Lavrov: Russia understands why North Korea pursues nuclear development

NHKa day ago
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says Moscow respects North Korea's stance on pursuing nuclear development.
Lavrov met with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui in the eastern city of Wonsan on Saturday. He arrived in the city the day before.
At the start of the meeting, Lavrov expressed "sincere gratitude" to North Korean military personnel who joined the fighting against Ukraine.
The North deployed troops to the western Russian region of Kursk to fight Ukrainian forces that were staging cross-border incursions there.
Choe said Pyongyang will unconditionally support the Russian policy. Her remark referred to a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed by the two countries to mutually provide military assistance in case of contingency.
A Russian state-run news agency said Lavrov told reporters after the meeting that his country understands the reasons why North Korea is pursuing its nuclear program.
The report said Lavrov warned the United States, South Korea and Japan not to exploit their alliance as a tool to target North Korea and Russia.
The Russian top diplomat also told reporters that President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un constantly communicate with each other.
Lavrov added that arrangements are underway, and that a summit between the two leaders will certainly take place.

North Korea blasts Japan-US-South Korea joint aerial exercise

North Korea's defense ministry has lashed out at a recent joint aerial exercise staged by Japan, the United States and South Korea. The chief of the ministry's Policy Office issued a press statement through the state-run Korean Central News Agency, or KCNA, on Sunday. The statement expresses "serious concern" over what it calls the three countries' "hostile acts of persistently conducting provocative and threatening military actions." It also "strongly" warns of what it describes as "grave consequences to be entailed by them on the regional situation." The statement underscores that North Korea "will never tolerate any slightest act which exerts a negative influence on the security environment of the state." It also showed the country's readiness to take what it terms a "practical military counteraction." The trilateral exercise took place on Friday off the coast of a southern part of South Korea to deal with North Korea's nuclear and missile threats. It involved at least one US B-52 strategic bomber. The top uniformed defense officials of Japan, the US and South Korea also met in Seoul the same day. They reaffirmed cooperation to address challenges posed by North Korea.

Russia and China discuss Ukraine war and US ties

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, left, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi sit at a table in Beijing on July 13 (Russian Foreign Ministry via Reuters) MOSCOW (Reuters) -- Russia's and China's foreign ministers on Sunday discussed their relations with the United States and the prospects for ending the war in Ukraine, Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement. President Vladimir Putin's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in Beijing on Sunday. Lavrov is due to attend a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's foreign ministers in China. "The parties also discussed relations with the United States and prospects for resolving the Ukrainian crisis," the Foreign Ministry said. "The importance of strengthening close coordination between the two countries in the international arena, including in the United Nations and its Security Council, the SCO, BRICS, the G20 and APEC, was emphasized," the ministry said. China and Russia declared a "no limits" partnership in February 2022 when Putin visited Beijing, days before he sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine. Putin has sometimes described China as an "ally." The U.S. casts China as its biggest competitor and Russia as its biggest nation-state threat.

Beijing says Japan at fault for warplane nearing Japanese aircraft

A spokesperson for China's defense ministry has defended a Chinese military plane's behavior toward a Japanese aircraft in two separate cases that Japan says happened days before. The spokesperson on Sunday commented on Japan's announcement that a Chinese fighter bomber flew unusually close to an Air Self-Defense Force intelligence-gathering aircraft. Japan says the incidents took place over the high seas in the East China Sea on Wednesday and Thursday. The spokesperson said the Japanese aircraft had engaged in repeated close-in surveillance efforts in China's air defense identification zone. The spokesperson argued that the Chinese aircraft took measures to track and monitor the Japanese aircraft in accordance with the law. He explained that the Chinese response was entirely legitimate and reasonable. He added that close-in reconnaissance and harassment by Japanese vessels and aircraft are sources of maritime and air security risks between the two countries. Last month, Japan announced that a Chinese fighter jet flew abnormally close to a Maritime Self-Defense Force patrol aircraft over the Pacific Ocean on June 7 and 8. Japan expressed serious concerns to China over the June and July incidents and strongly urged it to ensure such actions do not recur. Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Malaysia on Thursday. Iwaya expressed concern over what Japan called the deteriorating situation in the seas and airspace around the country.
