PSG vs Inter Miami - Club World Cup: Live score, team news and updates as Champions League winners look to qualify for last-eight
Well, by some, I mean me. As soon as I knew I would be covering PSG's Club World Cup round of 16 tie with Inter Miami, my mind instantly went to the little Argentine magician.
If you have been following this tournament, you will know that Mess-mania has swept the US, with every single Miami game a sell-out. It's quite crazy, considering the quiet crowds in other big games.
It's no different today. Floods of people are already arriving at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta just to get a glimpse of what many consider the GOAT, as he takes on his former side.
This is not a fixture I ever thought would come. Even in the group stages, there was no way I could see the side owned by David Beckham making it to the knockouts.
But here they are, about to take on the best team in the world, who won the Champions League just last month.
It shows just how massive Messi is, mind. The fact that the European champions are in town, but the crowds are only this big because of one man. The magic man.
Right then, shall we get cracking? I think we shall.

Lakers sign center DeAndre Ayton
July 2 - The Los Angeles Lakers and free agent Deandre Ayton agreed to terms Wednesday afternoon, shortly after the center cleared waivers and became an unrestricted free agent, according to multiple media reports. Ayton made headlines in recent days after he and his most recent team, the Portland Trail Blazers, mutually agreed to forgo the final year of his contract and negotiate a buyout, allowing him to reach free agency. Between money owed to him by Portland and his new deal with Los Angeles, Ayton is set to earn $34 million this season, per reporting from ESPN. Despite being a seven-year pro with 398 NBA games on his resume, Ayton is still just 26. His birthday is July 23. A former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, Ayton has averaged 16.4 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game in 398 career games (391 starts). New Lakers teammate Luka Doncic was the No. 3 choice in that same draft. He was a part of the 2018-19 All Rookie first team, though arguably his greatest achievement as a professional was being part of the Suns team that lost in a memorable series with Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals in 2021. Portland acquired him as part of a three-team trade with Milwaukee and Phoenix that sent All-Star guard Damian Lillard from the Trail Blazers to the Bucks on Sept. 27, 2023. --Field Level Media

NBA adjusts record of all-time wins leader Gregg Popovich
July 2 - Gregg Popovich's all-time record for coaching victories is now 32 smaller. The NBA adjusted Popovich's record after he missed the last 77 games of the 2024-25 season due to a stroke. The Spurs went 32-45 in those games, coached by Mitch Johnson. Popovich, who relinquished his head-coaching duties after the season, now has a 1,390-824 record. He's still the record-holder by 55 wins over Don Nelson (1,335). Johnson served as the interim coach after Popovich stepped aside five games into the season due to his health issues. The Spurs named Johnson the full-time coach when the 76-year-old Popovich stepped away to become a team president. Popovich has won five NBA titles during his Hall of Fame head coaching career that began in 1996-97 with the Spurs. He guided San Antonio to an NBA record 18 straight 50-win seasons. The streak was snapped with a 47-35 record in 2017-18. --Field Level Media

Deandre Ayton set to join LeBron, Luka and the Lakers after Portland buyout
Center Deandre Ayton has agreed to join the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent, two people with knowledge of the deal told the Associated Press on Wednesday. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal could not yet be announced between the Lakers and Ayton, the No 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft – two spots ahead of Luka Dončić. The Portland Trail Blazers bought out Ayton's contract last weekend, and he has agreed to join Dončić and LeBron James on a one-year deal with a player option for 2026-27. He will be paid more than $25m by the Blazers while playing for the Lakers in the upcoming season. Ayton's arrival fills the Lakers' most glaring offseason need. He will provide a lob target for James and Dončić while adding the defensive size in the middle that they have missed since trading Anthony Davis to Dallas for Dončić. Ayton spent his first five NBA seasons with Phoenix before joining the Trail Blazers two years ago. He struggled in Portland while playing for mediocre teams, but he has averaged 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds during his seven seasons while making 59% of his shots. The Lakers struggled without Davis in the paint last season, with Jaxson Hayes playing poorly enough to get benched by coach JJ Redick in the final games. Los Angeles were eliminated from the first round of the playoffs by Minnesota in five games, with big man Rudy Gobert racking up 27 points and 24 rebounds in the clinching victory while the Lakers largely played without a center.
