Gwent girls team unveiled ahead of Street Child World Cup journey
The event introduced the 10 girls aged from 14 to 17, who were selected to take part in the tournament in Mexico City organised by Street Child United.
Cllr Sue Edmunds, Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: 'This is more than football - it's about empowerment, equality, and giving young people the platform they deserve.
'These girls are ambassadors for Blaenau Gwent and for children's rights around the world.'
The Blaenau Gwent team will not only compete in football matches but also participate in a festival of arts and a youth-led Congress focused on children's rights.
The Football Association Wales is providing sponsorship of £5,000 towards the trip but the team is looking for more sponsorship opportunities. If you are interested, contact Kristian Gay at kiristian.gay@blaenau-gwent.gov.uk or call 07412 614067.
Team member Lilly-May York said: 'This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us. We're proud, we're ready, and we can't wait to represent our community in Mexico City.'
A big supporter and mentor for the team is Neville Southall, former Wales and Everton goalkeeper, who works for Blaenau Gwent Council as a sports, health and wellbeing employability ambassador.
He said: 'I'm absolutely delighted that Blaenau Gwent Youth Service has managed to win a place in the Street Child World Cup in Mexico City, it's the first time I think that a female team from Wales has got to a world cup!
"For the 10 girls and staff it will be an unbelievable experience and history making for our area and country. The team must raise some of the money, so any donations are welcome, and there are sponsorship opportunities so get on board with our history making girls.'
The team who will compete are: Sienna-Mae Cripps, Darcy Gallier-Morgan,
Lexi Hamer, Emily Brown, Ayva Batkin, Alexandra Carpe, Peyton Ayears, Ruby Jarett, Lilly-May York and Phoebe Lane.

Wrexham are weighing up a £3million offer for Hull City defender Alfie Jones. The 24-year-old left-back has 33 caps for his country and the deal could rise by up to £1.5m with bonuses.

Wales Under-20s rounded off their Six Nations Summer Series with a narrow 24-28 defeat by Italy Under-20s in Ystrad Errichiello touched down midway through the opening half, with Lavinia Pratichetti converting as Italy led 7-0 at the Centre for Sporting Wales hit back with their first try through Molly Wakely on 25 minutes, with Savannah Picton-Powell's score and Hanna Marshall's conversion five minutes before the break putting the hosts 12-7 ahead at Italians restored their lead with a try from Chiara Cheli and a second conversion from Pratichetti shortly after the lead changed hands a further three times in quick succession as Cheli scored her second try of the contest in between tries from Seren Singleton and Chiara Pearce - Ffion Williams adding the extras for the Cheli completed her hat-trick in the 74th minute - with Pratichetti maintaining her 100% record of converting - as the Italians snatched a late ensured Liza Burgess' side ended their campaign with just one win from their trio of fixtures having lost 27-10 to Ireland in their opener before beating Scotland 52-20 in their second in the day, Ireland secured an emphatic 62-7 victory against Scotland, with England rounding off their campaign against France at 18:00 BST.

Welsh wipeout in Lions squad reflects sorry decline from nation's storied history
When the British & Irish Lions last won a Test series in 2013, Leigh Halfpenny scored a record 49 points and fellow Wales international Sam Warburton captained the side to glory in Australia with Warren Gatland coaching. Twelve years on, for the first time since 1896, not a single Welsh player will be represented in the Lions' matchday squad for Saturday's first Test in Brisbane. Jac Morgan's omission is a sign of rugby's decline in Wales in recent years, a far cry from the glorious 1970s when household names like Gareth Edwards, Barry John and JPR Williams were indispensable figures. There was always a distinct possibility of a Welsh wipeout though, with scrum-half Tomos Williams, one of only two Wales players on the plane to Australia, already out with a torn hamstring. However the Lions coach, Andy Farrell, refused to play into the narrative, claiming Morgan was 'as close as you could imagine' to getting selected. 'Look, you're gutted for players like that and Josh [Van der Flier] as well, and Henry [Pollock] as well, because they're playing good rugby and could easily be in this side on Saturday,' Farrell said. 'But I suppose that shows the good place we're at as a group.' With Morgan sidelined, Tom Curry has been handed the No 7 jersey. There are 11 players from Ireland, nine from England and three from Scotland in the Lions' matchday 23. It's a poor reflection of Welsh rugby, especially given the heroics of the 1971 Lions tour to New Zealand when a team packed with Welsh talent such as the aforementioned trio famously earned their only series win over the All Blacks. Even on the most recent tour in 2021, six Welshmen led by captain Alun Wyn Jones started the final Test against South Africa, ending in a 19-16 defeat, with Welsh fly-half Dan Biggar emerging as the top points scorer that year. On the past seven Lions tours dating back to 1997, five Welsh players (Neil Jenkins, Stephen Jones (twice), Halfpenny and Biggar) were the top Test points scorers. Since then, the drop off has been steep. Wales have only just halted a dismal 18-game losing streak, while the Welsh Rugby Union is considering reducing funding for their teams over sustainability concerns. It is undeniable that their halcyon days are long gone, although Farrell said he based his decision on individual performances. 'Honestly, as far as selection is concerned, we can't get involved in that because you take every individual as it is. Who deserves to get picked,' he said. 'It just so happens that Jac was unbelievably close and in great form so there's not much more he could have done.'
