German spy agency suspends 'extremist' designation of far-right AfD party

Washington Post08-05-2025
BERLIN — Germany's domestic intelligence agency said Thursday it will await a court ruling before moving forward with plans to classify the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party as a ' right-wing extremist ' movement, a step that could subject the party to broader surveillance and scrutiny of its activities.
The announced pause comes after the party, known as AfD, filed a lawsuit in the western city of Cologne against the move by the intelligence service and the party's supporters alleged a politically motivated crackdown.

IDF soldiers operate in four locations across southern Syria, arrest weapons smugglers

IDF soldiers entered four locations simultaneously and located numerous weapons that the suspects had trafficked, based on prior intelligence surveillance and in-depth field investigations. IDF soldiers from the 226th Brigade, under the command of the 210th Division, cooperated alongside Unit 504 to arrest and question several suspects involved in weapons trafficking in the Hader area in southern Syria, the military said on Sunday. IDF soldiers entered four locations simultaneously and located numerous weapons that the suspects had trafficked, based on prior intelligence surveillance and in-depth field investigations. In recent months, the IDF's 210th Division has operated in southern Syria, primarily arresting suspects and removing threats to Israeli civilians living along the border with Syria in the Golan Heights. Additionally, in July, the IDF conducted extensive airstrikes on Syrian regime forces in and around the vicinity of Sweida in southern Syria on behalf of the Druze living in the area. As of July 16, the IDF had undertaken 160 aerial attacks on Syrian regime forces, The Jerusalem Post learned. In addition, the IDF has attacked, and possibly destroyed, Syria's Defense Ministry, and also attacked part of the Presidential Palace in Damascus. Dozens or more Syrian regime forces are said to have been killed in IDF attacks. IDF sources said that the military is ready for a multi-day campaign to convince Syrian regime forces to withdraw from Sweida and leave the Syrian Druze their autonomy. Yonah Jeremy Bob contributed to this report. This is a developing story.

Poland extends border controls with Germany and Lithuania until October

Poland is extending its temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania until October 4. This was announced by Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński on Sunday. The reason given was continued concerns regarding irregular migration. Increased security measures have made the route via Belarus and Russia largely impassable, which is why the migration movement is increasingly shifting to other EU states - especially Lithuania and Latvia. 'The 98% tightness of our barrier means that Belarusian and Russian services and illegal migration are moving to other sections,' says Kierwiński. 'Today, the main task not only for us but also for our partners in the European Union is to close the route to Lithuania and Latvia, if I may use that word,' he added. In response to illegal migration, Germany introduced controls at its borders with Poland and the Czech Republic. Last year, these controls were extended to all borders. 'In September, we will decide on the next steps in this regard based on data from the border guards, the military and the police,' Kierwiński said. In Lithuania, controls are being carried out at 13 locations, including three border crossings. The remaining 10 border crossing sites will be 'ad hoc control sites', which can be used by local residents. In Germany, border controls are carried out at 52 locations. The decision to maintain controls at internal Schengen borders continues to undermine the EU principle of free movement of people. However, Schengen countries are allowed to introduce border controls in what they consider to be 'emergency' situations, which occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, or as a 'last resort' for security threats.

Merz wants Europe to do more for its 'technological sovereignty'

Europe ought to do more for its "technological sovereignty," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Friday in Saarbrücken, the capital of Saarland, a small western German state on the border with France. He also wants to make cooperation in the field of technology the topic of a Franco-German Council of Ministers in the south of France at the end of this month. This was necessary, Merz asserted, "because we need to become stronger as Europeans." Merz had previously also visited the Helmholtz Centre for Information Security (Cispa) during an official inaugural visit to Saarland. He described its research work as "world class." The Cispa centre is one of the top research centres in the field of cybersecurity. "The dependencies we had on Russian gas are only part of the truth. The second part of the truth is that we are not sovereign enough in our own defence," Merz added. "And the third part of the truth is that we are also not sovereign enough when it comes to technological developments." He added: "We must not repeat the mistake that we all made together with regard to Russian gas in our defence and in our technological sovereignty." Germany relied on cheap Russian gas to a strong degree before Russia's attack on neighbouring Ukraine in February 2022. Solve the daily Crossword
