'It is very difficult to separate the success of the club from the ownership'

BBC News17-03-2025
Newcastle United supporters group NUFC Fans Against Sportswashing (NUFCFAS) say the club's Carabao Cup win on Sunday will be "tainted" for some due to the success coming under their current ownership.Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) led the takeover of Newcastle United in 2021 and the Gulf kingdom has been accused of 'sportswashing' in recent years after investing in sport and using high-profile events to improve its international reputation.Saudi Arabia has been criticised for its human rights violations, women's rights abuses, the criminalisation of homosexuality, the restriction of free speech, environmental record and the war in Yemen.Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan - the governor of the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia - was on the pitch after the match celebrating the club's first domestic trophy for 70 years.NUFCFAS issued a statement on Monday raising questions about the club's ownership. In it, the group said: "At the final we had the spectacle of Yasir al-Rumayyan holding the Carabao Cup aloft. Due to lack of scrutiny by the media, most fans will be unaware that the Newcastle United chairman is also a sitting Saudi minster and a right-hand man of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman."Fans of other clubs, while happy for our fans for winning our first domestic trophy in 70 years, are also pointing out that it comes at a price."We know that it should be a great day for the city of Newcastle and many will feel that way but for us it is unfortunately tainted by the ownership of the club."When we see the chairman celebrating with the trophy, it is very difficult to separate the success of the club from the ownership."John Hird, a founder of Newcastle supporters group NUFCFAS, also reflected on the Magpies' EFL Cup victory with his own personal statement."I was born a Toon fan," he said. "I remember my dad crying his eyes out after he came back from the Fairs Cup win in 1969. I still have the scrap book of the cup run he made me."I and many other Newcastle fans were fans long before the Saudis took over the club."We'll still be fans long after they've been forced out and we will have stayed true to our values and working-class traditions of solidarity."

Alexander Isak to Liverpool: Newcastle striker's three options after transfer bombshell

Alexander Isak has told Newcastle he wants to leave in the summer transfer window after having his head turned by Liverpool's enquiries - and now his future will be decided Alexander Isak has gone public with his desire to leave Newcastle this summer after having his head turned by interest from Liverpool. The 25-year-old striker has been omitted from Newcastle's squad for their pre-season tour and has become the biggest story in the summer transfer window. ‌ Isak is arguably the best striker in the Premier League, having scored 23 times in the top flight last season for Newcastle. He still has three years left on his current contract with Newcastle, but is clearly unhappy with his situation on Tyneside – despite what Eddie Howe says. ‌ The Sweden international has gone public with his desire to 'explore opportunities' in the transfer market after growing irritated with his status at Newcastle. He has scored 62 goals in 109 games since joining from Real Sociedad for £63million in August 2022, underlining his status as one of the best in the business. ‌ Yet he is currently paid around £120,000 per week by the Magpies and knows he could achieve much more elsewhere. He has reportedly demanded £300,000-a-week to sign a new contract with Newcastle, who would have to shatter their wage structure to make that happen, with Bruno Guimaraes the highest earner on £160,000-a-week at present. On the one hand, Newcastle are under little pressure to sell Isak, because they are in line with profit and sustainability rules and he is contracted for three more years. But keeping an unhappy player is fraught with complications and they are reportedly only willing to give him £200,000-a-week. That is Isak's first option: signing a new contract with Newcastle and spending at least another season there as they embark upon another season in the Champions League. Right now, though, that doesn't appear likely. His second option is Liverpool, who made enquiries about Isak's availability last week before signing Hugo Ekitike and remain interested. The Reds have splashed £265m on transfers this summer, but still have money in the bank to spend on Isak, thanks to their quiet summer of 2024, Premier League prize money and assets they can sell. It would take a record transfer of over £125m to make it happen, but with Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott available to sell, it could happen. Isak is understood to prefer a move to Anfield, where he could play alongside Ekitike, Mohamed Salah and Florian Wirtz in a new-look attack. ‌ Isak's third option is one that has been mulled over by many Premier League stars in recent years: moving to Saudi Arabia. With Newcastle owned by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, that avenue would appear to be open. Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal are reportedly able to offer staggering wages of around £500,000 a week after tax for the striker. The club have already lured Aleksandar Mitrovic, Joao Cancelo, Ruben Neves and Kalidou Koulibaly with their lucrative offers in the past, but Isak would represent an even bigger coup. ‌ HAVE YOUR SAY! Where will Alexander Isak end up? Comment below. 'Yes, I've had discussions with him, but that's not abnormal,' Howe said on the weekend after the Celtic no-show. 'I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him.' That noise is not going to go away until Isak's future is decided. His preference is clear. Now the ball is in Liverpool's court. Dan Burn responds to Alexander Isak speculation after Newcastle forward eyes transfer

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn gave his thoughts on the transfer speculation concerning teammate Alexander Isak as the 25-year-old striker faces a potential exit during the summer transfer window. Isak has been the subject of ongoing rumours with his future at the Premier League club in doubt following reports that he wants to 'explore his options' during the summer. The North East side are adamant that they want to retain his services heading into the new season but may be tempted by a big money offer with Premier League champions Liverpool having already made informal inquiries as to whether a deal can be done. Newcastle's players are currently on a pre-season tour of Asia, and will face Arsenal on Sunday, but Isak has been left out of the squad due to a 'minor thigh issue'. Speaking to Sky Sports, Burn revealed that losing 'any player' in this transfer window would upset the team and hopes Isak will remain at the club. 'I think if we lost any player it would upset us,' he said. 'We're a tight knit group that's been together for two, three years now so, yeah, any player that leaves it doesn't help. 'But, from out point of view we'll control what we can control. At the moment we're looking forward to getting Alex [Isak] back when he's fit.' According to Magpies boss Eddie Howe, Isak was also left out of last week's friendly defeat to Celtic due to 'speculation' around his future with the manager wanting to remove him from any potential scrutiny. Throughout this whole saga, Newcastle have been clear that they value Isak at £150m though should an big offer in the same region be placed on the table their resolve may be tested, especially with the knowledge that the player wants to consider his options. At that price point only a handful of teams across Europe would be able to afford the fee for Isak with Newcastle also holding a strong negotiating hand as the forward still has three years remaining on his current contract. Howe has also addressed Isak's situation and confirmed that he wants the striker to remain at the club. He said: "We have a few of those players who are irreplaceable. 'Your top players are so hard to find, so hard to recruit and so hard to develop. So when you have them, you need to treasure them. Of course we're desperate to keep him [Isak] as part of our team.'
