Apple's 'F1: The Movie' roars to top of US, Canada box office

Apple's high-octane racing film "F1: The Movie" roared to the top of the US and Canadian box office this weekend, fuelled by star-power and a finely-tuned marketing campaign, according to Comscore.
The movie, which stars Brad Pitt as a Formula 1 racer who returns to the track after an accident nearly ends his career, brought in $55.6 million in ticket sales in the two countries. That tally edged past the $45 million to $55 million pre-weekend domestic forecast from the Boxoffice Company.
Worldwide receipts topped $88 million, propelled by the sport's strong fan base in Europe and Latin America.
Racing films typically sputter in theatres, according to Daniel Loria, senior vice president of the Boxoffice Company, a theatrical ecommerce and data services firm. The most successful of the genre, the widely acclaimed Ford v Ferrari, opened to a modest $31 million in November 2019.
"We haven't had that many movies about car racing that have broken through," Loria said.
One notable outlier is the Fast & Furious action series that expanded beyond its street racing roots to include heists, espionage and an improbable moon shot.
F1 had several factors weighing in its favor, helping to broaden its appeal beyond racing enthusiasts.
The film's director, Joseph Kosinski, brought the same high-intensity cinematic treatment of Formula 1 racing that he lent to the fighter jet sequences in his 2022 movie, Top Gun: Maverick. Moviegoers who were polled by CinemaScore gave F1 an A rating, signalling their approval.
Netflix's Formula 1: Drive to Survive series helped fuel the popularity of Formula 1 racing, particularly in the US.
Apple also put marketing muscle behind its movie, an Apple Original Films production that Variety reported cost in excess of $200 million to make.
The tech giant touted F1 during CEO Tim Cook's keynote address at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference, and offered a movie discount to iPhone users. Apple Music also amplified the film's soundtrack.
Warner Bros, which marketed and distributed the movie, developed a bespoke campaign that emphasized the participation of Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton in Europe and Latin America, while focusing on Pitt in the US.
"It's very much like a perfectly coordinated pit crew in a race," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with Comscore, an information and analytics company. "They shot this thing off the starting line with great success."
F1 represents the biggest opening weekend for Apple, whose previous cinematic efforts, such as director Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, garnered critical acclaim but achieved modest results at the box office.

F1 CEO: Plan in place but 'not even thinking' about Middle East race changes

Formula One has a contingency plan to keep the show on the road should the season-ending races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi be affected by conflict in the Middle East, says chief executive Stefano Domenicali. The Italian, who is meeting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street along with several drivers and team principals on Wednesday as part of an event to mark the 75th anniversary of F1, emphasised there was no current concern those races might not be held. Qatar is due to host the penultimate round of the championship on November 30, with Abu Dhabi following on December 7. Yas Marina Circuit has been a title decider in the past. Iran responded to US participation in Israel's 12-day air war against Iran last month by firing missiles at an American airbase in Qatar, just across the Gulf from Iran. Airline services in the Middle East were heavily disrupted, with some countries closing airspace for a period. Domenicali said Formula One was in daily contact with promoters in the Middle East, who he said remained relaxed, and was closely monitoring the situation. 'To say something on that is very, very difficult,' he said on Tuesday when asked if he felt there was a real risk of the races not happening. 'So far, we don't have this kind of signal and so we are really hoping not. So I don't want to even think about it, mainly for the bigger picture and not for the racing itself … and of course, in case of, we have a plan. 'But let's hope this will not be even thinkable.' Qatar and Abu Dhabi are the last two races in a triple-header on successive weekends that starts with Las Vegas on November 22, with the cars then moving straight to the Middle East. While weather conditions in December would make it tricky to host replacement races at some European tracks, there are warmer options such as Portugal's Algarve circuit, which was used during the Covid-19 pandemic. 'Europe is big, the temperatures are quite mild in certain areas,' said Domenicali, who agreed one circuit might host both races. 'Definitely, we cannot go in places where there will be snow. But as I said, I am not even thinking about that. 'We are not worried at all that this will have an effect on the championship.' Formula One raced in Saudi Arabia in 2022 despite attacks launched by Yemen's Houthis on an oil facility near the Jeddah street circuit. Domenicali said Formula One was there then because it was sure of the guarantees of safety but recognised situations could change fast. 'We just need to be always ready and monitor the situation,' he said.

Norris showed his character after Canada, says Stella

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella praised Lando Norris's character as the Briton bounced back from a collision and race retirement in Canada to lead home a McLaren one-two at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Italian said Norris still needed 'to polish a few things' to become the finished article, however, in a Formula One season that is turning into a two-horse drivers' title chase with team mate Oscar Piastri. Norris had to fend off the Australian to set up Sunday's victory two weeks after his clash with his team mate forced him out in Montreal. 'The outcome (in Canada) was unfortunate because Lando could not finish the race. That was simply a misjudgement. The way Lando handled that, I think showed the character,' said Stella. 'The speed is there -- Lando pole position in Monaco... he was the faster car in Canada, pole position in Austria. 'We just have to polish a few things in executions and results which is what Lando demonstrated today. So, very proud of Lando, very proud of how everyone handled the situation in Canada and the fact we end up united and stronger.' The runaway constructors' championship leaders avoided another on-track accident, with Piastri delivering a mea culpa over team radio after the chequered flag following a near collision. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella watches on during the race. Reuters 'There was only one situation where the two cars ended up a little too close and that was in turn four when Oscar locked up and he ended up very close to Lando,' said Stella. 'We gave Oscar this feedback and I want to acknowledge that I am proud of Oscar. As soon as he crossed the finish line he went on the radio and he said sorry for the situation in turn four. 'I am so refreshed by how the team reviewed the situation in Canada. We have come out stronger and even more united.' Norris's win cut the gap to Piastri at the top of the drivers' standings to 15 points ahead of a home British race next weekend. Norris, seven times a race winner, has yet to take back-to-back wins in the same F1 season but Stella expects him to rectify that. 'In terms of Lando being able to do so, yes, of course,' he said. 'There is absolutely no reason why not -- the talent, the quality, the race craft and even the trajectory Lando is in. 'The most important thing is the back-to-back victory is for McLaren.' Meanwhile, Red Bull boss Christian Horner said the 2025 Formula One season was turning into a two-horse race between the McLaren drivers after his team had a home Austrian Grand Prix to forget on Sunday. Defending champion Verstappen retired on the first lap after being driven into by Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, while team mate Yuki Tsunoda finished last. 'The buffer they have is significant. It looks very much like a two-horse race. They (McLaren) have got a cushion to the rest of the field,' said Horner. 'For us, we focus one race at a time. We don't even think about championships. We just focus on the next race at Silverstone, what can we achieve there; same with Spa, same with Budapest. 'You try to grab every opportunity like we did in Imola (where Verstappen won).' Agencies

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2026 dates have just been announced

Yas Marina will once again bring the curtain down on the Formula 1 season – but before the bubbly sprays start in Abu Dhabi, the 2026 schedule has been officially locked in. Formula 1 and the FIA have confirmed the official dates for pre-season testing ahead of the 2026 championship. Before the action arrives at Yas Marina, testing will get underway in Spain and Bahrain. First up is a private test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya from January 26 to 30, followed by two official sessions in Bahrain – February 11 to 13 and February 18 to 20. Bahrain will get an early taste of the season, but make no mistake – all roads still lead to Abu Dhabi for the grand finale. Next year, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is scheduled for December 4 to 6 – the final race of the 2026 season and, as always, one of the most glamorous and high-profile events in the F1 calendar. Expect the biggest names in motorsport, major musical acts and an electric atmosphere that transforms Yas Island into the centre of the racing world. Elsewhere on the calendar, there's been one notable date change: the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, originally set for Sunday September 27, will now be held on Saturday September 26. The switch comes at the request of local organisers to accommodate a national day, with the entire race weekend moving forward by one day. The full 2026 F1 season kicks off in Australia from March 6 to 8. From there, it spans five continents before making its final stop – where else? – right here in Abu Dhabi.
