'They requested that people respect the rāhui and do not conduct water activities, or gather fish and shellfish at Arkles Bay during this time,' a police spokesperson said.
The rāhui is a traditional Māori practice, often implemented following a death near or in a natural body of water. It serves both as a mark of respect for the deceased and as a time for spiritual and environmental cleansing.

1 2 3 4 Ranchi: A total of 12 accused wanted in two cases have been arrested on Saturday, Ranchi SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha said on Sunday. Nine were accused of robbing Namkum-based electricity department's central store on July 15. Another three members of a Durgapur-based gang were planning to steal from a power grid centre at Ormanjhi, he added. Police said that in the first case, 11 armed miscreants had broken into the Namkum-based electricity department's central store on July 15 and taken the employees captive before decamping with copper clips, conductors, and plate angles worth around Rs 16 lakh. The SSP said, "A case was registered and a special investigation team (SIT) led by DSP Amar Kumar Pandey formed to solve the case. Based on a tip-off and technical inputs, nine accused were arrested from different areas of the district. An auto rickshaw, a machine to cut wire, and the stolen materials were seized from the arrested." 1 2 Daltonganj: Palamu superintendent of police (SP) Reeshma Ramesan suspended the officer in-charge of the Pipra Tarn police station, Rajvardhan, over "colossal intelligence failure" . The suspension order, issued on July 25, comes in the wake of a scandal involving a staged kidnapping and illegal activities under the officer's jurisdiction. The SP said, "The officer in-charge failed to act on illegal activities occurring right under his nose, involving police station chowkidar Vinod Paswan and his son Niraj." The case unfolded when four men from Ludhiana, including Harmeet and Satbeer, travelled to Titlangi to purchase poppy husks. The controversy deepened with the revelation of a staged kidnapping for ransom involving Harmeet and Satbeer. The kidnapping, orchestrated by locals, including Niraj, was a cover for a poppy husk smuggling operation. The staged kidnapping resulted in Rs 7.50 lakh being extracted from their families. Bijnor: A court in Amroha has sentenced a woman to life imprisonment after finding that she had strangled her 14-year-old daughter and tried to pass it off as suicide. Pronouncing the verdict, the court of the additional sessions judge (special Pocso Act II) Arvind Kumar Shukla said, "A mother killing her daughter is a shame on humanity. The crime committed by her is extremely cruel and serious in nature," the court said. The woman's lover was acquitted due to insufficient evidence. Rani Verma, 34, originally from Gangacholi village, was living with her daughter Khushboo and a son in Mohalla Kala Shaheed in Hasanpur after a dispute with her husband Sushil Verma. On Dec 21, 2023, while her son was away, she strangled Khushboo — who had caught her in a compromising position with her lover, Anil Kumar. Rani rushed Khushboo to a private hospital and told neighbours and relatives the girl had died by suicide, but neighbours found her actions odd. Police arrived and found the girl hanging in a room, but soon grew suspicious about the crime scene. A circle officer said, "The woman tried to mislead everyone by saying her daughter died by suicide.
