
Ithra's Japan Cultural Days draws more than 200k visitors to Dhahran
The event, which began on Jan. 23, attracted more than 200,000 visitors in its first 10 days.
Japanese Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Morino Yasunari toured the exhibitions, engaged with artists and cultural representatives, and highlighted the importance of strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.
His visit underscored the significance of the festival in fostering dialogue and mutual appreciation.
The program featured a wide range of activities for both children and adults, ensuring an engaging experience for all ages. Families took part in hands-on craft workshops, traditional calligraphy, origami and manga drawing sessions, while younger visitors enjoyed storytelling sessions featuring Japanese folktales and legends.
One of the most anticipated performances came from Drum Tao, the globally renowned Japanese drumming ensemble known for its powerful stage presence and theatrical performances.
The group combined traditional taiko drumming with modern choreography and lighting effects, delivering a high-energy spectacle that captivated audiences.
A metaverse experience in Ithra's plaza allowed visitors to explore virtual Japanese markets and cultural celebrations.
The festival also explored Japanese storytelling through literature and anime. Several sessions on Japanese literature highlighted its unique introspective nature, referencing authors like Haruki Murakami.
Music played a central role in the festival, with performances ranging from the meditative tones of the shakuhachi flute to high-energy drum ensembles. Visitors also explored Japanese culinary traditions, gaining insights into the precision and artistry behind dishes such as sushi and wagashi.
One of the most celebrated workshops covered kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. Attendees were invited to transform shattered ceramics into decorative pieces, embracing the philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection.
Ithra's Japan Cultural Days featured many other activities, ensuring that visitors could engage with Japan's cultural heritage through a variety of creative, educational and interactive experiences.

Held at the Expo Exhibition Center, the Welcome Zone greeted guests with authentic Saudi hospitality, including 70,735 cups of Taif Rose Lemonade—crafted from 800 kilograms of fresh lemons—served to visitors. The event also featured live performances by Saudi artists and musicians from the Heritage and Music Commissions, along with a fashion showcase highlighting 10 prominent Saudi designers in partnership with the Fashion Commission. In the Main Exhibition area, guests enjoyed 29 cultural dance shows, 21 artisan sets, and 44 live oud performances, alongside highlights of Saudi Arabia's key tourism destinations such as Diriyah, Jeddah, the Red Sea, Aseer, and AlUla. Additional attractions included a cultural photobooth, giveaways, and the Arts of Arabia experience. The Sports Hub Zone spotlighted Saudi Arabia's growing sports tourism offerings, including the Esports World Cup, the Formula 1 Grand Prix, and the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2034. A fan-favorite was a simulated photo opportunity in Cristiano Ronaldo's changing room. 'We are honoured to offer Japanese visitors at Expo 2025 a glimpse into the Wonders of Saudi Arabia's tourism,' said Dr. Ghazi bin Faisal Binzagr, Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to Japan and Commissioner General of the Saudi Pavilion. 'Through this initiative, we hope to inspire more Japanese travelers to explore the Kingdom's rich heritage, natural beauty, and world-renowned hospitality.' The initiative coincides with the 70th anniversary of Saudi-Japan diplomatic ties in 2025. Saudi Arabia recorded a 7% increase in Japanese visitors in 2024 and operates a dedicated tourism office in Japan. Japanese citizens are eligible for the Kingdom's eVisa program, which offers one-year multiple-entry access for stays up to 90 days. Wonders of Arabia is one of 700 events featured at the Saudi Pavilion, which has welcomed over 1 million visitors since the Expo's opening in April. The pavilion will continue to host live cultural performances and exhibitions until the Expo concludes on October 13.

The Saudi Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka has unveiled its cultural exchange program amid a growing number of visitors that surpassed a million since April, according to the Saudi Press Agency. Cultural Exchange Program The cultural program seeks to provide various opportunities for professional and personal development among staff from participating pavilions. The program also unleashes new horizons for sharing the Kingdom's rich cultural heritage and global influence with a new group of team members. Crucially, the inaugural phase consists of 13 Saudi staff members distributed across five international pavilions. Meanwhile, 15 visiting international staff members will spend the next three months rotating in key roles within the Saudi pavilion. Moreover, the program is expected to include additional participants in subsequent rounds. Through an interactive module, the program will provide visiting international staff with a comprehensive on-site induction training on Saudi culture. The training features significant topics related to occupational health and safety, an overview of the pavilion's operational objectives, as well as specialized site-specific training, such as visitor experience management. Saudi Pavilion The pavilion, designed by Foster + Partners, features the Kingdom's unparalleled heritage and cultural aspects. Being the second largest pavilion after Japan, the Saudi pavilion boasts more than 700 events, such as dance shows and live performances.
