Gang near Sealdah hospitals seeks ‘help', dupes youth

Time of India21-06-2025
Kolkata: Seeking financial help for hospital treatment, followed by intimidation and threats, has emerged as yet another modus operandi being adopted by fraudsters.
Ashik Paria (23), a law student, was waiting between the Sealdah bridge and B R Singh Hospital, when a couple approached him, saying they needed an online transaction of Rs 5,000 for a hospitalised relative and that if he paid on the number they provided, they would repay him in cash immediately.
The couple even showed Paria a document, which seemed legitimate to the youth, said police. Convinced that the couple's need was genuine, Paria scanned the QR code on the couple's mobile payment service app and transferred Rs 5,000.
Once the transaction was completed, the man denied receiving the money, despite Paria showing on his own phone that the money had been sent, said police. Several others, evidently from the same gang, surrounded Paria and intimidated him, telling him to leave.
They threatened Paria if he dared to pursue the matter, police added.
Paria contacted his bank, trying to recover the money but even after a 48-hour investigation, the transaction could not be reversed. He then lodged a police complaint. "They were all part of a coordinated scam operation, using fear and deception to steal money from unsuspecting victims," stated Paria's police complaint lodged at the Muchipara PS.

Police said a similar case was reported in front of NRS Hospital, too, suggesting the gang operated around the Sealdah bridge.

MP: Harda tensions ease as curbs lifted, Karni Sena to stick to peaceful protest

In Harda, Madhya Pradesh, the dust appears to be settling after a weekend of unrest sparked by a confrontation between Karni Sena activists and police. The town, which witnessed widespread protests and heavy security deployment, is gradually returning to normalcy. District Collector Aditya Singh has lifted 163 prohibitory orders and authorised the release of those arrested during the 'chakka jam' demonstration. Despite these steps, local authorities remain cautious, noting that tensions could resurface as community leaders and supporters continue to express dissent. The atmosphere, while calmer, remains under close watch. The unrest began after Ashish Rajput, a Karni Sena official, filed a complaint alleging a fraud of Rs 18 lakh in a diamond deal involving three individuals. Police arrested one of the accused, Mohit Verma, and attempted to present him in court on Saturday. However, around 40 Karni Sena activists gathered outside the court, demanding custody of the accused and obstructing legal proceedings. The situation escalated, prompting police to resort to a lathi-charge and arrest four individuals, including district president Sunil Rajput and complainant Ashish Rajput. In a message posted on his X handle, Karni Sena national president Jeevan Singh Sherpur stated that the movement against injustice would continue, but without disrupting the lives of ordinary citizens. Superintendent of Police Abhinav Chouksey defended the police response through a video message on X handle, stating that the demand to hand over the accused was unconstitutional and that mild force was used only after activists misbehaved with constables at the police station. He emphasised that the incident stemmed from a personal grievance and should not have been linked to any organisation. The crackdown triggered widespread protests across the district, prompting the administration to impose Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (formerly Section 144) and seal Harda's borders. More than 50 arrests were made, and additional police forces were deployed from neighbouring districts, including Betul and Khandwa. On Monday morning, four senior Karni Sena leaders, including national president Jivan Singh Sherpur, were released conditionally in the presence of SDM Kumar Shanu Devdiya. Sherpur was released outside the district boundary after giving a written assurance not to participate in further demonstrations. District Collector Aditya Singh lifted 163 prohibitory orders late Sunday, signalling a cautious easing of restrictions. Despite this, the atmosphere remains volatile, with reports of Rajput community members mobilising across the state. Congress leaders have condemned the police action, calling it a violation of democratic rights and demanding an impartial inquiry. As social media continues to amplify the unrest, authorities are urging restraint and vigilance. The administration has submitted a detailed report to the Home Department in Bhopal, while the Karni Sena has announced plans to continue its agitation, with a new date to be decided.

Marriages sacrosanct to Hindus are at stake due to trivial issues between couples: Bombay High Court

NEW DELHI: Marriages, long regarded as sacrosanct in Hindu culture, are increasingly breaking down over minor and trivial issues, the Bombay High Court observed while quashing a dowry harassment case against a man and his family. In its July 8 order, the Nagpur bench comprising Justices Nitin Sambre and M M Nerlikar noted that in matrimonial disputes, if reconciliation is not possible, it is in the best interest of both parties to end the relationship promptly to prevent further harm to their lives. The bench was hearing a petition filed by a man and his family members seeking to quash a dowry harassment case lodged by his estranged wife in December 2023. The woman told the court she had no objection to the case being quashed, stating she wanted to move forward with her life. While quashing the case, the court noted that although offences under the Indian Penal Code and the Dowry Prohibition Act, including those related to dowry harassment and unnatural sex, are non-compoundable, courts have the authority to quash such proceedings in order to secure justice. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pensia Pilon 3 NN Pensia Facultativă NN Vezi oferta Undo The bench observed that with the growing trend of naming multiple family members in matrimonial disputes, it is essential to approach such cases with a fresh perspective. If both parties are willing to resolve their issues amicably and seek peace, the court has a responsibility to encourage and support such settlements, it added. "Marital discord has nowadays become a menace in the society due to various factors. Small issues between a couple spoil their entire life, and marriage, which is sacrosanct in Hindus, is at stake," the court said. The court emphasized that marriage is not just a social contract but a spiritual bond that unites two souls. It further observed that while various laws have been enacted to strengthen marital relationships, they are often misused. This misuse, the court noted, leads to mental and physical harassment, prolonged conflict, financial strain, and lasting damage to family members and children.
