Boundary wall at Madhya Pradesh's recently inaugurated Rewa airport collapses after heavy rain
Officials said the collapse occurred following a spell of heavy rain that caused rivers in Rewa district to overflow, submerging low-lying urban areas and displacing several families. The high-velocity water current breached a large stretch of the airport's perimeter wall, pushing a parked car several feet and causing motorcycles to float in the floodwaters.
Airport officials confirmed that around 5 feet of water entered the premises during the night.
'Heavy rain, similar to what we experienced last year, led to water gushing into the airport from nearby Umari village. The impacted section is at the lowest elevation of the boundary wall,' Navneet Chaudhary, senior manager at Rewa Airport, said, adding that the boundary wall was designed primarily for wind and structural weight resistance, not for withstanding high-velocity water flow.
Built at a cost of nearly Rs 500 crore, Rewa Airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, marking a major infrastructural milestone for the Vindhya region. However, even before its official launch, questions were raised about the structural integrity of the facility.
Responding to the allegations, airport authorities maintained that the wall's failure was not due to construction flaws but rather to extreme weather events.
'We cannot blame the construction quality entirely. Had we known in advance about the high flow of water from the village side, we would have installed grills up to the half-wall height,' Chaudhary said. He further stated that the damaged portion would be reconstructed with modifications, including the installation of grilles, which would allow rainwater to pass through without exerting pressure on the structure.
'Next time this won't happen, as the water would pass through the grill and pressure won't come on the wall,' he said.

Additionally, 44 people lost their lives in road accidents, which have sharply increased due to the slippery terrain, poor visibility, and road damage caused by relentless rainfall. The worst-hit district remains Mandi, accounting for 17 rain-related deaths, followed by Kangra with 14 and Hamirpur with 7. Other fatalities occurred in Kullu, Bilaspur, Una, Shimla, Chamba, and Kinnaur districts. Officials also confirmed that more than 184 people have been injured, and damages worth over 784.6 crore have been reported to both public and private property across sectors including roads, agriculture, power, education, animal husbandry, and rural infrastructure. The SDMA noted 31 flash floods, 22 cloudbursts, and 18 major landslides during this period. The authority has deployed rescue teams, and restoration efforts are ongoing in many blocked road sections and flood-hit regions. The Himachal Pradesh government has urged residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay alert to official weather warnings. Relief and ex-gratia payments are being distributed to affected families. Earlier, PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh announced interim relief of Rs 2 crore for severely affected assembly constituencies and Rs 50 lakh for others for emergency infrastructure repair. The state has appealed to the Central Government for increased support, stressing that the crisis transcends political lines and demands collective action. 'This is not the time for political rhetoric. We must rise above party lines and ensure relief reaches every affected citizen,' Singh urged. The SDMA has advised residents to avoid travel in high-risk zones, especially near hillsides and rivers, as rainfall is expected to continue. 'The state government has decided to provide Rs 7 lakh to families whose houses were swept away due to floods and heavy rains. This announcement has been made by the Chief Minister,' Himachal Pradesh's Minister for Revenue, Horticulture, and Tribal Development, Jagat Singh Negi, told ANI in an interview. According to the updated SDMA report, released by the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) under the Revenue Department, 61 out of the 105 deaths recorded between June 20 and July 14, 2025, were caused by rain-related disasters, including landslides, cloudbursts, flash floods, drowning, fire incidents, and electrocution. The remaining 44 deaths were caused by road accidents, which have spiked due to slippery terrain, poor visibility, and infrastructure damage from heavy rainfall. As per the SDMA report, the ongoing monsoon spell has injured over 184 people and caused estimated damage of Rs 784.6 crore to public and private infrastructure, including roads, power lines, water systems, agricultural land, animal husbandry units, and schools. Manali highway blocked again, commuters stranded for 8 hours; over 190 roads remain disrupted
Shimla: Reopened after more than 24 hours Sunday evening, the Chandigarh-Manali highway was blocked again Monday morning at 4 Mile near Pandoh in Mandi district following a landslide. The road closure resulted in a massive traffic jam as commuters were stuck for more than eight hours. The debris clearance work was also delayed due to shooting stones. The highway reopened around 1.30 pm Monday. "Constant rain and shooting stones hampered the road clearance work as it was very risky. Still, we managed to reopen the highway by 1.30 pm. We also diverted small vehicles through alternate routes via Kamand-Kataula or Gohar-Chailchowk, but heavy vehicles remained stuck on the highway," said an official of the Mandi district administration. Meanwhile, a total of 192 roads remained closed in Himachal Pradesh on Monday, with the highest 146 roads still shut in the flood-affected Mandi district. Road connectivity is still to be restored in the Seraj area of Mandi district, where 91 link roads remained blocked on Monday. Power and water supply also remained disrupted in Mandi district.
