
Global Businesses Brace for Supply Chain Headwinds
This is according to the findings of HSBC's 2025 Global Trade Pulse Survey, which offers insight into the business plans and sentiment of over 5,700 international firms across 13 markets regarding tariffs and trade. The survey reveals that two thirds of corporations have already experienced cost increases due to tariff and trade uncertainty – and the worst may be yet to come. Companies expect costs to escalate further in both the short-term (73%) and the long-term (72%). Businesses also expect an average decline in revenues of 18% due to supply chain delays. Over half of respondents (51%) feel rising costs are the number one concern for supply chain strategies and 85% of corporates have revised or plan to revise their pricing strategy upwards to reflect higher costs or market changes.
Over three quarters of corporates (78%) are having to rethink their long-term business model. If tariff instability continues over the next two years, 43% of companies will rethink their international expansion strategy and 39% will shift their focus to domestic or regional markets.
Despite these headwinds, optimism about expanding global trade is strong. Nearly 9 in 10 businesses (89%) are confident in their ability to grow international trade over the next two years. Businesses are also reconfiguring their supply chains and reassessing how and where they operate. Most are taking action or planning to carry out nearshoring (moving production closer to key customer markets, 83%) and reshoring (bringing production back to their home country, 77%).
Businesses most likely to initiate nearshoring, a practice gaining most traction by globally exposed and production-centric sectors, are those in Technology, Media and Telecoms (87% have done so or plan to). Businesses most likely to have experienced an increase in costs to date are those in Consumer (70%), followed by Healthcare (69%), and TMT (69%).
Encouragingly, a vast number of respondents see trade pressure as a catalyst for innovation, with 77% saying it has encouraged them to evolve and seek new opportunities. Many businesses (58%) have already adopted new technologies or platforms, 56% have improved internal efficiency or cost structures, and 51% have developed new products or services.
The survey points to the emergence of new trade corridors in some of the markets surveyed and we are seeing global businesses strengthening their relationships with key markets outside their borders. Malaysia (61%) and Vietnam (52%) are expanding their relationships with China; India (54%) and the United States (51%) with Europe, and the United Kingdom (46%) and India (62%) with the United States. In some markets, optimism about international trade growth endures, led by India (96%) and the United Arab Emirates (94%).
In line with the global positive outlook, larger businesses (those with a revenue over $2 billion) are confident about their ability to grow international trade over the next two years (82%), although less so than the average, (89%). They are also more likely to have adopted new technology or digital platforms in response to trade uncertainty in comparison to smaller businesses (those with a revenue of less than $500m) at 63% vs. 56%. Larger firms are more cautious than smaller corporates about their decision making and are more likely to have already delayed or paused investments (38% vs.30%). This is despite larger companies having a much wider access to pools of working capital. Smaller firms on the other hand, are often more agile and quicker to make decisions despite lacking the capital depth of their larger counterparts.
Vivek Ramachandran, Head of Global Trade Solutions at HSBC, said: 'The current landscape of tariffs and trade uncertainty presents significant challenges for businesses, but they are showing great resilience and adaptability in the way they operate.'
'With over 70% of companies anticipating sustained cost increases, and businesses facing an average 18% drop in revenue, the imperative for strategic adaptation is clear. Navigating this climate requires not only agility, but strong partnerships to ensure sustained growth in a shifting global economy.'

Should big British banks face a windfall tax as profits soar?
A windfall tax on the profits of Britain's four biggest banks would boost Treasury coffers by billions of pounds, according to a report from think tank Positive Money. Taxing the profits of Barclays, NatWest, Lloyds and HSBC could raise more than £11billion for the Treasury, according to analysis by the think tank which campaigns for monetary reform. It comes as Britain's four biggest banks posted big profits for the financial year 2024/25 in their half-year results. The think tank said Britain's Big Four banks - Barclays, NatWest, Lloyds and HSBC - are on track to make a record £48billion profit in 2025, based on their results for the first half of this year. Barclays' saw pre-tax profits rocket 23 per cent to £5.2billion for the six months to 30 June. Meanwhile NatWest reported an 18 per cent rise in its first half profit to £3.6billion. Lloyds reported its pre-tax profit rose to £3.5billion in the six months to June, while HSBC saw pre-tax profits fall 26 per cent to £11.9billion ($15.8 billion) in the first half of the year. Collectively, their pre-tax profits for the first six months of this year stand at £24.1billion. Positive Money proposes a levy of 38 per cent on the estimated full-year net income for the Big Four's UK retail banking operations - which it forecasts to be £33billion - above a £800million threshold would deliver an £11.3billion boost to the Treasury. Should we have a windfall tax on banks? Positive Money's argument for a windfall tax is that banks are 'an essential public utility' like energy, and profits should be recouped accordingly. Simon Youel, head of policy and advocacy at Positive Money, says: 'Just as energy companies shouldn't be able to profiteer, neither should banks - taxing windfalls makes sense for both.' HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds, and NatWest reported pre-tax profits of £45.6billion for 2024, fuelled by higher interest rates. This was more than four times the profits recorded in 2020, before interest rates started rising. 'The government is quietly handing over tens of billions of pounds a year to the Bank of England to cover the costs of higher interest rates, much of which is ending up in the pockets of banks' shareholders,' says Youel. At the same time, the Chancellor is searching for funds to repair Britain's fraying public finances and there has been speculation that banks' strong gains could make the industry a tempting target for a tax raid by the Chancellor in her autumn Budget But the UK's biggest bank bosses have warned in no uncertain terms that levying bigger taxes on banks would strangle the growth the Government is grappling for. NatWest boss Paul Thwaite has warned Rachel Reeves against a tax raid on banks, saying: 'Strong economies need strong banks.' 'What I want to do is use the bank's capital to invest in the business but also to support customers. If we do that, that supports the wider UK growth agenda,' he added He is joined by Charlie Nunn, chief executive of Lloyds Banking Group, who said increasing taxes on banks 'wouldn't be consistent' with helping them boost the economy. Most recently Barclays boss CS Venkatakrishnan warned against additional taxes on banks. He said 'Growth is the primary objective for the UK and a higher taxation of businesses is not a path towards that growth.' How would a windfall tax on banks work? The windfall tax on banks proposed by Positive Money would be in line with the Energy Profits Levy on oil and gas companies. This windfall tax was introduced by the Government in May 2022 in response to soaring energy company profits following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The increase in energy prices sparked by the invasion led to bumper profits for energy companies, prompting to calls for a windfall tax. It is currently set at 38 per cent on profits and in the financial year 2023/24 the levy raised £3.6billion from oil and gas company profits. Positive Money says a bank windfall tax would follow in the footsteps of countries like Spain which recoups banking windfalls through a levy of 4.8 per cent of banks' net interest and commission from domestic retail banking above a threshold of €800million. If it were to be implemented in the UK, Positive Money says it would raise enough money to scrap the two-child benefit cap, estimated to cost the Government up to £3.5billion annually, and cover the cost of its recent u-turn on welfare. However, an International Monetary Fund report on the Spanish economy in 2024 found 'windfall levies do not constitute a growth-friendly consolidation strategy'.

Indian factory growth hits 16-month high, business outlook darkens, PMI shows
BENGALURU, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Indian manufacturing growth expanded at its fastest pace in 16 months in July, driven by robust demand, but business confidence fell to a three-year low amid competitive pressures and inflation concerns, a survey showed on Friday. The HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index, compiled by S&P Global (INPMI=ECI), opens new tab, rose to 59.1 in July from 58.4 in June, slightly below a preliminary reading of 59.2. The index remained well above the 50-mark separating growth from contraction. New orders increased at the fastest pace in nearly five years, buoyed by favourable market conditions and marketing efforts. That propelled output growth to a 15-month high. International demand continued to support overall sales although growth in export orders moderated from June's more than 17-year high. Despite the strong performance, manufacturers' optimism fell to its lowest level since July 2022. Companies cited mounting competition and inflation concerns as key challenges. The contrast between present conditions and future outlook was reflected in hiring patterns with employment increasing at the weakest pace since November 2024. A substantial 93% of manufacturers surveyed indicated their current workforce was adequate for production needs. A recent Reuters poll of independent economists highlighted growing employment concerns. Official government data showed an unemployment rate of 5.6% in June; however, some economists have questioned the accuracy of the measurement methodology. Inflation intensified in July with input costs rising faster as manufacturers faced higher prices for some raw materials. Companies raised selling prices for the 10th consecutive month as they leveraged strong demand to pass on costs. The Reserve Bank of India is poised to hold its key policy rate at 5.50% at its meeting next week, but any acceleration in inflation could affect the outlook on monetary policy. Adding to the uncertainty, U.S. President Donald Trump plans to impose 25% tariffs on Indian goods starting on Friday, a move that could drag on the export sector.

Hindustan Unilever hits nine-month high on gradual earnings recovery hopes
Aug 1 (Reuters) - India's Hindustan Unilever (HUL) ( opens new tab extended gains on Friday to climb as much as 8%, hitting a nine-month high, after it reported a higher first-quarter profit, with growth in revenue and sales volume pointing to a gradual earnings recovery. HUL, which is home to brands such as Dove soap and Surf Excel detergent, has been under pressure from dull urban consumption trends for several quarters. However, analysts see HUL's results as reflective of a gradually easing environment, with its stock receiving two ratings upgrades and at least 17 price-target hikes since Thursday. Its median target price from 39 analysts now stands at 2,607.50 rupees from 2,500 rupees a month earlier. The company's first-quarter volume growth was slightly better than estimated, noted brokerage Macquarie. "A gradual recovery of rural (demand) continued, while urban showed signs of a pickup." HUL was the top percentage gainer on the benchmark Nifty 50 index (.NSEI), opens new tab, flattish on the day, and among the top percentage boosts on the fast-moving consumer goods sub-index (.NIFTYFMCG), opens new tab, which ticked 1.5% higher. It closed 3.44% higher on Thursday after it announced its results, and was last trading 3% higher on Friday. Brokerage HSBC said it liked HUL's "volume-led growth strategy" amid intensifying competition. "Improving revenue growth to support outperformance," said JP Morgan. HUL's shares have gained 11% so far this year, compared to a 4.7% gain in the Nifty 50 and a 0.3% dip in the Nifty FMCG index.
