Tom Cruise is back to doing what he does best — defying gravity and box office expectations. On Day 16, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One pulled off yet another high-octane stunt at the Indian box office. After a mid-week slowdown, the film has bounced back with style, raking in a cool Rs 90 crore so far.
Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible 8 entered the third week in India on a strong note. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie and co-written with Erik Jendresen, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning marks Tom Cruise's final outing as the legendary spy Ethan Hunt. The film also stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett.
The film pocketed Rs 3.65 crore on Day 15 (third Saturday) and followed it up with a slightly better Rs 3.75 crore on Day 16 (third Sunday), according to early estimates. That pushes the total India collection to a solid Rs 90.45 crore across all languages.
The final chapter in the Mission: Impossible saga kicked off with a decent run when it hit theatres on May 17. Fans rushed to catch Tom Cruise back in action as Ethan Hunt, pulling off gravity-defying stunts and intense fight scenes like only he can. The film had a strong start, bringing in Rs 54.4 crore in its first week.
All eyes are on whether The Final Reckoning can keep up the pace and cruise its way to the Rs 100 crore mark in India.
Ahead of the release, Tom Cruise had left Indian fans delighted by speaking in Hindi during a promotional video. 'Main aap sab se bahut pyaar karta hoon. Mujpe bharosa karo, ek akhri baar (I love you all a lot. Trust me one last time)," he said. He also shared his fond memories of visiting India, adding, 'I feel so much love for India. I have to say the whole experience has been etched in my memory. Every single moment. From the moment I landed, going to the Taj Mahal, and spending time in Mumbai, I remember each moment quite vividly."

I am an Indian first and everything else later. Feels good to say that. Am proud that I am an Indian. I am a nationalist, and love to be one. India is in my DNA. Not everyone needs to say that, or feel that for sure. This is something very personal. Nationalism and a feel for the nation must not be thrust upon you. You must feel it, if at all. And you don't need to feel it all the time as well. You don't need to wear jingoism on your sleeve, do you? Even as I write this, there is noise around Diljit Dosanjh. Dosanjh is a star who represents Punjabi culture to the Indian and global audiences. He does say, at every show, that he is a Punjabi. He represents the culture proudly. How is it a crime to represent your roots, then? He is the first Punjabi artist to perform at the Coachella fest in the US. The first to make an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. These and his recent appearance at the Met Gala in New York are all personal milestones that put Punjab on the world map, in his own words. At the Met Gala, Dosanjh presented himself in an ivory-and-gold sherwani paired with a tehmat (draped bottoms) and a sweeping cape embroidered with the silhouetted map of Punjab—not of India. His turban completed the look and around his neck hung a copy of the famed Patiala necklace. What's wrong with representing Punjab? What's wrong with wearing Punjab on your cape? Is Diljit a Punjabi first and an Indian later? And is that a crime of omission or commission? Think about yourself, then. Who do you think you really are? And who do you pretend you are? I hear this title as a social introduction at the many meetings I attend in Dubai and the rest of the UAE all too frequently. The Malayali is proud to be a Malayali, just as a Kannadiga is proud to be a Kannadiga. But what are you first— a Kannadiga or an Indian? Are you a Bengali from India or an Indian from Bengal? And does it matter at all?
