World's largest container ship MSC IRINA makes historic debut at Vizhinjam International Seaport
According to an Adani group press release, this monumental arrival marks a significant milestone for the seaport, which was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2.
The MSC IRINA boasts an impressive capacity of 24,346 TEUs, making it a formidable player in global shipping. With a length of 399.9 metres and a width of 61.3 metres, the vessel is approximately four times longer than a standard FIFA-designated football field.
Designed specifically to facilitate the transportation of large volumes of containers between Asia and Europe, the MSC IRINA is pivotal in enhancing trade routes and logistics efficiency.
This vessel makes its maiden visit to a South Asian port, highlighting Vizhinjam's capabilities in handling Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). The port has recently welcomed other Icon-class vessels, including MSC Turkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini, further establishing its reputation as a key hub in maritime trade.
The MSC IRINA was launched in March 2023 and embarked on its maiden voyage in April of the same year. It is engineered to stack containers up to 26 tiers high, offering unparalleled capacity in container stacking.
Notably, the MSC IRINA surpasses its predecessor, OOCL Spain, by a margin of 150 TEUs. In alignment with contemporary environmental standards, the vessel is equipped with energy-saving features that contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions by up to 4 per cent, significantly lowering its carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency.
The docking of the MSC IRINA at Vizhinjam International Seaport not only underscores the port's strategic importance in global shipping but also represents a leap forward in sustainable maritime practices, setting a benchmark for future developments in the industry. (ANI)

PM Modi announces OCI cards for 6th generation of Indian origin citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, says
Port of Spain [Trinidad and Tobago], July 4 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (Local Time) announced that citizens of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago, up to the sixth generation, will now be eligible for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards, allowing them to live and work in India without restrictions. Addressing the Indian community in Port of Spain during his first visit to the Caribbean country as Prime Minister, PM Modi underlined the deep emotional and cultural ties that bind India with its diaspora. 'Today, I'm happy to announce that the OCI cards will be given to the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago. We aren't just connected by blood or surname. You are connected by belonging. India welcomes, and India embraces you!' PM Modi said. He encouraged the Indian-origin community to visit their ancestral land and deepen their connection with India. 'I encourage all of you to visit India more in person, and not just virtually via social media. Visit the villages of your ancestors. Walk the soil they walked on. Bring your children and neighbours. Bring anyone who enjoys 'Chai' and a good story. We will welcome all of you with open arms, warm hearts and Jalebi,' he said. PM Modi also congratulated Trinidad and Tobago for becoming the first country in the region to adopt India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system. 'I congratulate Trinidad and Tobago for being the first country in the region to adopt UPI. Now, sending money will be as easy as sending a Good Morning text message. I promise it will be faster than the bowling of the West Indies,' he said. Highlighting India's rapid growth, PM Modi said the country has emerged as the fastest-growing major economy and has successfully lifted millions out of poverty. 'India is the fastest-growing major economy in the world. Soon, we will be among the top three economies of the world. The fruits of India's growth and progress are reaching the most needy. India has proved that we can defeat poverty by empowering the poor... The World Bank has noted that India has lifted over 250 million people above extreme poverty in the last decade. India's growth is being powered by our innovative and energetic youth,' he said. The Prime Minister also spoke about India's recent strides in space exploration, including the Chandrayaan-3 Moon mission, the Axiom-4 mission, and the upcoming Gaganyaan mission. 'I am sure everyone amongst you feels proud when India grows. For the New India, even the sky is not the limit. All of you must have cheered when India's Chandrayaan-3 landed on the Moon. We named the place where it landed as 'Shiv Shakti point'. An Indian astronaut is onboard the International Space Station as we speak. We are now working on a manned space mission, 'Gaganyaan'. Soon, an Indian will walk on the moon, and India will have its own space station... We don't just count the stars, we try to reach them by mission like the 'Aaditya' mission... The moon is not far from us... India's achievements in space are not just ours, we are sharing its fruits with the rest of the world,' PM Modi said. This is PM Modi's first bilateral visit to Trinidad and Tobago as Prime Minister and the first such visit by an Indian Prime Minister since 1999. Madhya Pradesh rolls out INR 239 crore laptop aid for over 94,000 high-scoring Class 12 students
BHOPAL: In a major push to promote digital learning and reward academic excellence, the Madhya Pradesh government will distribute laptops to 94,234 meritorious students under the "Pratibhashali Vidyarthi Protsahan Yojana" on Friday, July 4. The initiative, aimed at empowering students who have scored 75 per cent or more in the Class 12 board examinations conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE), involves a financial outlay of Rs 238.98 crore. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will preside over the state-level distribution ceremony in Bhopal. He wrote on his X handle: "I'm delighted that on 4th July, we will extend financial incentives of Rs 25,000 each to 94,234 students who have scored 75 percent or above in the Class 12 MP Board examinations." He further said "this reflects our commitment to nurturing a generation of empowered youth who will contribute to realizing the vision of a developed India under the leadership of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi". Under the scheme, each eligible student will receive Rs 25,000 directly to their bank account to purchase a laptop of their choice. The "Pratibhashali Vidyarthi Protsahan Yojana" which has been operational since 2009-10, has so far benefited over 4.3 lakh students, with more than Rs 1,080 crore disbursed in total. Last year alone, 89,710 students received financial assistance under the scheme. The 2025 edition marks a significant scale-up, both in terms of beneficiaries and budget. According to official sources, the scheme covers both regular and self-taught students from government and recognised non-government schools. The eligibility threshold for general category students is 75 per cent, while students from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes qualify with 65 per cent marks. The initiative aligns with the state's vision of building a digitally empowered generation and complements national efforts under the Digital India campaign .
