Kidnapped, killed and dumped: Police nab three more suspects after Fugitivo band lured to death in Mexico
The five members of local band Fugitivo had been hired for a weekend performance in the crime-wracked northeastern city of Reynosa, but arrived to find a vacant lot. Their bodies were found several days later after their families reported receiving ransom demands.
Investigators said the musicians had been kidnapped on May 25 while driving to a private event.
Nine alleged cartel members were arrested last week, with authorities announcing another sting on Monday.
'An operation was carried out on three properties' in Reynosa, the public security office said in a statement, adding that the three suspects had been arrested there.
During the operation, weapons, weapons cartridges, cocaine and methamphetamines were also seized, the ministry added.
Tamaulipas is considered one of Mexico's most dangerous states due to the presence of gang members involved in drug and migrant trafficking, as well as extortion.
Criminal violence has claimed more than 480,000 lives in Mexico since 2006 and left around 120,000 people missing.
Mexican musicians have previously been targeted by criminal groups that pay them to compose and perform songs glorifying the exploits of their leaders. — AFP

Mayor shot dead at her office in southern Mexico

(EPA Images pic) OAXACA : Four armed men stormed a mayor's office in southern Mexico, killing her and another member of her staff today, police said, in the country's latest deadly targeting of a local politician. The men arrived on motorcycles at the town hall in San Mateo Pinas, in the state of Oaxaca, police said. After threatening officers guarding the facility, they stormed into mayor Lilia Garcia's office and proceeded to shoot her and another official, Eli Garcia, dead. Two municipal police officers were also wounded in the attack, authorities said. 'There can be no impunity for this act,' Oaxaca governor Salomon Jara wrote on social media. The state prosecutor's office said it was investigating the attack, while military and federal agents were deployed in the area. Dozens of local officials in Mexico have been targeted by organized crime groups in recent years, especially in areas where powerful drug trafficking gangs operate. The violence has recently spread to the capital, Mexico City, where two close associates of mayor Clara Brugada were murdered a month ago in public. 1 dead, 19 injured in Spanish retirement home fire
Police have launched an investigation into the blaze, believed to have been caused by an oxygen tank explosion. (EPA Images pic) MADRID : A blaze erupted in a retirement home in northeastern Spain killing a 93-year-old man and injuring 19 others, officials said today. The fire broke out in a ground-floor room at around 11pm yesterday at the home in the northeastern city of Zaragoza, local emergency services wrote on social network X. The man died at the scene and at least 19 other people were taken to hospitals to be treated for smoke inhalation, they said. The facility is home to 132 people. Emergency services workers and locals worked together to evacuate residents, some of whom had to be rescued through broken windows, according to local media reports. Police have launched an investigation into the blaze, with local media saying an oxygen tank explosion could have triggered the fire.
