Indians Stretch, Breathe and Balance to Mark International Day of Yoga
The mass yoga sessions were held in many Indian states where crowds attempted various poses and practiced breathing exercises. Indian military personnel also performed yoga in the icy heights of the Siachen Glacier in the Himalayas and on naval ships anchored in the Bay of Bengal. Similar sessions were planned in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.
'I feel that yoga keeps us spiritually fit, mentally fit, and helps us manage stress. That's why I feel that people should take out at least 30 minutes every day for yoga to keep themselves fit,' said Rajiv Ranjan, who participated in an event in the Indian capital of New Delhi.
Yoga is one of India's most successful cultural exports after Bollywood. It has also been enlisted for diplomacy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has harnessed it for cultural soft power as the country takes on a larger role in world affairs.
Modi persuaded the UN to designate the annual International Day of Yoga in 2014. The theme this year was 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health.'
Modi performed yoga among a seaside crowd in the southern city of Visakhapatnam and said, 'Yoga leads us on a journey toward oneness with the world.' Amid a checkerboard of yoga mats covering the beach, Modi took his spot on a mat and did breathing exercises, backbends, and other poses.
'Let this Yoga Day mark the beginning of Yoga for humanity 2.0, where inner peace becomes global policy,' he said.
As Modi has pushed yoga, ministers, government officials, and Indian military personnel have gone on social media to show themselves folding in different poses.
In New Delhi, scores of people from all walks of life and age groups gathered at the sprawling Lodhi Gardens, following an instructor on stage.
'Yoga for me is like balancing between inner world and outer world,' said Siddharth Maheshwari, a startup manager who joined the event.

Philippines kicks off free health-screening program for Filipinos in Bahrain
MANILA: The Philippines launched on Friday a month-long health-screening program for Filipino workers in Bahrain, as Manila seeks to promote wellness among its citizens abroad. Gulf countries have for years been the main overseas destination for Filipinos, with some 57,000 currently living and working in Bahrain. The 'Healthy Pinoy' campaign, a project spearheaded by the Philippine Embassy in Bahrain in collaboration with the Al-Hilal Healthcare Group, offers free blood testing and doctor consultations for Filipino workers. 'This project, which is in its second year, was conceptualized with the view of promoting health and wellness of the Filipinos in Bahrain by providing them free health screening (and) health check-ups … This will be for the whole month of August,' Consul Bryan Baguio from the Philippine Embassy in Bahrain told Arab News. Philippine nationals are entitled to get free tests for blood sugar, cholesterol, uric acid, as well as kidney and liver screening, he said, as well as a complimentary medical consultation for a further evaluation. The services are available at all nine hospitals under the Al-Hilal Healthcare Group across Bahrain, including in Manama, Muharraq and Askar. The embassy also brought a consular outreach mission on the first day of the campaign, Baguio added, which is providing various services for workers. 'We're doing this mission in conjunction with the launching because it will be a Friday, which is a rest day for our countrymen here in Bahrain. So this will be an opportunity for them to avail and to consult with the embassies on various services on their day off,' he said. In 2024, the free health-screening program benefited about 1,000 Filipinos and was held at only one hospital. With additional locations this year, embassy officials are expecting more people to participate. 'Now it will be in nine Al-Hilal hospitals, and we are also adding the complimentary doctor consultations. So we expect more, more than 1,000,' Baguio said. 'Health is a top priority of Filipinos in Bahrain, and that is what we intend to do — to promote the health and wellness of our nationals here by providing them free healthcare services.'

Biocon aims to launch generic Wegovy drug for weight loss in India, Canada within two year
Biocon aims to launch generic copies of the blockbuster weight-loss drug Wegovy in India and Canada within the next two years, a top executive told Reuters, seeking to tap into a market that is estimated to grow to $150 billion globally by the early 2030s. The push comes after Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk and US-based rival Eli Lilly saw skyrocketing demand for their obesity drugs Wegovy and Zepbound. Biopharmaceutical company Biocon plans to submit a request for approval to India's drug regulator by the end of 2026 and potentially launch in 2027 through a partner, CEO Siddharth Mittal said in an email interview on Tuesday. The company, which also makes insulin products, expects to complete late-stage trials within the next 12 to 18 months, he added. 'Biocon is actively progressing with filings for semaglutide in Canada as well as many other emerging markets,' Mittal said. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Novo's drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, used for diabetes and weight-loss management. Indian generic drugmakers, including Dr Reddy's and Cipla, have been racing to produce cheaper versions of Wegovy when semaglutide goes off patent in 2026. Novo launched Wegovy in India for diabetes and weight-loss management in June after Lilly's Mounjaro sales doubled within a few months following its launch in the south Asian country. Biocon plans to file with Canadian regulatory authorities this quarter for generic versions of Ozempic and later this year for Wegovy versions. 'Subject to approval, we could look at a market launch in late 2026 or early 2027,' he said. Canada has not approved any such therapies yet, the company said. In addition to Canada, Biocon will focus on large emerging markets such as Brazil and Mexico in Latin America, Malaysia and Hong Kong, countries in the Middle East, as well as Australia, and New Zealand to launch obesity drugs, according to the CEO. In markets where Biocon does not have a direct presence, it is seeking local partnerships to commercialize its products, Mittal said.

Burjeel buys physiotherapy center in Saudi Arabia
Abu Dhabi-listed Burjeel Holdings announced that its subsidiary, Burjeel Arabia, completed the acquisition of the PhysioTrio Physiotherapy Center in Riyadh. The center will now become part of Burjeel's PhysioTherabia network, the largest and fastest-growing physiotherapy and wellness network in the Kingdom.
