Among the milestones of childhood — your first lost tooth, first bike ride, first day of school — burning down the family home doesn't usually make the list. But growing up on a farm in Idaho, my childhood wasn't exactly typical.
I was eight. I hadn't done anything intentionally reckless — just left a lampshade-less reading lamp resting on a pillow. On my way downstairs to breakfast, I left the light on. A little while later, my dad smelled smoke. By the time help arrived, the fire had consumed everything. Our home was gone.
What amazes me most now isn't the fire — it's what my father chose to do afterward.
The weight of a mistake and the wisdom of timing
I didn't find out it was my fault until I was 16.
Apparently, the fire chief had advised my father not to tell me right away. The emotional weight of responsibility at that age could've been damaging. I'm grateful my dad waited. His decision wasn't just kind — it was strategic. It allowed me to grow up without carrying a burden I wasn't ready to process.
Looking back, I see this now as a masterclass in leadership. Not the kind they teach in business school — but the kind that matters most when you're running a company, managing people and deciding how to handle failure.

How you handle mistakes shapes your culture
As a small business owner, your team is smaller, your margin for error thinner and your influence bigger. That means every misstep can feel amplified. But it also means that how you respond to mistakes doesn't just fix a problem — it defines your culture.
The best leaders don't respond to every mistake the same way. They know when to be firm and when to give someone the grace to grow.
Here's what I've learned about finding that balance:
1. Not all mistakes are created equal
Some errors are innocent, caused by inexperience, unclear instructions or bad luck. Others are rooted in carelessness, repeated oversight or a disregard for values. Learn to spot the difference before you react.
For example, a new employee sends a wrong invoice once? That's a teaching moment. An experienced team member sends wrong invoices every month? That's a pattern.
2. Grace builds loyalty
When people feel safe owning their mistakes, they grow faster and become more loyal. Correct gently. Ask questions. Share how you've screwed up in the past. Turning a mistake into a learning opportunity builds stronger teams and better humans.
You might say, "Let's walk through what happened and figure out how to make sure it doesn't happen again."
3. Consistency builds accountability
If someone keeps making the same mistake, or it's something that could hurt your business or brand, be direct. Set clear expectations. Communicate consequences. Your team needs to know that while you're kind, you're also serious about standards.
You could say, "We've talked about this before. I need to know you're taking it seriously — and what you'll do differently next time."
4. Correct the behavior, not the person
You can be tough without being cruel. Focus on the behavior, not the character of the person. Never shame. When employees feel respected, even hard feedback is easier to receive and more likely to be applied.
5. Set the tone from the top
How you handle mistakes teaches your team how to handle their own. If you hide failures, blame others or explode under pressure, you create fear. If you own your mistakes and respond with clarity, you model what growth looks like.
Your people will copy you, for better or worse.

The pilot of SkyWest flight 3788 told passengers that the craft had managed to evade the B-52 after executing an "aggressive maneuver." "I don't know how fast they were going, but they were a lot faster than us, I felt it was the safest thing to do to turn behind it," the pilot said while apologizing to passengers, per a recording of the conversation. "It caught me by surprise, this is not normal at all. I don't know why they didn't give us a heads up, because the Air Force base does have radar," the pilot continued, adding that it was "not a fun day at work." When approached for comment, Delta Air Lines referred Business Insider to SkyWest Airlines. SkyWest said the flight was originally "cleared for approach by the tower but performed a go-around when another aircraft became visible in their flight." It added that the plane had landed safely in Minot and they are "investigating the incident." A US Air Force spokesperson told BI in a statement that the B-52 had been conducting a flyover as part of a "special event recognizing the city of Minot as a 'Great American Defense Community.'" "The flyover was planned in advance and approved by the Federal Aviation Administration," the spokesperson said Crew members were in constant contact with "the FAA's local Flight Standards District Office, Minot International Airport air traffic control personnel, and Minot Approach Control" during the flyover, the statement added. It said that the airport's air traffic control personnel "did not advise of the inbound commercial aircraft." The FAA said in a statement to BI on Monday that it is investigating the incident. It added that the airport's air traffic services were "run by a private company" and the "controllers are not FAA employees." In January, an American Airlines flight collided with a UH-60 Black Hawk as it neared the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The collision killed all 67 people abroad the two aircraft. The terrifying moment was captured on video by Josh Kadrmas from the North Dakota State Fairgrounds. Kadrmas told NBC News he was in the crowd for opening day of the fair, waiting for the scheduled B-52 flyover, when he pointed his phone toward the sky. 'We could see the exhaust from the B-52 far to the east, so I started recording as it was announced to the crowd the B-52 was going to fly over the grandstand." By chance, Kadrmas filmed Delta Flight 3788, operated by SkyWest, as it shared airspace with the military aircraft. 'I didn't think this would be a disaster at the time as the smaller plane was difficult to see from the stands," he explained to NBC. A passenger filmed the aftermath Passenger, Monica Green (@monicagreenofficial) captured the aftermath on the SkyWest flight in a video uploaded to TikTok. In the video, the pilot is heard apologizing to passengers, saying: "Given his speed ... I don't know how fast they were going, but they were a lot faster than us. The Air Force has since placed the blame squarely on the shoulders of air traffic controllers. A statement released by Minot Air Force Base says: 'The flyover was planned in advance and approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. This included the FAA's local Flight Standards District Office, Minot International Airport air traffic control personnel, and Minot Approach Control (RAPCON). The following paragraph expands to say that the B-52 crew communicated the flyover plan to RAPCON and Minot International Airport's air traffic control tower before departure. The statement says the Minot Approach directed the B-52 crew at 7:43 p.m. to contact Minot International Airport's air traffic control. When they did so, the tower instructed the aircraft to continue 2 miles westbound after the flyover. The tower did not inform the B-52 pilots that there was an inbound commercial plane in the vicinity. The FAA is investigating The statement concludes by saying: 'The B-52 crossed the fairgrounds show center at 7:50 p.m. and proceeded west as directed to clear Minot International Tower's airspace before returning to Minot AFB.' According to the statement, the FAA is investigating the incident.

The University of Pittsburgh will be using a hotel in Oakland and some off-campus apartments to help house incoming students this fall. According to a University spokesperson, Pitt is welcoming a record amount of first-year students this fall. With the record number of students soon descending upon Oakland, the University says that housing assignments have been shared with a majority of the incoming class, but some students have been notified that their housing hasn't been determined yet. As a result, the University says it has leased space for more than 400 beds from the Webster Apartments and the Pennsylvania Apartments, both located along North Dithridge Street, and from the Hampton Inn on Hamlet Street. The University says it has also added nearly 300 beds "by leveraging other existing facilities to best meet the needs of our students, including the renovated and recently reopened Franklin Apartments at 305 Atwood Street." All of the off-campus housing assignments, that the University says they expect to be sent to students later this week, are located less than a mile from campus and "meet the University's standards for safety, amenities, and access to campus resources." The University says that students who will be living in the off-campus housing will still have a Resident Assistant and "all other traditional supports one would have in a dorm/residence hall."
