HBCU baseball player turned umpire now in MLB
Dexter Kelley, a proud HBCU alum from Savannah State University, made his Major League Baseball debut this spring, becoming part of the umpiring crew for the 2025 season. Since his debut, Kelley has already called eight MLB games.
Kelley, 36, worked his first game at Truist Park in Atlanta during a Braves vs. Padres matchup, serving as the second base umpire. He later took assignments at first base and behind home plate throughout the series. His debut was even more special with his family-his wife, son, parents, and close friends-cheering from the stands.
Originally an outfielder at Savannah State, Kelley dreamed of playing professionally but moved on after not getting the contract he wanted. That's when his former college teammate, Joe McCrary, suggested umpiring. Initially hesitant, Kelley was intrigued by the side money: '$50 a game for two hours.'
What began as a side hustle soon became a career. Kelley enrolled in a six-week umpire school and later attended the prestigious Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School in Daytona Beach, graduating at the top of his class. He quickly advanced through the Gulf Coast League, New York-Penn League, Single-A Florida State League, Double-A Southern League, and Triple-A baseball.
This spring, Kelley was among 21 umpires selected to work MLB spring training games and was officially assigned a call-up number. When he finally received 'the call,' it was the good kind. Kelley made his first major league call at second base on a dramatic play by Ronald Acuña Jr., a moment he'll never forget.
Kelley knows this is just the beginning. 'It's a great job, very hard job and nothing is promised. You just have to keep working and hope the chips fall your way.'
His journey is a testament to the fact that HBCU athletes can still secure their livelihood in sports in more than just one way.

Answering your Padres questions: Pitching problems, the trade deadline and future free agents
Dennis Lin discussed the state of Pads pitching, the trade deadline and what's inside the mind of A.J. Preller during a wide-ranging live Q&A with The Athletic subscribers last Friday. What's the likelihood and the value of trading an expiring and currently underperforming asset like Luis Arraez? Would you do it? — John C.? It doesn't seem likely. Most other teams already don't value him as much as the Padres do. Here's another question, though: Should the Padres extend a qualifying offer to Arraez this offseason? Can they afford the risk that he would accept and occupy a decent chunk of payroll? I think they would, because I think he would turn down a qualifying offer. It hasn't been a great contract season for Arraez, but he remains a three-time batting champion who is supremely confident in his abilities. Whether he'd do better than roughly $22 million on the open market is yet another question. His free agency should be fascinating. Advertisement I'm not sure if it's quantifiable, but the lineup outside of Jackson Merrill, Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. just feels … boring. Do you think they'll look to add a bit of speed/power in left field? Jarren Duran is an obvious fit, and they've shown interest in Byron Buxton in the past. Any idea of what kind of player they'd target out there? — Will H. Here's one way to quantify things: You listed the Padres' three best hitters. If you take them out of an offense that entered Sunday ranked 23rd with a .694 OPS, well, yeah, you might not want to keep watching the Padres. Duran remains at or near the top of San Diego's list of trade targets, but unless the Red Sox really fall out of their wild-card chase, they may not have much incentive to move him next month. Buxton probably isn't going anywhere. In the meantime, here's another number you may have seen: Padres left fielders went into this week with a .618 OPS. That ranked 26th in the majors. They need a left fielder who's far closer to league average (.716 OPS). Even someone who's slightly under that mark could be a significant upgrade. And someone who can hit lefties would be preferable. An outfielder like Luis Robert Jr., Taylor Ward, Cedric Mullins, Adolis García or Austin Hays, who just came off the injured list, could make sense. I suspect A.J. Preller prefers a toolsier player. That's why I think guys like Robert and García are closer to the top of the list. I know it's impossible to predict Preller, but does the organization seem more likely to chase a low-cost rental or a controllable star in left field? — Raphael C. History says he'd love a star. The current market indicates there may not be many stars available. The Rafael Devers trade was a unique situation, and with 12 playoff spots available, most teams still feel like they have a chance of contending. Advertisement What do you think is the Padres' assessment of Gavin Sheets in left field? Would they keep him in left and go for a designated hitter like Marcell Ozuna? — Terrence D. Sheets has looked better out there since his face-first crash, but the Padres would much prefer to add a left fielder and move Sheets back to being a DH and occasional first baseman. They need him to stay healthy, and in addition to another bat or two, they could use a defensive upgrade over Sheets in left. With the depth of the farm system being hard-throwing, maybe slightly wild relief pitchers, do you suspect Preller might trade away some of the bullpen arms to cut/shave future payroll at the deadline? — Alan K. You can probably bank on a reliever or two being moved. As you alluded to, organizational bullpen depth is the Padres' strength. That said, their higher-leverage arms have been overworked, so I don't see them subtracting too much from the big-league roster. But yeah, it will be interesting to see what happens with the likes of Bradgley Rodriguez, Eduarniel Núñez and Tyson Neighbors. They could be relatively close to helping the Padres. They could also be relatively close to helping other teams. The Giants have elite pitching, including Logan Webb, who has logged more innings than any other National League West starting pitcher, which means fewer innings on their elite bullpen. Given that the Padres and Giants have similar records, how sustainable is it going forward if Michael King and Yu Darvish do not return soon? — Cm C. Not sustainable. Randy Vásquez, Stephen Kolek and Ryan Bergert have done a commendable job, but they're younger pitchers who could hit a wall at some point. Meanwhile, the Padres need deeper outings from their starters. The bullpen has done a ton of heavy lifting in close games. At some point, that won't be sustainable, either. Advertisement What are the chances the Padres retain some of the trio of arms (King, Dylan Cease and Robert Suarez) entering free agency this fall? — Patrick S. Cease is a Scott Boras client, and every team could use him. In other words, he's almost certainly gone. King's weird injury might have increased the chances of his staying, but for now, I'd still put those odds at well under 50 percent. Suarez will be 35 next season, and he's had elbow issues in the past. The Padres would be wise to let him explore free agency. Given Suarez's recent struggles and Adrian Morejon's emergence as a legitimate high-leverage option, has there been any internal discussion about potentially giving Morejon more late-inning save opportunities moving forward? — Alexis C. He already appears to be trending in this direction. Seven of his past 11 appearances have come in the eighth inning or later. The Padres aren't going to be over-reactionary after a few blips from Suarez, but Morejon has shown he's a ready alternative in the ninth.
