Workers honored at Workers Memorial Day event in Terre Haute
The program featured music, remarks from members of the community and union leaders, as well as a reading of the names of local workers who died from workplace injuries. It also included proclamations from the Mayor's Office, the Vigo County Council, and the Terre Haute City Council. Workers Memorial Day was established by the AFL-CIO in 1989, to recognize and honor the thousands of workers who die on the job each year.
Todd Thacker with the I.B.E.W Local 725, said that this is event is to recognize those workers.
'You know I spent my life and my career, and I'm retired now. And those people who came before us are the one who set forth some of the benefits that I was able to enjoy. And so I'm just trying to do the same thing, just leave it a little better than I found it,' Thacker said.
According to the news release, more than 5,000 workers die on the job per year in the United States. Safety Director for the I.B.E.W 725 Eric Biernbaum said that worker safety is very important in his industry.
'The mortality rate was one in two and so now the mortality rate is much, much greater than that with electricians. And so, but it's always been something that's at the forefront of our trade,' Biernbaum said.
Workers Memorial Day also celebrates the start of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA.

Community event looks to combat food insecurity in Vigo County
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An event taking place next weekend, will promote a program combating food insecurity in Vigo County. On June 18, a community event called 'Twilight in the Garden' will be held at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. The event will feature guest speakers, teaching how you can plant your garden to benefit pollinators in the area. It will also include a tour of the fairgrounds Giving Garden. 'This event is really important to showcase the garden and everything it does for our community but also encourage others to work with their community partners and get out there and be active in the community,' said Tabby Flinn, Agriculture and Natural Resource Educator. Local students battle through Reading Boot Camp
CLINTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — This week, a boot camp is taking place in Clinton, but no one has signed up for the army. Local students went through a boot camp at the Learning and Training Center at Hillcrest this week, not to be soldiers, but to be scholars. The founder of the camp, Kathleen Simpson, said the kids are taught a number of different things. 'We do phonics, comprehension, spelling, cursive handwriting, and we even do math boot camp too', Simpson said. 'Every year it just keeps growing.' Reading Boot Camp is a week-long learning session for students, ages 3 through 17, to keep working their brain when school is out for the summer. This year's theme focused on how the United States was born. 'It's entitled 'Hooray for the USA', Simpson said. 'They have learned so many things about our founding fathers this week.' The week is completely free for families to have their children attend, as volunteers and local officials, like Sheriff Mike Holtkamp, lead the way. 'I just enjoy it, hanging out and working with the kids, watching them progress as the week goes on', Holtkamp said. 'We get to form those relationships with the kids in the community, so when they see us out, they come up and talk to us and say hi. It's just a better working relationship with the community.' Drill Sergeant Paula Watson said the week gives students a break from home distractions that many of them need. 'We provide a safe space for them to learn', Watson said. 'When we shut the doors, the world does not exist except in this room, and they know we love them and only want what is best for them.' Benefit cookout rescheduled to Sunday
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)—A fundraiser to help the family of Tamiya O'Quinn, who was killed in an accident last Saturday, has been postponed until Sunday. A benefit cookout was supposed to be held earlier Friday, but had to be rescheduled due to the weather. The proceeds from the event will help her family pay for funeral expenses. The cookout will take place this Sunday at Baesler's Market in Terre Haute. You can get an Angus beef hot dog or hamburger along with chips and a drink for seven or organizations needing five or more meals can call Baesler's to place an order.
