Pahalgam terror attack: Bangladesh condemns 'mindless act of violence'

Bangladesh joins its neighbours Nepal, Bhutan, China, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Pakistan in condemning the Pahalgam terror attacks
New Delhi
Bangladesh on Wednesday strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, joining the list of India's neighbours to denounce the incident in which 26 people were killed.
In a statement issued by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dhaka said, 'Bangladesh strongly condemns the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir in India resulting in the tragic loss of innocent lives. Bangladesh extends deepest condolences to the families of the victims and expresses heartfelt sympathy to all those affected by this mindless act of violence.'
Bangladesh further expressed its 'unwavering commitment to the global fight against terrorism".
Earlier, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Pakistan condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan also condemned the attack on tourists. In a statement the ministry said, "Such incidents undermine efforts to ensure regional security and stability."
Palagam terror attack
The attack took place around 3 pm on Tuesday when terrorists opened fire at tourists gathered at Baisaran, a scenic meadow known as 'mini Switzerland' for its lush landscape and panoramic views. The site, located six kilometres from Pahalgam, is a major draw during spring and summer.
Among those killed were an Indian Navy lieutenant and an Intelligence Bureau officer. Survivors recounted harrowing scenes, with some stating that the attackers asked for names before shooting. A survivor told news agency PTI that her husband was shot in the head, with at least seven others injured nearby.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the banned Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Pakistan's foreign ministry issued a statement sharing its condolences with the tourists who lost their lives. "We extend our condolences to the near ones of the deceased and wish the injured a speedy recovery," it stated.
Jammu and Kashmir on high alert
Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his visit to Saudi Arabia and returned to India, while Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman rushed back from the United States in light of the incident.
Political parties and civil society groups in Kashmir have called for a complete shutdown, with peaceful protests and mass closures of shops, schools, and businesses reported in several areas.

India, Maldives to boost bilateral cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture

New Delhi: The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between India and the Maldives to enhance bilateral collaboration in the fields of fisheries and aquaculture aims to promote sustainable tuna and deep-sea fisheries, strengthen aquaculture and sustainable resource management, foster fisheries-based eco-tourism, and support innovation and scientific research across both the countries, the government said on Saturday. The Department of Fisheries and the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources of the Maldives have signed an MoU to enhance bilateral collaboration in the fields of fisheries and aquaculture. The MoU is part of six MOUs exchanged between India and Maldives during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to the island nation, according to Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. Key areas of collaboration outlined in the MoU include value chain development, mariculture advancement, trade facilitation, and capacity building within the fisheries sector. As part of this initiative, the Maldives will scale up its fish processing capabilities by investing in cold storage infrastructure and strengthening the aquaculture sector through hatchery development, improved production efficiency, and the diversification of cultured species. The collaboration also will facilitate training and knowledge exchange programs, with a focus on capacity building in aquatic animal health, biosecurity screening, aquaculture farm management, and specialised technical fields such as refrigeration, mechanical engineering, and marine engineering to support long-term skills development within the sector. According to the ministry, the cooperation reflects the shared vision of India and Maldives to build a more resilient, innovative, and sustainable future for the fisheries industry. Several agreements across diverse sectors were signed which reaffirmed the bilateral partnership between India and Maldives. These include agreement for a Line of Credit (LoC) of Rs 4,850 crore to the Maldives; amendatory agreement on reducing annual debt repayment obligations of the Maldives on Indian government-funded LoCs; to launch the India-Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA)-Terms of Reference; MoU on cooperation in the field of Fisheries and Aquaculture; MoU between the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Maldives Meteorological Services (MMS), Ministry of Tourism and Environment; and an MoU on cooperation in the field of sharing successful digital solutions implemented at population scale for digital transformation, among others.

Pakistan says it's close to U.S. trade deal, Washington gives no timeline

Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said on Friday (July 26, 2025) the United States and Pakistan were "very close" to a trade deal that could come within days, but comments from the U.S. after Mr. Dar met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned no timeline. Also Read | Pakistan says it held productive trade talks in Washington "I think we are very close to finalising a deal with U.S. Our teams have been here in Washington, discussing, having virtual meetings and a committee has been tasked by the prime minister to fine-tune now," Mr. Dar said in a discussion at the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington. "It's not going to be months, not even weeks, I would say (just) days," he said. Under U.S. President Donald Trump, Washington has attempted to renegotiate trade agreements with many countries that he threatened with tariffs over what he calls unfair trade relations. Many economists dispute Mr. Trump's characterization. The U.S. State Department and Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, in separate statements after Mr. Rubio's meeting with Mr. Dar, said the two stressed in their discussion the importance of expanding trade and ties in critical minerals and mining. A post by Mr. Rubio on X after the meeting and the State Department's statement mentioned no timeline for finalizing a trade deal. The Pakistan Foreign Ministry also said Mr. Dar "appreciated the pivotal role" by Mr. Trump and Mr. Rubio "in de-escalating tensions between Pakistan and India by facilitating a ceasefire." The State Department statement did not mention India. Mr. Trump has repeatedly taken credit for the India-Pakistan ceasefire he announced on social media on May 10 after Washington held talks with both sides. India disputes Mr. Trump's claims that the ceasefire resulted from his intervention and trade threats.
