MS Dhoni turns 44: A look at magnificent career, accomplishments, records of 'Thala'
Rated highly for his calmness under pressure which would make most crumble helplessly, and his tactical excellence, Dhoni, since his international debut in 2004 till now, during these last few years of his career with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has made a name for himself as one of India's most beloved sons, who has given back to his country and city of Ranchi, everything it could have asked him for.
With 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals and 538 matches across formats for India, Dhoni is not only amongst the world's greatest players but also a revolutionary.
Besides Australia's Adam Gilchrist, he was among the first wicketkeeper-batters who showed the world that keepers could bat really well. At a time when the bare minimum of catching and stumping was required out of a wicketkeeper, Dhoni pushed the envelope further, contributing runs with the consistency and hunger of a top-order batting giant. He formed a formidable middle-order with Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina.
Dhoni's strongest format is the ODIs. In 350 ODIs, he scored 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57. He scored 10 centuries and 73 fifties for India, with the best score of 183*. He is India's sixth-highest scorer in ODIs (with Sachin Tendulkar at the top with 18,426 runs). The fact that he managed to score 10,000-plus runs at an average of over 50 while coming down the order makes his statistics even more astonishing.
He led India in 200 ODI matches, winning 110, losing 74. Five games were tied, while 11 failed to produce a result. He has a winning percentage of 55. Dhoni has won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013 for India as a skipper.
Dhoni, known as Chennai Super Kings' 'Thala' (leader), played 98 T20Is for India, scoring 1,617 runs at an average of 37.60, at a strike rate of 126.13. He has two half-centuries in the format, with the best score of 56. He was the winning captain of India's ICC T20 WC 2007 winning team. 'Mahi' led India in 72 T20Is, winning 41, losing 28, one being tied and two failing to produce results. His win percentage is 56.94.
Coming to his long-format career, Dhoni played 90 matches, scoring 4,876 runs at an average of 38.09. He scored six centuries and 33 half-centuries, with the best score of 224. He is the 14th-highest scorer for India in Tests.
As a captain, he led India in 60 Test matches, out of which they won 27 matches, lost 18 and drew 15. With a win percentage of 45.00, he is one of India's most successful skippers across all eras. He led Team India to the number one ranking in the ICC Test Rankings. He is also the only Indian skipper to whitewash Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, doing so in the 2010-11 and 2012-13 series.
Dhoni is just as reputable in franchise cricket, being the sixth-highest run-getter in IPL history, with 5,439 runs in 278 matches at an average of 38.30, including 24 fifties, at a strike rate of over 137. He has secured five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles with CSK, making the franchise one of the most popular entities in the sporting world, largely on the basis of his own brand and name. Crowds follow and different fan clubs chant 'Dhoni' 'Dhoni' in unison when the batting legend makes even as much as an appearance inside his dressing room, gearing up for a possible chance at batting.
When Dhoni broke into the national team in 2004, nobody could have imagined the heights the then-23-year-old would go on to achieve as a wicketkeeper-batter. His quickfire stumping and catching abilities, massive sixes, and the trademark helicopter shot will no doubt stay fan favourites for generations to come. (ANI)

New Delhi: On the 44th birthday of former India captain MS Dhoni, South Africa legend AB de Villiers recalled him as an 'intimidating player to play against' while adding that he had a 'fantastic career'. Dhoni's international career highlight was his three coveted ICC titles - 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy - as captain along with other bilateral and continental achievements. 'It was very difficult to plan for MS Dhoni. When he was on song, nothing worked. Later on, we discovered that sometimes you could get away with wide deliveries with the seam, especially in the back end of his innings. We tried it. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. "The guy's class - not many game plans worked against him. I have a lot of respect for him and his achievements throughout his career. He was definitely an intimidating player to play against. What a fantastic career he had," De Villiers said on JioHotstar's '7 Shades of MS Dhoni'. Former India selector and cricketer Kiran More recalled his first impression of Dhoni and said he saw a spark in the wicketkeeper-batter and felt something special about him. "At that time, if you looked at our batting order, you had Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman - all these players. Yuvraj Singh was also there. But I felt we needed an aggressive player, who could come and hit fours and sixes, utilise the Powerplay, make runs in 15 overs, and also in the middle overs. "We were looking for someone who could hit sixes and boundaries — that kind of aggressive player wasn't visible. See, the top players were all of one mold. But MS Dhoni's strength — that power-hitting — we were looking for a different kind of player like that, to balance the batting order. "If you want to make 100 in 10 overs, you can. We gave many wicketkeepers chances, but the spark we saw in Dhoni — I felt this boy is something special, something different. We were taking chances. He was raw. From there, we picked him and gave him a chance," he said. Former India batter Mohammad Kaif, speaking on the same show, looked back at Dhoni's iconic breakthrough performance against Pakistan during the tour of India in 2005 and the surprise promotion up the batting order. 'Matches against Pakistan are always pressure matches - Ganguly thought, let's promote MS Dhoni up the order. He might play a cameo. No one knew he would hit 140. No one in the dressing room knew. First surprise - he's at number three. Then he starts hitting. He used to hit lofted shots - over point, over mid-off. We thought this guy can't play a long innings. How wrong we were! As his innings progressed, he kept hitting - in the Powerplay, spinners, fast bowlers - everyone got hit. "After the Powerplay, he still kept playing his shots, rotated strike, hit more. He knew he had to play fast, but also knew that a quickfire 30 wasn't enough. He knew it was a do-or-die match. If he flopped at number 3, he wouldn't get further chances because he had already gotten a few earlier. He didn't play under pressure; he played his natural game," he said. Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame last month along with Hashim Amla, Matthew Hayden, Graeme Smith, Daniel Vettori, Sana Mir and Sarah Taylor. Across formats, Dhoni accumulated 17,266 runs, effected 829 dismissals behind the stumps, and played 538 international matches — a testament to his consistency, fitness, and longevity. "It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world. To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever," Dhoni had said. Though Dhoni has retired from all forms of international cricket, but he is consistent with IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, whom he led to five titles. ICC appoints Sanjog Gupta as their Chief Executive Officer
New Delhi [India], July 7 (ANI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday announced the appointment of Sanjog Gupta as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). A highly respected figure in the global media, entertainment, and sports ecosystems, Sanjog will assume office on July 7, 2025, becoming the seventh CEO of the ICC, according to a release from the ICC. Sanjog Gupta currently serves as CEO of Sports & Live Experiences at JioStar and brings with him over two decades of cross-functional experience. Sanjog is a visionary leader with proven expertise in building successful consumer franchises and is widely regarded as one of the architects of the modern sports ecosystem in India. ICC Chairman Jay Shah said, 'I am pleased to announce that Sanjog Gupta has been appointed as the CEO of the ICC. Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialisation, which will be invaluable for the ICC.' 'His deep understanding of the global sports as well as the M&E landscape, combined with his continued curiosity about the cricket fan's perspective and passion for technology, will prove essential in our ambition to grow the game in the coming years. Our goal is to move beyond traditional boundaries and establish cricket as a regular sport in the Olympics, growing its expanse across the world and deepening its roots in its core markets,' Shah added. Sanjog's appointment follows a global recruitment process launched by the ICC in March. The role attracted over 2,500 applications from candidates across 25 countries, reflecting the international appeal and significance of the position. The ICC's HR & Remuneration Committee carefully reviewed and shortlisted 12 candidates, whose profiles were then shared with the Nominations Committee comprising ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja, ECB Chair Richard Thompson, SLC President Shammi Silva, and BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia. After a rigorous short-listing process, the Nominations Committee unanimously recommended Gupta. This recommendation was subsequently approved by ICC Chairman Mr Jay Shah after further assessment and evaluation, after which it was ratified by the full ICC Board. Sanjog Gupta, ICC CEO-designate, commented, 'It is a privilege to have this opportunity, especially at a time when cricket is poised for unprecedented growth and enjoys the passionate support of almost 2 billion fans worldwide. BRS leader KTR lauds Indian team for record-breaking victory over England

India's triumph not only levelled the five-match series 1-1 but also marked their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The emphatic nature of the win drew widespread acclaim, particularly for skipper Shubman Gill, who scored 269 and 161 in the two innings to lead from the front, and Akash Deep, whose 10-wicket match haul was instrumental in dismantling England's batting. KTR posted on his X handle, 'What a magnificent performance by Team India in getting a historic victory at #EdgebastonTest. Fabulous all-round effort led by the supremely talented #ShubmanGill, who scored 430 runs !!! Unbelievable stuff. Take a bow, skipper. He also lauded Akash Deep for his 10-wicket haul and Mohammed Siraj for his support from the other end. And what a find #AkashDeep has been; a 10 wicket haul and ably assisted by the ever exuberant #Siraj. Coming to the match, England once again opted to field first.
