Funeral Remembers Grapevine Lake Victim Ava Moore With Full Military Honors
Moore's funeral took place at The Met Church in Fort Worth at 3:30 p.m. on May 31, according to a statement from Amanda McNew, media manager for Grapevine Police. Since Moore was preparing for the Air Force Academy, as The Dallas Express previously reported, the United States Air Force gave her '[f]ull military honors' outside the church at the end of the service.
'The family has asked for privacy as they grieve the loss of their daughter,' McNew wrote in the statement. 'Ava's loss has been deeply felt throughout our community.'
Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne, a Republican, posted on X in honor of Moore. 'Ava Moore's Coming Home memorial was held today along with full military honors,' the congresswoman wrote. 'May she rest in peace and her family be blessed by her wonderful memory.'
Kayakers met on Grapevine Lake on May 31 to remember Moore, scattering pedals on the water in her honor. Soon after the tragedy, Moore's family emphasized faith and forgiveness, as The Dallas Express reported.
'This is a difficult time for all involved, but also an opportunity for our beautiful girl to continue to impact our community,' her family said in a statement at the time. 'Out of this tragedy, God will make good, and that only can be accomplished through forgiveness.'
While Moore was kayaking on Grapevine Lake during Memorial Day weekend, she was struck and killed by a jet ski allegedly operated by Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez, an illegal alien from Venezuela, as The Dallas Express reported at the time. The man who allegedly helped her flee the scene – committing a hit-and-run in the process – is Maikel Coello Perozo, another illegal alien from Venezuela. Under former President Joe Biden's administration, they unlawfully crossed the border in 2023, and officials captured and then released both of them.
Gonzalez and Perozo fled the scene, sparking a multi-day manhunt. As The Dallas Express previously reported, police arrested them May 27 in Dallas. ICE lodged immigration holds with the suspects, who are now 'in removal proceedings.' They were initially held at the Grapevine Police Department but have since been transferred to the Tarrant County Jail.
Gonzalez faces a manslaughter charge with a $500,000 bond, according to jail records. Perozo faces a charge of collision involving damage to a vehicle with a $2,500 bond and a charge of hindering apprehension/prosecution with a $750 bond.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott previously suggested the death penalty for the suspects, as The Dallas Express reported at the time. Andrew Mahaleris, Abbott's press secretary, emphasized in an email to The Dallas Express that 'Texans deserve protection from unchecked criminal activity.'
'The State of Texas has no tolerance for heinous criminals who kill Texans,' Mahaleris said in an email. 'The victim's family deserves swift justice, and the criminal illegal immigrants should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.'
McNew asked the media to respect Moore's family and their privacy during this difficult time.
'We ask all media outlets to honor that request with care and sensitivity,' she wrote. 'The Grapevine Police Department remains committed to supporting her family and thanks members of the media for their continued compassion and respect.'

Trump presses Grassley to end Democrats' veto power on district judges, US attorneys
President Trump late Tuesday pressed Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to end the panel's 'blue slip' tradition of allowing home-state senators to veto nominees to district courts and U.S. attorneys' offices. 'Chuck Grassley, who I got re-elected to the U.S. Senate when he was down, by a lot, in the Great State of Iowa, could solve the 'Blue Slip' problem we are having with respect to the appointment of Highly Qualified Judges and U.S. Attorneys, with a mere flick of the pen,' Trump posted on Truth Social. Trump fumed that Democrats such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and Sens. Tim Kaine (Va.), Cory Booker (N.J.) and Adam Schiff (Calif.) have used blue slips to block 'Great Republican candidates' and said the practice is 'probably Unconstitutional,' even though the Supreme Court has held that both chambers of Congress can set their own rules. Traditionally, the Senate Judiciary Committee's chairmen haven't proceeded on federal district-level judicial and prosecutorial nominees unless both senators representing the state where those districts are located return blue-slip documents signing off on the nominees. Trump this month was forced to withdraw the nomination of his former defense lawyer, Alina Habba, to serve as a federal prosecutor in New Jersey after Booker and New Jersey Sen. Andy Kim (D-N.J.) opposed her nomination. Schumer also refused to return blue slips consenting to Trump's nominations of Jay Clayton to be the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and Joseph Nocella Jr. to be U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York. Schumer blasted Trump's picks as being driven by 'blatant and depraved political motivations' that he called 'deeply corrosive to the rule of law.' Clayton previously served as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and does not have any criminal law experience while Nocella served as a prosecutor in the Eastern District from 1991 and 1995 and has been active in local Republican politics. A spokesperson for the 91-year-old Grassley said the chairman has moved several of Trump's U.S. attorney nominees in Democratic-led states. 'Chairman Grassley has already successfully moved U.S. Attorneys through committee who have received blue slips from Democrats, including Senators Warner and Kaine of Virginia and Klobuchar and Smith of Minnesota. When a nominee comes out of committee all 100 senators have a say on the nomination and part of their consideration is based on the home state senators' input,' the spokesperson said.

Senate Democrat: Emil Bove ‘genuinely bad guy'
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) condemned Tuesday confirmation of controversial nominee Emil Bove to serve as a judge on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, after a series of whistleblowers accused him of a history of malfeasance. 'This is a genuinely bad guy,' Whitehouse said late Tuesday in an appearance on MSNBC's 'The Briefing.' 'He was in the Department of Justice for all of six months and managed to rack up three separate, significant episodes of prosecutorial misconduct,' he told host Jen Psaki, adding, 'I mean, most prosecutors go a lifetime without doing that.' Bove has been the subject of three different complaints in recent weeks. Two alleged he encouraged others to violate court orders, and another accused him of misleading Congress on the Justice Department's (DOJ) dropping of bribery charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D). 'This was like big deal, first principles violated, real problems. A fake criminal investigation, dangling another investigation over the head of an elected official to try to get him to comply on policy stuff, and then the famous, 'You know, you got to be ready to tell the courts F you if they disagree with Trump,'' Whitehouse said, referring to a whistleblower report alleging Bove used expletives to direct DOJ employees not to comply with court orders. 'And then, aside from those three prosecutorial misconduct episodes, he wouldn't say a word about what he did with the Epstein files during all those months when he was their prime custodian,' the Rhode Island senator added. Many of his Democratic colleagues agreed and were outraged after Bove's confirmation succeeded in a vote along party lines. Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine) voted against his appointment. 'They reward a man, credibly accused of wanting to lie to judges, with a black robe and gavel of his own,' Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on the floor after the vote. 'And they're confirming him for one reason only: Mr. Bove is loyal to Donald Trump, therefore Donald Trump wants him on the bench,' he continued. 'The calculus is as simple as that.' Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said in a post online ahead of the vote that the confirmation process was rushed to prevent any additional reports of Bove's misconduct from being unveiled. He also blasted his GOP colleagues after his confirmation. 'Republicans just voted to confirm Emil Bove. Despite whistleblowers confirming he urged them to ignore court orders,' he wrote later Tuesday on social platform X. 'Despite it being clear he lied to the Judiciary Committee. And despite the danger he poses to the rule of law. The corruption of the bench continues.' More than 900 former DOJ attorneys had also urged the Senate to reject Bove's nomination to the lifetime judicial appointment.

New Texas Congressional map will create five districts Trump carried by double digits
The 30 -day special session called by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is scheduled to end on Aug. 19, which gives state lawmakers a few weeks to finish the process. Congressional maps are redesigned at least once a decade, in response to the U.S. Census in what is typically a politically rife process. Ohio is also redrawing its maps ahead of 2026, and Democrats across the country are mulling ways to fight this existential threat as they grasp for control over the House next year. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies will be in Austin on Wednesday to meet with Democratic Texas lawmakers to discuss how to respond to the GOP's redistricting project. Democrats are debating walking out of the 30-day special session, which would deny Republicans the quorum necessary to approve the maps. Though incumbent-versus-incumbent battles are often a result of redistricting, the person said the pending map is not expected to create any Republican primaries. The person added that the new map creates smaller geographical districts and splits fewer counties than the one in place. Republicans are expected to reveal the Congressional lines as early as Wednesday afternoon. Trump would have carried three of the new GOP districts by 10 points, and the other two by more than 15, the person said.
