Police update after 'suspicious package' in Nottingham Canal caused evacuation

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Multiple buildings in Nottingham's city centre were forced to evacuate as police began to investigate what was described as a 'suspicious package' pulled out of the canal
A man who unknowingly fished a "suspicious package" out of Nottingham Canal has recalled the moment it dawned on him the item could be "dangerous."

Multiple buildings in Nottingham's city centre were forced to evacuate on Friday afternoon, with a cordon swiftly placed near the main railway station as police began to investigate what was described as a "suspicious package". Officers were joined by fire crews at the scene at around 3.30pm on Friday, July 25.

The package is yet to be identified, but unconfirmed reports suggest the evacuation was sparked by a suspected explosive found by a magnet fisher in the canal, Nottinghamshire Live reports.

A bomb disposal team descended on Station Street at roughly 4.30pm and left soon after 6pm before the cordons were lifted. A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Police confirmed the incident "was safely resolved," while Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are no longer in attendance in the city centre. Road closures have been lifted. We would like to thank the public for their patience whilst the incident was safely dealt with."

Connor Parker, 29, from Colwick, said he unknowingly pulled the package out of the canal near the Carrington Street bridge and quickly realised it could be dangerous. He told Nottinghamshire Live: "I was magnet fishing, because I'd seen it on YouTube and gone down the canal a few times, but mostly just found nails. This time I found a bike, and another bike, so I moved down to try find things that had dropped into the canal.
"Then I found what I just thought was a big piece of metal, but as I pulled it out a bloke on a bike came past and said 'that looks dangerous' and that I needed to report it. As we moved towards the Station Street bridge I heard him reporting it to the police and they arrived straight away and I flagged them down. Then everything went mental."
"It blew up," he added, before clarifying: "I shouldn't say blew up, it went all over social media I mean."
Nottinghamshire Police said in an earlier statement that officers were managing the "ongoing incident with partner agencies." The police spokesperson added: "Surrounding buildings are in the process of being evacuated, while roads in the near vicinity have been blocked off.
"The incident is expected to cause some traffic issues, with the rail and tram network likely to be affected for some time. We'd like to thank the public in advance for their patience."

TikToker hits 3m views praising National's Trump front page

TikTok user Hal_for_NY said Friday's splash, timed to coincide with the president's arrival in Scotland for the opening of a new golf course and meetings with Keir Starmer and European Commission president Ursula von der Layen, was 'amazing'. The clip has been viewed 3.1 million times and racked up more than 549,000 comments since it was posted on Friday. In the clip, the social media user said: 'Donald Trump is being welcomed to Scotland as a felon and not as a president as his trip is already off to a bad start. "Now, if you didn't know, today Donald Trump is headed to Scotland where he's expected to visit both of his golf courses and celebrate the grand opening of a new golf course, but in preparation for his arrival, Scottish newspaper The National released their front page and it is amazing. Take a look at this: 'Convicted US felon to arrive in Scotland'. 'Yeah, not president of the United States. Heck, they even call him 'Republican leader' instead of president. That is how he's going to be welcomed. On top of that, there are protests at both of his golf courses for his arrival.' The social media user goes on to speculate that Trump would have hoped the trip could have provided a 'distraction' to his domestic woes, as his Maga fanbase turn sour on the president over his refusal to release the so-called Epstein files. The results of historic investigations into paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, a former friend of Trump, are potentially explosive and reportedly name him but much of the material remains classified. (Image: Anna Moneymaker, Getty Images) Trump had said during his election campaign he would be open to releasing more – but has since walked this back, saying the case is closed. He also appeared to have been angered by a recent South Park episode which depicted him as literally getting into bed with Satan and having a tiny penis. The social media user added: 'Donald Trump thought he could get away and have a bit of a distraction. He's got so much going on here between the [Epstein] files that he's not releasing, the South Park episode. (Image: Greg Lovett/Palm Beach Post/USA TODAY Network via Imagn Images) 'He's not having exactly the time he wants here, so he thought maybe in Scotland he can get away from this and get a distraction. Instead, he's getting the welcome that he so richly deserves. Well done.' It also featured in a video from the popular MeidasTouch YouTube channel which has received 1.6m views. The front page has spread like wildfire in Scotland, the UK and US, with anti-Trump Americans expressing their joy on social media at seeing the president exposed in the media.

YouTuber made creepy baby cot film before killing wife as she pushed son in pram

Habibur Masum posted videos of himself packing a hospital bag and putting together a new cot as he prepared for his first child with wife Kulsuma Akter, who he later stabbed to death A wannabe YouTuber who stabbed his wife to death while she pushed their baby son in a pram, made a bizarre video about his son's cot just months earlier. ‌ Habibur Masum attacked Kulsuma Akter after tracking her down after she fled his 'violence, jealousy and controlling behaviour'. ‌ The 27-year-old mum had left to go out with a friend on April 6 last year, believing Masum was in Spain, but he confronted her in the street as she was pushing their seven-month-old. ‌ Prosecutors said Masum, 26, launched a 'ferocious' knife attack leaving her with multiple stab injuries, including one which severed her jugular vein. One eyewitness described hearing Ms Akter 'screaming in agony and pain'. His trial heard Ms Akter had left him in January 2024 after telling police that Masum had assaulted her. ‌ She told police he had held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her over a 'completely innocuous' message she received from a male colleague at a factory. In a statement, which was read in court, Ms Akter said: 'I was very frightened when he was holding the knife as I believed what he was telling me and that he might kill me… I do not want to stay with him anymore.' ‌ She told officers her relationship with her husband of 18 months was 'usually good' but that 'recently he has been controlling me… taking my phone off me and not letting me contact anyone'. Masum, who fancied himself as a content creator, had a YouTube account where he would post videos about his life. In the run up to his son's birth he posted a video of himself building the baby's cot. In it he speeds up the unboxing of the furniture and can be heard giving a voice over commentary telling his 102 subscribers what he is doing. He can be seen skipping through the written instructions before giving a hands-on demo of how to put it together. ‌ This video was uploaded in October 2023 before he killed in April 2024. Following the attack, the video was swamped with comments pointing out what he had done. "And then you killed his mother," one person wrote. Another said: "Aww you made your baby a bed and then made sure he had no mother." ‌ Masum also uploade a YouTube short showing him packing a hospital bag in preparation for the birth of the couple's first baby. It included a towel, blanket, tiny baby clothes and nappies. Masum was sentenced to life behind bars with a judge telling him he will spend a minimum of 28 years in jail. ‌ In a statement following the sentencing Ms Akter remembered the young woman as a "much-loved daughter, sister, aunt and mother". They said: "Kulsuma's loss has left a gaping hole in the lives of all her family and friends. We have been left with a profound sense of emptiness and a deep and painful void in our lives. "She was a loving, caring and kind soul with a generous nature and touched the lives of everyone she came into contact with. ‌ "As a family we miss her beautiful smile which would light up any room she entered. We will miss her humour, her kindness and her love. We will never forgive the monster who took Kulsuma from us and we do not wish to utter his name. It does not deserve to be mentioned. "The monster who savagely took Kulsuma from not only us, but also from her baby son. He will never know her beauty and her kindness. "He will never know his mother, other than the memories we as a family will share with him as he grows. He is the only light in all this darkness and Kulsuma radiates throughout him. 'Although we are grateful for the judicial process that found him guilty of this crime and for the sentence he has received today, no amount of time in prison will change the life sentence he has inflicted upon us all. "No family should have to endure the pain and heartache we have had to endure since he took Kulsuma's life so horrifically. We can only try and keep her memory alive by continuing to love her and to remember her name."
