A travel content creator's Easter Sunday in Bali took a terrifying turn after she was nearly swept away by a massive wave at the scenic Angel's Billabong, a popular tourist site on Nusa Penida island.
In a now-viral video, creator Katy Johnson shared the harrowing moment, capturing the exact moment when a rogue wave crashed into her as she was recording a selfie on the rocks. The overlay on the video read: 'The day in Bali I almost died."
'Easter Sunday in Bali really said, 'You wanna meet Jesus today?' Because I almost did," Johnson wrote in her caption. 'One rogue wave came crashing in at Angel's Billabong like it had a personal beef with me and nearly swept me right off the viewing platform and into the next life. Not the kind of baptism I signed up for."
What began as a serene travel moment quickly descended into chaos as the wave aggressively surged over the rocks, drenching Johnson and knocking her camera into the water. The video ends abruptly in a blur of motion and panic.
Johnson reflected on the seriousness of the incident after initially laughing it off. 'Learning that over a dozen tourists have actually died at this spot? That hit hard. There were no warning signs, no security, and honestly, no reason to think the waves would even reach the deck."
She used the experience to urge fellow travellers to prioritise safety over content. 'Your life is worth more than content. Responsible tourism means staying curious and cautious. Research your locations, be aware of your surroundings, and don't ignore your gut," she added.
Angel's Billabong, while famed for its crystal-clear tide pools and stunning views, has repeatedly drawn criticism for its lack of safety infrastructure, with multiple reported fatalities in recent years.
Johnson's video has reignited debate around the need for better safety measures at such high-risk tourist spots.

Delhi breathes cleanest July air in 7 years: CAQM

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) Delhi recorded its cleanest July air in seven years with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) falling to 78, in the 'satisfactory' category, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said on Thursday. The AQI this July was even better than 2020, when pollution levels had dropped significantly due to restrictions on movement and industrial activity during to the COVID-19 lockdown. According to the CAQM, the average AQI for July in previous years stood at 104 in 2018, 134 in 2019, 84 in 2020, 110 in 2021, 87 in 2022, 84 in 2023 and 96 in 2024. The month also saw the highest number of days with 'satisfactory' air quality, 29 this year compared to 16 in 2018, 12 in 2019, 25 in 2020, 20 in 2021, 25 in 2022, 26 in 2023 and 17 in 2024. For the January-July period, Delhi reported significant improvement in air quality with the average AQI dropping to 184 from 204 in 2024 and 183 in 2023. The AQI during the same period was 209 in 2022, 205 in 2021, 159 in 2020, 215 in 2019 and 217 in 2018. There was not a single day with an AQI above 400 this year. In contrast, such days were recorded multiple times in previous years. The city also witnessed its lowest levels of PM2.5 and PM10 between January and July this year. The PM2.5 concentration averaged 79 micrograms per cubic metre, the lowest since 2018 except for the lockdown year. It was 94 in 2024, 83 in 2023, 93 in 2022, 97 in 2021, 73 in 2020, 99 in 2019 and 103 in 2018. Similarly, PM10 levels averaged 180 micrograms per cubic metre, compared to 209 in 2024, 184 in 2023, 218 in 2022, 210 in 2021, 147 in 2020, 224 in 2019 and 234 in 2018. The CAQM said favourable meteorological conditions and coordinated efforts to control and abate air pollution contributed to the significant improvement. The commission added that measures would be intensified to sustain and further enhance air quality in the coming months. CIDCO mulls sustainable mobility plan for Navi Mumbai and NAINA

Thane, July 31 (PTI) Maharashtra town planning authority, CIDCO, on Thursday said a comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) will be formulated for the transit development of Navi Mumbai and the international airport influence notified area (NAINA). The plan for 2054 and beyond aims to promote a sustainable, inclusive, and efficient transportation policy for one of the country's fastest-growing urban corridors. 'With projects such as Navi Mumbai International Airport, Corporate Park, Aerocity, Edu City, Logistic Park, Medicity, along with residential and industrial growth, traffic volume in Navi Mumbai is set to rise substantially. 'In this backdrop, the Comprehensive Mobility Plan will serve as a guiding framework for CIDCO and other authorities to develop a versatile, inclusive, and future-ready transportation system," Vijay Singhal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of CIDCO, stated. The proposed CMP will adopt a holistic approach, integrating various forms of mobility like public transportation, private vehicles, and non-motorised options such as walking and cycling. Some of the key objectives of the CMP include ensuring safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable transport for all and creating an integrated transportation network across Navi Mumbai and NAINA. Currently, Navi Mumbai's infrastructure includes 980 km of roadways, major corridors such as the Thane-Belapur Road, Sion-Panvel Highway, and Palm Beach Road, a 60-km railway network, the Belapur-Pendhar Metro, and bus services. 'The CMP will play a crucial role in identifying gaps in the current transportation network, prioritising investments, and creating a phased roadmap aligned with local and regional mobility needs," CIDCO stated. The plan is expected to be finalised in phases following consultations with regional stakeholders, transport experts, and urban planners. ITBP-DBT forge partnership to address challenges faced by border guarding troops

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) The ITBP, responsible for guarding the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, has signed an agreement with the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to find scientific solutions for the health and environmental challenges faced by troops at high-altitude locations. As part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the experts from the two sides will work to tackle issues like high-altitude sickness, low oxygen (hypoxia) and extreme cold conditions, an official statement said. They will also find ways to bring diagnostic tools and telemedicine to remote border posts and do research work to improve diet, stress relief methods and genetic studies for better adaptation to harsh climates, an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) spokesperson said. The agreement was signed by the officials from the two sides in the presence of DBT Secretary Rajesh S Gokhale and ITBP Director General Rahul Rasgotra, he said. The DBT functions under the Ministry of Science and Technology. The MoU also aims to hold regular interactions between DBT scientists and ITBP medical teams to stay updated with the latest innovations, the spokesperson said. He said development of special nutrition packs, emergency medical kits and cold-weather health gear for the troops is also a subject of work as part of this partnership. The ITBP's nearly 90,000 personnel are primarily tasked with guarding the 3,488-km-long LAC, apart from rendering a variety of duties in the internal security domain of the country under the Union home ministry.
