During the protests people of the state attacked the residences of the Chief Minister, Speaker, ministers, MLAs and political parties and burnt most of them. The Central government finally decided to call off the decision .

The speakers said during the 2001 Uprising security personnel resorted to firing resulting in the death of 18 persons including a woman. All the 18 martyrs were cremated at Kekrupat where a memorial complex has been constructed.
The speakers vowed to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur. Representatives of most communities settled in Manipur came to offer tributes.

France to recognize Palestinian state: Macron

Paris, July 25 (UNI) French President Emmanuel Macron has said France will recognize a Palestinian state in an announcement to the United Nations General Assembly in September. 'True to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the state of Palestine,' Macron posted to X yesterday. 'The urgent need today is to end the war in Gaza and to rescue the civilian population,' he continued, reiterating calls for an immediate ceasefire, access to humanitarian aid for the population of Gaza, the release of all hostages and the demilitarization of Hamas, reports CNN. 'We must build the state of Palestine, ensure its viability, and ensure that by accepting its demilitarization and fully recognizing Israel, it contributes to the security of all in the Middle East. There is no alternative,' Macron added. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said the consul in Jerusalem delivered a letter from Macron to the Palestinian Authority stating France's intention. Palestinian Authority (PA) Vice President Hussein Al Sheikh posted to X thanking Macron for his letter to PA President Mahmoud Abbas. Soon after, Hamas has welcomed President Macron's announcement that France will recognize a Palestinian state. Hamas called it 'a positive step in the right direction toward achieving justice for our oppressed Palestinian people and supporting their legitimate right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on all of their occupied territories.' However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned French President Macron's decision to recognize Palestinian statehood. 'Such a move rewards terror and risks creating another Iranian proxy, just as Gaza became,' the PM said in a statement. 'A Palestinian state in these conditions would be a launch pad to annihilate Israel — not to live in peace beside it. Let's be clear: the Palestinians do not seek a state alongside Israel; they seek a state instead of Israel,' he added. UNI XC SS

Today in Politics: As PM Modi reaches a milestone, BJP faces 3 key challenges

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to overtake Indira Gandhi and become the PM with the second-longest unbroken stint in the highest elected office in the country. Modi, who is in the United Kingdom on a crucial bilateral visit, completes 4,078 days in office, one more than Indira, who was the PM uninterrupted from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977 While the PM reaches this milestone, his party faces some challenges on the domestic political front. First up is Bihar, where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has added momentum to the Opposition's attempts to corner the NDA government. While the ruling alliance is united in public, concerns have been expressed internally about how the voter verification drive will unfold, given that voters have been confused and have expressed anxiety about the entire exercise, as The Indian Express reported in a recent series from the state. Now, JD(U) MP Giridhari Yadav has become the first NDA parliamentarian to publicly criticise the SIR. While Yadav may not be a political heavyweight, the BJP will hope that cracks do not appear in the Bihar alliance. Opposition RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav has said the party may consider a poll boycott over the SIR, and the Congress Bihar in-charge, Krishna Allavaru, has said 'all avenues are open'. In the context of the Congress and its senior leadership repeatedly raising questions on the integrity of recent electoral processes, whether this turns into a serious option for the Mahagathbandhan will be one of the political stories to watch out for on Friday and the days to come. In all likelihood, this will end up playing into the hands of the BJP and give it breathing space to manoeuvre and counterattack the Opposition when it must be feeling the heat in Bihar. The second challenge for the BJP is managing the optics following the surprising resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice-President earlier this week. Though the jury is out on why Dhankar stepped down so suddenly, Neerja Chowdhury writes in her latest column that the BJP won't be happy with the fact that it has to admit that it could not manage someone it had chosen for the second-highest Constitutional post. Third, the BJP faces a tough test in less than a year in West Bengal, one of the states where the SIR is expected to cause a political upheaval if held. Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee has already declared she won't allow the exercise in the state, saying it will lead to the exclusion of genuine voters. The TMC chief has also instructed her party to start mobilising on the issue of detention of Bangla-speaking migrants in various BJP-ruled states. At her Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata on July 21, Banerjee targeted the BJP as an anti-Bengali party allegedly hounding Bangla speakers and labelling them as Bangladeshis. She alleged the BJP had unleashed 'linguistic terrorism' on Bangla speakers and announced that starting July 27, the party would hold protests each weekend to protest this injustice. She reiterated her message on Thursday. The narrative built around Bengali pride and painting it as a party of outsiders had proved costly for the BJP in the 2021 elections and could hurt its chances in next year's elections too. How the party responds to this while maintaining its appeal to its core voter base about being tough on undocumented immigration will be one of the things to watch out for. Centre to seek six-month extension of President's Rule in Manipur; Amit Shah to table resolution in RS today

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to move a resolution in the Rajya Sabha on Friday to extend President's Rule in Manipur for an additional six months starting August 13, 2025, according to media reports. The move comes at a time when political pressure is mounting from within the NDA's own ranks to restore democratic governance in the conflict-hit state. His departure was largely driven by political turmoil within the ruling BJP, as several Meitei legislators revolted against his leadership. In the absence of any contender staking a claim to form the government, the Centre invoked Article 356. Despite the state assembly remaining in suspended animation—its tenure lasting until 2027—no attempt has since been made to reconstitute an elected government. Live Events Pushback from NDA's Own MLAs Since April, Meitei and Naga legislators of the BJP-led NDA, including both supporters and critics of Biren Singh, have been lobbying for the return of a 'popular government.' They argue that President's Rule has failed to restore normalcy or address the deeper political and ethnic grievances in the state. The move to extend Central rule is expected to further strain saffron party ties between the Centre and its alliance MLAs in Manipur. Meanwhile, Manipur continues to grapple with the aftermath of the violent ethnic conflict that erupted on May 3, 2023, between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities . Over 250 people have been killed, and more than 60,000 displaced. Though violence has subsided in recent months—particularly in the foothill areas that once saw some of the fiercest clashes—key issues remain unresolved. Security Operations ongoing On Thursday, security forces arrested eight militants from multiple proscribed outfits in operations across Imphal West, Bishnupur, Tengnoupal, and Chandel districts. Officials said that area domination exercises and coordinated search operations have been ongoing since the violence first broke out in 2023. Observers note that tensions had been brewing long before the conflict erupted. In 2022 and 2023, then-Chief Minister Biren Singh had launched large-scale eviction drives to clear alleged encroachments on reserve forest lands across both hill and valley districts. These actions sparked sharp resistance, particularly among Kuki and Zo groups, and are now widely viewed as one of the catalysts of the wider conflict.
