Spotify, EA Sports test in-game music integration in Saudi Arabia
LONDON: Spotify and EA Sports have launched a pilot project that allows players to link their Spotify accounts directly with the EA Sports FC 25 video game.
The feature is being rolled out in Saudi Arabia and selected other markets.
The project, which was announced on Thursday, enables Spotify Premium users to log in via a new tab in the main game menu and control music playback during gameplay, including during team selection or from the pause menu.
The Swedish music platform said the partnership aimed at offering players more control over their in-game audio.
It said: 'Long seen as the perfect companion to gaming, music boosts focus, amplifies adrenaline, and heightens the emotional highs of every match.
'Through this collaboration, players can now curate their perfect in-game soundtrack, listening to the artists they love.'
Podcast access and curated playlists will also be available.
The feature is currently accessible to Premium users playing EA Sports FC 25 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in Saudi Arabia and Australia.
The Kingdom has become a growing market for gaming and electronic sports, driven by a young and tech-savvy population.
Gaming now plays a prominent role in the Kingdom's Vision 2030 diversification strategy, with plans for the sector to contribute more than $13 billion to the economy and create tens of thousands of jobs, according to Savvy Games Group.
Riyadh hosted the inaugural Esports World Cup last summer, a large-scale tournament featuring 23 events across major titles including Fortnite, Call of Duty, and EA Sports FC, with a record-setting prize pool of $62.5 million.

Streaming platform Deezer starts flagging AI-generated music
PARIS: French streaming service Deezer is now alerting users when they come across music identified as completely generated by artificial intelligence, the company told AFP on Friday in what it called a global first. The announcement by chief executive Alexis Lanternier follows repeated statements from the platform that a torrent of AI-generated tracks is being uploaded daily — a challenge Deezer shares with other streaming services including Swedish heavyweight Spotify. Deezer said in January that it was receiving uploads of 10,000 AI tracks a day, doubling to over 20,000 in an April statement — or around 18 percent of all music added to the platform. The company 'wants to make sure that royalties supposed to go to artists aren't being taken away' by tracks generated from a brief text prompt typed into a music generator like Suno or Udio, Lanternier said. AI tracks are not being removed from Deezer's library, but instead are demonetised to avoid unfairly reducing human musicians' royalties. Albums containing tracks suspected of being created in this way are now flagged with a notice reading 'content generated by AI,' a move Deezer says is a global first for a streaming service. Lanternier said Deezer's home-grown detection tool was able to spot markers of AI provenance with 98 percent accuracy. 'An audio signal is an extremely complex bundle of information. When AI algorithms generate a new song, there are little sounds that only they make which give them away... that we're able to spot,' he said. 'It's not audible to the human ear, but it's visible in the audio signal.' With 9.7 million subscribers worldwide, most of them in France, Deezer is a relative minnow compared to Spotify, which has 268 million. The Swedish firm in January signed a deal supposed to better remunerate artists and other rights holders with the world's biggest label, Universal Music Group. But Spotify has not taken the same path as Deezer of demonetising AI content. It has pointed to the lack of a clear definition for completely AI-generated audio, as well as any legal framework setting it apart from human-created works.

Google says it has resolved global service outage impacting multiple platforms
Alphabet's Google said on Thursday it had resolved a brief global service disruption on its platforms that affected multiple services such as music streamer Spotify and instant messaging provider Discord. 'The issue with Google Chat, Google Meet, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Cloud Search, Google Tasks, Google Voice has been resolved for all affected users,' the company said. 'We will publish an analysis of this incident once we have completed our internal investigation.' The outage disrupted services on platforms such as Spotify, Snapchat and Discord that rely on the tech giant's cloud managed services and infrastructure. Google Cloud's dashboard said engineering teams were working to resolve a few services still seeing some residual impact. The outage began around 1:50 p.m. ET and there were 14,729 reports of Google Cloud being down in the US around 2:32 p.m. ET, according to tracking website At the peak of the disruption, there were about 46,000 outage reports on Spotify and 10,992 on Discord in the US As of 6:18 p.m. ET, Spotify showed a little over 1,000 reports, while Discord outages had come down to 200. Massive Google Cloud outage disrupts popular internet services
NEW YORK: Popular online services across the globe were disrupted Thursday due to ongoing issues at Google Cloud. Tens of thousands of users of Spotify, Discord and other platforms began noticing issues with their services early in the afternoon, according to Downdetector, which tracks outages. Outage reports for music streamer Spotify in particular, peaked around 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time before dropping off, and some users began saying their access was restored. Google's Cloud status page said an incident with their systems affected clients in the US and abroad. The company also posted that services are starting to recover after its engineers identified and began to mitigate the issue. 'We have identified the root cause and applied appropriate mitigations,' Google Cloud said. It added that there is no estimate for when the issue would be fully resolved. Google Cloud, which hosts a significant amount of services on the Internet, has become the fastest growing part of Alphabet Inc., even though the company still makes most of its money from Google's ubiquitous search engine. Google Cloud's revenue last year totaled $43.2 billion, a 31 percent increase from 2023. By comparison, Alphabet's overall revenue grew by 14 percent last year.
