance, and with production set to begin later this year, Bugatti is building both the car and the facility worthy of its next brick and pane of glass in this atelier is part of that story. A new chapter in Molsheim is being written - one where timeless craftsmanship and cutting-edge tech collide under one beautifully sloped roof. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc.
