Over 1,700 cases in trial stage: ED

Hans India02-05-2025
New Delhi: Over 1700 money laundering cases probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are currently in the trial stage and the delay in courts can be attributed to the general delay in the justice system in the country, Enforcement Directorate Director Rahul Navin said on Thursday.
The top officer of the Enforcement Directorate, however, said the conviction rate of the Enforcement Directorate cases was 93.6 per cent as out of 47 cases decided by courts till now, there have been only three acquittals.
A total of 1,739 cases of PMLA are under trial at present and the delay in prosecution in the money laundering cases can be attributed to general delay in the justice system in the country, he said while addressing the Enforcement Directorate Day event held here. Navin said he "candidly" acknowledges pending investigation in PMLA cases, saying it will be the agency's efforts to file chargesheets in such cases before courts.
He said the Enforcement Directorate will use advanced technology and forensics in its investigations.
The federal probe agency has completed 69 years of its existence as it was established on May 1, 1956.

UP religious conversion racket: ED raids 2 places in Mumbai linked to ‘associate' of Chhangur Baba

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) Wednesday began raiding two places in Mumbai belonging to Shahzad Sheikh, a suspected associate of Jamaluddin alias Chhangur Baba, the mastermind of an alleged religious conversion racket based in Uttar Pradesh. ED is raiding Sheikh's two houses, one in Mahim West and another in Bandra (East). The agency is likely to share details of the seizure made from the house search after the action is concluded. The action is part of ED's crackdown on the alleged conversion racket under which the agency is also raiding 12 places in the Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh. The agency is investigating the money laundering and foreign funding aspects of the racket, which is suspected to have carried out dozens of financial transactions using bank accounts in foreign countries. Sources in the agency said that while Chhangur Baba's financial dealings were examined, investigators discovered transactions exceeding Rs 1 crore involving Sheikh. They noted Naveen alias Jamaluddin, another suspected close associate of Chhangur Baba, allegedly transferred this money into Sheikh's account. Naveen's wife Neetu alias Nasreen is the owner of the house in Uttar Pradesh where Chhangur Baba had been living for the past few years. The couple, who hailed from Mumbai and were allegedly converted into Islam by Baba, have been arrested along with Baba and are currently in judicial custody. The Uttar Pradesh Police, while acting on the complaint of a suspicious foreign funding racket to buy properties in India, unearthed the alleged religious conversion racket run by Chhangur Baba, who was living in the Madhpur area in the Rampur district. According to the UP Police, the racket targeted non-Muslims from a financially weaker background. Victims, including widows, were systematically coerced into converting through allurements, financial aid, and false promises of marriage, as per the police. The police also stated that none of the racket's victims would dare to go against them, as they would be warned of direct legal consequences. They would charge around Rs 8-16 for the conversions, depending on the person's religion, caste, and financial background. During the inquiry, after finding sufficient material indicating a cognisable offence, the police registered a case last year at the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) police station in Lucknow, and a hunt for Baba was launched as he had gone into hiding. Earlier this month, Baba and Nasreen were arrested by the Lucknow ATS team from a hotel. Police sources report that members of the alleged racket have travelled to Islamic countries multiple times in the past and opened numerous bank accounts, either under their own names or in the names of various organisations. Transactions involving these accounts have been found to total around Rs 100 crore.

ED files chargesheet against Robert Vadra in Shikohpur land deal case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet against businessman Robert Vadra, the brother-in-law of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in connection with a money laundering case linked to a land deal in Shikohpur in Haryana. An ED official said after completing their investigation, a prosecution complaint was filed at the Rouse Avenue Court against 11 individuals or entities: Robert Vadra and his entities, including M/s Sky Light Hospitality Pvt Ltd and others, and Satyanand Yajee and Kewal Singh Virk, including their entity M/s Onkareshwar Properties Pvt Ltd, have been arrayed as accused. The court is yet to take cognisance of the prosecution complaint. The ED initiated its investigation on the basis of an FIR registered by the Gurgaon police on September 1, 2018. The FIR alleges that Vadra, through Sky Light Hospitality Pvt Ltd, fraudulently purchased 3.53 acres of land in Shikohpur village in Gurgaon's Sector 83 from Onkareshwar Properties Pvt Ltd on February 12, 2008, through a false declaration. 'Probe has revealed that the commercial license was also obtained by Robert Vadra on the land through his personal influence. A provisional attachment order was issued on July 16, 2025 in which 43 immovable properties amounting to Rs 37.64 crore pertaining to Robert Vadra and his entities M/s Sky Light Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. and others have been attached,' the ED official said. Criticising the move as 'political vendetta', Vadra had in April this year claimed that attempts were made to silence him and Rahul Gandhi. 'When I speak in favour of the country, I am stopped, Rahul is stopped from speaking in Parliament. The BJP is doing it. This is political vendetta,' he had said. 'People love me and want me to join politics… When I express my willingness to join politics, they bring up old issues to bring me down and divert from the real issues…,' he had added. In February 2008, Skylight Hospitality, which Vadra had launched in 2007 with a capital of Rs 1 lakh, bought about 3.5 acres of land in Manesar-Shikohpur in Gurgaon from Onkareshwar Properties for Rs 7.5 crore. The plot was mutated in favour of Skylight the next day, and the title of the land was reportedly transferred to Vadra within 24 hours of the purchase. This process usually takes at least three months. A month later, the Haryana government, which was then headed by Bhupinder Singh Hooda, gave Skylight Hospitality permission to develop a housing project on most of the land. This led to an immediate increase in the value of the land. In June 2008, real estate company DLF agreed to buy the plot for Rs 58 crore, which meant that in just a few months, the value of Vadra's property had increased by close to 700 per cent. The payment was made to Vadra in instalments, and it was only in 2012 that the mutation transferring the colony licence on the land was transferred to DLF. In 2018, an FIR was registered against Hooda, who was the chief minister of Haryana from 2005 to 2014, as well as against Vadra, and real estate companies DLF and Onkareshwar Properties for alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating, fraud, and forgery, and under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Hooda, Vadra, and the Congress have always denied any wrongdoing in this regard.

ED raids in Rs 100-crore 'cheating' case against promoters of Bengaluru bank

BENGALURU: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday raided multiple locations in and around Bengaluru as part of a money laundering probe linked to an alleged fraud of Rs 100 crore with more than 15,000 depositors by the promoters of a local bank, officials sources said. The probe pertains to Shushruti Souhardha Bank, Shruthi Souharda Bank and Shree Lakshmi Souharda Bank and their promoters, including N Srinivas Murthy and his family members, the sources said. At least 15 locations in and around the city were searched by the agency under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The allegations against the promoters pertain to cheating of over Rs 100 crore from more than 15,000 depositors by luring them to make deposits with high interest. These funds were "diverted" through unsecured loans to associates and most of the loans became non performing assets (NPAs) and the money was laundered and used to buy properties, the sources said. The federal probe agency has detected more than 20 "high-value" properties linked to the promoters and these could be attached under the anti-money laundering law in the future, they said.
