EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) announced today that Barbie® is debuting the first Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes (T1D). This addition to the line enables more children to see themselves reflected in Barbie and encourages doll play that extends beyond a child's own lived experience, thereby fostering a greater sense of inclusion and empathy – all pillars of the Barbie brand's mission.

To ensure the doll design truly captures the community, Barbie partnered with Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF), the leading global type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organization committed to accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications. T1D is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes the pancreas to make very little insulin or none at all, leading to dependence on insulin therapy and the risk of short and or long-term complications. Barbie worked closely with Breakthrough T1D to accurately reflect the medical equipment those with this condition may utilize and the doll's look, all the way down to the dress pattern:
Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM): The doll wears a CGM on her arm to help manage her type 1 diabetes. CGMs are small, wearable devices that continuously measure a person's blood-sugar levels. To keep her CGM in place, she uses heart-shaped medical tape – Barbie pink, of course – along with a phone that displays a CGM app to help track her blood sugar levels throughout the day.
Insulin Pump: Barbie has an insulin pump, a small, wearable medical device that allows for automated insulin dosing as needed, attached to her waist.
Blue Polka Dot Outfit: The doll wears a stylish polka dot top and matching skirt with ruffles. Both the color blue and circle print are nods to the global symbols that represent diabetes awareness.
Purse: The doll comes with a pastel blue purse, perfect for Barbie to carry any essentials, such as type 1 diabetes supplies or snacks, when she's on the go.

In continued partnership with Breakthrough T1D, Barbie donated dolls to the Breakthrough T1D 2025 Children's Congress. The biennial event, July 7-9, brings 170 children living with type 1 diabetes, ages 4-17, to Washington, DC, to meet face-to-face with members of Congress. The youth delegates travel to the nation's capital from all 50 states and Breakthrough T1D's international affiliates in the United Kingdom, Australia, Israel, the Netherlands, and Canada.
Barbie also honored two global role models and type 1 diabetes advocates – Peloton Instructor Robin Arzón in the US and model Lila Moss in the UK – with their own one-of-a-kind Barbie dolls. Arzón unveiled the new Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes and her one-of-a-kind Barbie doll at Peloton Studios NY on July 8th. Attendees and Members of the type 1 diabetes community were delighted to experience this first-of-its-kind unveiling moment.

The Barbie Fashionistas line features more than 175 looks across various skin tones, eye colors, hair colors and textures, body types, disabilities, and fashion styles, including a Blind Barbie doll, a Barbie doll with Down Syndrome, and a Barbie doll with Hearing Aids, among others. In 2020, Barbie kicked off a multi-year study with researchers at Cardiff University on the short-term and long-term benefits of doll play. It has been found that doll play serves an incredible purpose during key developmental stages, as it may help set children on a course for success by fostering empathy and developing social skills needed to excel, all while imagining their futures on an equal playing field.
The 2025 Barbie Fashionistas dolls commit to a minimum of 50% ISCC-Certified bio-circular plastic (Mass Balance Approach), with all boxes made from FSC-certified materials. But this particular doll stands out with a wearable insulin pump on her waist, a glucose monitor on her arm and a phone showing her blood sugar readings, making her the El Segundo-based toy company's first Barbie with Type 1 diabetes. The doll continues Mattel's expansion of representation across its flagship brand. The Barbie Fashionistas line features more than 175 looks across various skin tones, body types and disabilities, including previous additions like a blind Barbie, a Barbie with Down syndrome and a Barbie with hearing aids. The company's commitment to representation has proved commercially successful. In 2024, the top 10 most popular Barbie Fashionista dolls globally included the blind Barbie and the Barbie with Down syndrome. Feinstein Institutes Explores Noninvasive Bioelectronic Medicine to Manage Insulin, Blood Sugar After Surgery

MANHASSET, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Scientists and engineers at Northwell Health's Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research conduct bioelectronic medicine research to treat disease and injury, and recently found that focused ultrasound (FUS) has potential to manage high blood sugar after surgery. Published recently in Bioelectronic Medicine, an open-access journal distributed by the Feinstein Institutes and BMC, part of Springer Nature, used FUS to target a bundle of nerves – including branches from the vagus nerve – that communicate with organs like the liver and pancreas, essential for regulating glucose levels. The high-frequency sound waves of FUS activate neurons in the abdomen and alter neuronal signals that regulate production of insulin and other hormones. 'Managing disorders associated with high blood sugar, including hyperglycemia after surgery, is a critical challenge and current methods often fall short,' said Stavros Zanos, MD, PhD, professor in the Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine at the Feinstein Institutes and corresponding author of the paper. 'This research explores FUS, a new method for non-invasive neuromodulation, that may offer a potential pathway towards safer and more effective blood sugar control without the use of medications.' Using animal models, researchers targeted a nerve bundle called the superior mesenteric plexus (SMP) with FUS and measured its effects on insulin sensitivity, a key factor in how the body processes sugar. They found that FUS initially improved insulin sensitivity during surgery, however, when they checked the animals' blood sugar the day after, it was unexpectedly higher in the group that received FUS compared to the group that didn't. This suggests that while FUS can have immediate positive effects on insulin sensitivity, it might interfere with the body's natural ability to manage blood sugar in the hours following the stress of surgery. Next steps in this research will optimize the FUS treatment to attain long-lasting and beneficial effects on glucose metabolism after surgery and to better understand the biological mechanisms behind these effects. 'Dr. Zanos use of focused ultrasound is paving the way for new methods to stimulate the vagus nerve,' said Kevin J. Tracey, MD, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institutes and Karches Family Distinguished Chair in Medical Research. 'Since vagus nerve reflexes control blood glucose and insulin levels, I expect these results will generate widespread interest from scientists, physicians, and future patients.' Built on years of research in molecular mechanisms of disease and the link between the nervous and immune systems, researchers at the Feinstein Institutes discovered neural targets that can be activated or inhibited with neuromodulation devices, like vagus nerve implants, to control the body's immune response and inflammation. If inflammation is successfully controlled, diseases – such as arthritis, pulmonary hypertension, Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, diabetes, cancer and autoimmune diseases – can be treated more effectively. Beyond inflammation, using novel brain-computer interfaces, Feinstein Institutes researchers developed techniques to bypass injuries of the nervous system so that people living with paralysis can regain sensation and use their limbs. By producing bioelectronic medicine knowledge, disease and injury, could one day be treated with our own nerves without costly and potentially harmful pharmaceuticals. Dr. Zanos, along with Sangeeta S.
