Dior reinvents Lewis Carroll's Alice for the Brat era at Paris fashion week
A snowy white cross-backed lace pinafore dress was worn with a quivering black silk mohican headdress. Alice's striped stockings were reimagined as lace-up leather gladiator boots. Her frothy skirt became a birdcage crinoline, her girlish ribbons were knotted dog collar-tight at the throat. In the front row, Pamela Anderson smiled beneath a dotted black veil, and Venus Williams was resplendent in tightly coiled braids. A fantastical landscape featuring lions in feather headdresses and plants that sprouted eyes as well as blooms was embroidered all over the walls a stage set in the garden of the Musée Rodin.
Escapism is a diplomatic answer to the tight spot in which many fashion designers now find themselves. Dior, where the designer Maria Grazia Chiuri has spelt out her worldview with feminist slogan T-shirts and advocated for diversity via a long-term collaboration with a Mumbai school for female craftworkers, has been at the forefront of a decade in which progressive principles became the mainstream in fashion.
With Trump's second term shifting the tectonic plates of culture, fashion is feeling the pressure to fall into line. Asked backstage before the show whether politics had influenced this collection, Chiuri said it had not, but added that 'fashion is a playground for the imagination. And in your imagination, you can create for yourself the world that you want to live in'.
Dior is in the headlights of the vibe shift. It is emerging as the most high status wardrobe in the court of Trump, with skirt suits in the distinctively hourglass silhouette of Dior's famous New Look worn by Melania Trump on election night, and by Ivanka Trump at the inauguration ceremony, which was attended by Dior's CEO, Delphine Arnault, and her billionaire father Bernard.
Here, Chiuri swapped the signature New Look for a lesser-known chapter of Dior history, when her job was held by a young Yves Saint Laurent, who presented a new trapeze silhouette consisting of babydoll dresses with a graphic A-line shape that all but ignored the waist. She fused this reference to late 1950s Dior with details borrowed from the gothically charged Alice in Wonderland depicted in Dorothea Tanning's surrealist paintings. Her gravity-defying hair and the jellyfish-tangle of her skirts showed up on the runway. Chiuri said backstage that she liked 'the idea of nonsense'.

Dior has boomed under Chiuri, its designer since 2016. HSBC recently estimated that revenues more than tripled from €2.7bn (£2.3bn) in 2018 to €9bn in 2023. Because it enjoys a substantial slice of the US luxury market, Dior has benefitted from the recent strength of the dollar. With a new designer creating excitement around its great rival Chanel, however, there have been persistent rumours of a change at Dior. With this collection - spirited, elegant and defiantly disorientating - the usually straight-talking Chiuri gave no clear answers.

BBC's Clare Balding says ‘I can't be the guilty one' after making sacrifice with wife Alice
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Clare Balding said 'I can't be the guilty one' as she opened up about a heartbreaking decision with her wife Alice Arnold. The Wimbledon presenter met Alice back in 1999 when they both worked on the BBC. The pair formalised their relationship with a civil partnership in 2006, before marrying in a private ceremony a decade later. In 2020 the loved-up couple faced heartbreak when their beloved Tibetan terrier Archie died. Clare says not having a dog around the house has been 'killing' her. Although when attending the Good Woof festival last year, Clare acknowledged it wasn't the right time to welcome a new four-legged friend into their house. That is because the couple were embarking on a major project in a bid to move home. Clare was also facing a summer away from home presenting the Olympic Games in Paris. The 54-year-old said: 'Here's the thing about responsible dog ownership, I'm going to be away all this summer doing the Olympics and Paralympics, this is not the time to bring a dog into my life, our life. 'We're doing a big housebuilding project so that we can move somewhere where we have a bit more space, we're not close to a road, we can have doors open all the time, so as and when we get a dog again, having had Archie for 15-and-a-half-years, so when we do it again we can do it right. And it's killing me not to have a dog right now, but I know it's the right thing to wait.' Clare however admitted some of the pooches at the Good Woof festival had caught her eye. She said: 'I have seen a lot of dogs today though that I would quite happily scoop up and take away while the owners are not watching, which as the presenter of a programme called Lost Dog, Found Dog, I don't think I should do. I can't be the one guilty of the crime.' During a segment on her show, Lost Dog, Found Dog, Clare spoke to a pet bereavement specialist who offered guidance on when to adopt a new dog after a loss. The specialist explained that owners will often know when it's the right time. They said: 'It's different for everyone, but the most important thing is, it's what's best for the animal you do get.' (Image: BBC) Clare stressed that people should consider the 'uniqueness' of each dog when considering welcoming another pooch into your property. She recommends avoiding the same breed or a dog with a similar name. She explained: 'And what we often hear is that people try and replace [the dog] with the same breed, the same name, please don't because every dog is unique and has its own character." Previously, when appearing on Good Morning Britain , Clare revealed she and Alice were edging closer to becoming dog owners once more. She however stressed they were taking their time with the decision. Clare will be leading the BBC's coverage of Wimbledon day 13 from 4pm today (July 12). This afternoon will see the ladies' singles finals.

The 45-year-old singer — who posed provocatively with a cherry days ago — unveiled a darker hair color in pictures shared on Instagram on Friday. Simpson, known throughout her career for her golden locks, has traded in the shade for a 'bronze' hue that combines brunette and blonde. As the songstress marked the milestone with her mom Tina Simpson and a group of girlfriends, she looked stunning in flowing tresses that fell over her chest. Her hair was parted down the middle and set in sultry waves as she enjoyed herself at LA's stories Chateau Marmont. Jessica captioned the post shared with her six million followers: 'Fancy dive into 45.' Although her younger sister Ashlee Simpson didn't appear in any of the outtakes, she she showed love in the comments, writing, '45 [never] looked better angel queen. Love you so much! This is your year.' For the bash, the former MTV reality personality stunned in a cleavage-baring, see-through mesh and stone dress. She added a coordinating sparkly choker and stepped out in platform heels. Some images showed the fashion designer in a satin, black, blazer-inspired trench coat. One day earlier the With You hitmaker teased the music video for her new song Fade, in which she lingered in a bathroom donning black lingerie and a cheetah print coat. She pouted her way through the snippet as she incorporated red lipstick, using it to scribble on blue tile in a bathtub. Simpson, who announced her separation from Eric Johnson earlier this year, wrote in the caption, 'To start off my 45th year'round the sun, Imma gonna bright side the journey of life by choosin' to be the HAPPY part of my BIRTHDAY.' She added, 'I've been patiently waitin' for y'all to get a dose of #FADE from the upcomin' journey through #NashvilleCanyon, Part 2. Pre-save using the link in bio.' The singer's latest project, an EP released on March 21, is the result of her split from husband Eric. At the time of her divorce announcement, she said in a statement, 'Eric and I have been living separately, navigating a painful situation in our marriage.' Breakup rumors first swirled in November 2024 when she began teasing her new songs, writing on the internet, 'Interviews in my Nashville music room where I unearthed my singular magic. 'This comeback is personal. It's an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve.' The estranged spouses share daughter Maxwell, 13, son Ace, 12, and daughter Birdie, six.
