Germany foils 'Iranian spy's plot to attack Israeli and Jewish community leaders'
Federal prosecutor Jens Rommel said a suspect named 'Ali S.' was arrested in Aarhus, Denmark, last week after allegedly being commissioned by a unit of Tehran's military to prepare the attacks.
The man is said to be a Danish national with Afghanistan heritage and had been scouting buildings and potential targets in the German capital - one of which included the headquarters of the German-Israeli Society.
Der Spiegel reported that the other building Ali.S had been taking photos of was where the President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Josef Schuster, often stays.
They say investigators believe that the man had been commissioned by the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, who specialise in operations outside Iran and are said to have ties to Hamas and Hezbollah.
The Quds Force were formerly headed-up by Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in 2020 by a US drone strike, and are now led by Esmail Ghaani - who was presumed dead after Israel 's strikes on Iran in June, but reports suggest he is still alive.
Mr Schuster said: 'The arrest of a suspected spy for the Iranian terror regime, who is alleged to have deliberately spied on Jewish and Israeli institutions in Germany, is a clear alarm signal.
'This successful defense must be a final signal to all those who continue to downplay the mullah regime's hatred and fantasies of annihilation against Israel and Jews around the world.'
Volker Beck, President of the German-Israeli Society, added: 'I thank the German security authorities for their vigilance.
'The fact that Iran is preparing and planning attacks against Jewish representatives and pro-Israel activists demonstrates the terrorist nature of this regime.'
Speaking on a visit to Odesa in Ukraine, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that, if confirmed, the incident 'would once again underline that Iran is a threat to Jews all over the world'.
The suspect will be brought before a judge at Germany's Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe after being extradited from Denmark, according to The Guardian.
The Iranian embassy has called the allegations 'unfounded and dangerous' and implied that it was a false narrative.
A statement from the embassy read: 'Previous discussions with relevant German authorities have already highlighted that certain third parties are attempting to divert public perceptions from the actual events through artificial staging.'
The German Foreign Office yesterday posted on X to announce they had 'summoned' the Iranian ambassador to Germany, Majid Nili Ahmadabadi, to the Federal Foreign Office.
They added: 'We will not tolerate any threats to Jewish life in Germany. The suspicion against a man in Denmark of alleged espionage on behalf of Iran must be thoroughly investigated.'
Germany has been on high alert for possible attacks against Jewish people since Hamas's assault on Israel on October 7, 2023.
In September, German police shot dead a young Austrian man known to have had ties to radical Islam as he was preparing to carry out an attack on the Israeli consulate in Munich.
Authorities have also been on alert for potential Iranian espionage activity on their soil.
A German-Iranian national was jailed in late 2023 over a plot to attack a synagogue in the western German city of Bochum in 2022.
Authorities said the plot was planned with the help of 'Iranian state agencies'.

EU is 'blocking Britain's bid to join Mediterranean trade zone' despite Keir Starmer's 'reset' with Brussels
The EU is unwilling to allow Britain to join a pan-European trade zone despite Sir Keir Starmer 's efforts to 'reset' the UK's relations with Brussels, it has emerged. The Government recently published a trade strategy that hailed membership of the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean Convention (PEM) as an 'opportunity' for the UK. Ministers said they would 'consider the benefits' of joining the PEM as part of efforts to boost British exports. The PEM allows for tariff-free trade of some goods from across dozens of countries in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. But, according to the Financial Times, the European Commission has made clear to Britain that it would not currently support UK membership of the PEM. EU officials said Brussels bosses had decided that the UK joining the PEM was not currently in the bloc's interests, the newspaper reported. The EU is said to fear it would increase the risk of products unfairly qualifying for low-tariff access to the bloc. It comes despite Sir Keir and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently striking a 'reset' deal following a UK-EU summit in London. The Government recently published a trade strategy that hailed membership of the PEM as an 'opportunity' for the UK The agreement, signed in May, covered fishing, trade, defence and energy and represented the biggest change in Britain's relations with the bloc since Brexit. Although the PEM is not exclusively an EU arrangement, trade experts said Britain would need EU co-operation to join because it would require a rewriting of the post-Brexit trade deal. Sam Lowe, trade lead at consultancy Flint Global, said: 'For it to be meaningful for the UK, the EU would need to agree to incorporate the PEM rules of origin into the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement. 'This gives the EU de facto blocking powers.' David Henig, a former UK trade negotiator now at the ECIPE think-tank, said: 'The EU isn't united on the importance of the UK reset and issues like PEM can easily be caught up in this even though technically straightforward. 'The UK Government is going to have to work hard in London and Brussels to build momentum.' Although they have left the door open to joining the PEM, the Prime Minister has repeatedly ruled out rejoining the EU's single market or customs union. A Government spokesperson said: 'This Government has secured a new agreement with the EU to support British businesses and jobs and put more money in people's pockets. 'We have also published a new Trade Strategy setting out how we will boost trade further. 'We aren't going to provide a running commentary on our ongoing discussions with the EU.'

Reform UK hires ex-Tory MP who was suspended for using racist language
Reform UK has hired a former Conservative MP who was suspended for using the N-word. Anne Marie Morris, who had the whip withdrawn by Theresa May in 2017 for using the term in a debate about Brexit, will lead Reform's social care policy. She is one of several ex-Tories who have defected to Nigel Farage's party. Morris had used the phrase '[N-word] in the woodpile' in an event at the East India Club, and apologised after the remarks came to light. She had the whip returned to her six months later – one day before a crucial Brexit vote for the then-government. At the time, Morris said: 'I would like to take this opportunity to apologise again for using such inappropriate and offensive language. It was a mistake and I regret it unreservedly.' She served for 14 years as an MP for Newton Abbot, and lost the Tory whip again in 2022 after rebelling to back a Labour move in parliament to cut VAT on energy bills. He returned after escaping from the juvenile detention centre where he was being held following the murder of his own great grandfather - and serial killer - Silas Blissett. Silas had been determined to terrorise and kill Bobby's mum Mercedes but at the last minute Bobby turned on him and pushed him onto his own fatal trap. Viewers watched as Bobby broke out of the youth prison to reunite with mum Mercedes, before Myra accidentally let slip he was out and caused the police to hunt him. He fled the village but was found by Clare Devine who spotted an opportunity to take her revenge on Mercedes - and make some money in her family business. And it's only going to get darker - but it will also mean the exit of Zachary as Bobby. A source said: 'Bobby might be a killer but he has no idea who he's dealing with with Clare. 'He thinks she's helping him but the truth is much worse and she's got plans to sell him in her sickening exploitation ring to make money. 'Zachary's stint on the show as always going to be a short stint as Bobby is caught between Clare and Mercedes. 'He's filmed his exit scenes and they are definitely going to shock. 'It's full-on Hollyoaks drama.' Hollyoaks has been contacted for comment. Later this year the Channel 4 soap will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a month-long celebration including a major stunt and a battle between two of the show's biggest villains.
