Beat the Lotto review: An irresistible documentary about an audacious plan that captured Ireland's imagination
Beat the Lotto Director : Ross Whitaker Cert : G Genre : Documentary Starring : Stefan Klincewicz Running Time : 1 hr 22 mins On Friday, May 29th, 1992, agents monitoring the National Lottery spotted odd purchasing activity. People were visiting out-of-the-way newsagents and post offices around Ireland to buy Lotto tickets in bulk. Some of them were spending up to £70,000 – this is pre-euro – in a single transaction. With a rollover scheduled for Saturday, the jackpot had swelled to an impressive £1.7 million. Someone was attempting to outsmart the system. Enter Stefan Klincewicz , a Cork-born accountant and passionate philatelist of Polish heritage and the hero of the irresistible documentary Beat the Lotto, about a plan that captured the nation's imagination. The idea was simple, if not inexpensive: using mathematical analysis, Klincewicz reckoned the system could be cracked if he could just gather enough people to form a syndicate to buy every single number combination. [ The Irish syndicate that beat the Lotto: 'It wasn't illegal to do what they did' Opens in new window ] Ultimately, he and 100 associates – a self-styled crowd of reprobates – bought 80 per cent of the 1,947,792 combinations then available given the number of balls at the time. The money is important; 'the craic' adds further motivation. READ MORE Ross Whitaker , the director of this documentary, is perhaps best known for his portraits Katie Taylor and The Boys in Green . He invests this pre-Celtic Tiger tale with the punch-the-air rhythms of a sports movie, replete with a last-minute intervention from the authorities. Archive footage of Ray Bates, the charming, accordion-playing public face of the National Lottery, adds further gaiety to proceedings. [ The Boys in Green: 'It felt as if we had been in recession my entire life when Italia '90 happened' Opens in new window ] Whitaker has a fascinating subject in Klincewicz and a winning aesthetic in his judiciously selected low-fi cuts from Irish TV in the late 1980s and early 1990s, skilfully assembled by editor Nathan Nugent. Against this grim-looking place, hit by emigration and the high unemployment that helped to prompt it, this is a much-needed good-news story, then and now. In cinemas from Friday, July 4th

Amor Vittone claps back at claims she was divorced from Joost
Amor Vittone has clapped back at claims she was divorced from the late Springbok Joost van der Westhuizen when he died in 2017. The singer and actress wed the rugby player in 2002 and were separated at the time of his death, after a long battle with motor neurone disease. What followed was a bitter, public dispute over his will. Speaking on Jacaranda FM last week, Amor Vittone clarified the confusion surrounding her relationship status with the late Joost van der Westhuizen. She told Martin Bester: 'We weren't divorced, I am widowed. Does it make a difference?'. The former Lotto presenter married the celebrated Springbok in 2002 in community of property. The nuptials occurred months after his divorce from his first wife, Marlene, was finalised. During their marriage, Joost and Amor welcomed two children, son Jordan and daughter Kylie. Amor Vittone and Joost van der Westhuizen's marriage was prime tabloid fodder, filled with allegations of infidelity, drugs, and even claims their romance began while the Springbok was still married, the latter of which both denied. In 2010, the rugby's golden couple began divorce proceedings. But, despite persistent social media commentary, the duo were not divorced but instead separated at the time of his death. According to Joost & Amor: Behind the Headlines author Gavin Prins, the couple had reconciled but lived in separate homes. Amor was supportive of her spouse and often visited him with their two children. Amor Vittone and her late husband, Joost van der Westhuizen. Image via Facebook The contents of Joost van der Westhuizen's will were made public in the months following his death. According to his family lawyer, Ulrich Roux, the popular player reportedly updated his will in 2015, appointing his brother Pieter as his executor. In the new will, he left his entire estate to his two children with Amor Vittone: son Jordan and daughter Kylie v,ia his trust. To his wife of 15 years, he left a mere television set. However, Amor maintains that the 2009 joint will, in which she was Joost's only heir, was his only valid will. According to IOL, Amor petitioned the Supreme Court for leave to appeal the court's ruling on the will. In a 2018 social media statement, Amore revealed that she would 'appeal to death' Fast forward to 2022, Amor confirmed that the dispute over the will was ongoing. In an interview on Laataand by Rian last year, Amor recalled how Joost promised to always provide for her and her children. She claimed he wrote her a letter begging for her forgiveness.
