Vaibhav Suryavanshi
said he was inspired to watch
Shubman Gill
carrying on nonchalantly after making a hundred, and wants to emulate the Indian Test skipper in future matches.
Suryavanshi
made a sparkling 143 off just 78 balls to become the fastest and youngest batter to make a hundred in

during India U-19's fourth match against England on Saturday at Worcester.
"I got a lot of inspiration from him (Gill) because I saw the game. After making 100 and 200, he didn't leave the game and took the team ahead," Suryavanshi said in a video posted by BCCI on its 'X' account.

The 14-year-old was referring to Gill's twin centuries in the ongoing
Birmingham Test
where he made 269 and 161 to bury England in an avalanche of runs.
The India U-19 squad was at Edgbaston, watching Gill's construction of an epic double hundred.

"I will try to make 200 in the next match. Next time, I will try to play full fifty overs. The more I make runs, the better it will be for my team," Suryavanshi said.
"I will try to play the whole game in the next game. I will focus on that," he said.
Suryavanshi got out in the 28th over after milking 219 runs with fellow centurion Vihan Malhotra.
The left-hander said he could have batted for more overs had he shown some more caution.
"I could have batted a bit longer because I had a lot of time. After that (his dismissal), there were 20 overs left. So, I could have made it longer," Suryavanshi said.
"There was a shot (that he got out) that I couldn't give my 100%, that's why I couldn't do it," he said.
However, Suryavanshi said he was not aware of the records he created until he returned to the dressing room.
"I didn't know that I had created a record after making 100. Our team manager Ankit sir told me that I have created a record. Everyone congratulated me," he said.
"I am happy that I have done something good for the team. I will talk to my family and friends," he noted.

Competing ‘with faster athletes', Animesh breaks 100m NR in Greece

Despite a successful outing at the National Games in Dehradun early this year, Animesh Kujur wasn't a happy man. That's because he wasn't just aiming for a win there, he was also eyeing records and better timings and had pushed himself day in and day out to make sure he could do that. Although he didn't succeed then, it's finally happening. First he broke the 200m national record during the final of the Asian Athletics Championships on May 31 when he ran a time of 20.32 seconds to grab a silver medal. And now on Saturday night at the Dromia International Sprint and Relays Meeting at Konstantinos Baglatzis Municipal Stadium in Vari, Greece, he shattered the 100m national record by crossing the finishing line in 10.18 seconds. Animesh, who trains at the Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High-Performance Centre (HPC) at Kalinga Stadium, bettered Gurindervir Singh's timing of 10.20 seconds set during the Indian Grand Prix 1 at Netaji Subhas Southern Centre of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Bengaluru in March. International competition, like the one where he shone on Saturday, is what he was talking about when he said in an exclusive interview to TOI, "I have to compete with faster athletes. In India, there aren't many competitors like that. But I have the scope of training abroad and running with athletes who have timings close to 10 seconds, and that way I will be able to gauge where I stand at the moment." As far as Saturday's race is concerned, he rushed out of the blocks in the blink of an eye and continued to lead. Running in lane 4, he kept improving his pace and, despite some challenge from Sotirios Gkaragkanis of Greece, he crossed the finish line in the first position quite easily — .09 seconds faster than his earlier PB of 10.27 seconds. Gkaragkanis had to settle for second place (10.23 sec) while Samuli Samuelsson finished third (10.28 sec). With more events coming up, one expects him to run even faster in his quest to someday breach the 10-second barrier, which James Hiller, athletics director with Reliance Foundation, believes is quite possible. "I get asked a lot, can an Indian break 10 seconds? And they can," said Hiller, before adding, "It's all about how, and I think positivity will help the mindset of our sprinters genuinely believe that they can be faster, they can be better and they can, they can run under 10 seconds and ultimately that's what we need." Meanwhile, besides Animesh, Lalu Prasad Bhoi and Mrutyam Jayaram Dondapati — both from Odisha — also took part in the event and competed in another race and clocked 10.42 seconds and 10.47 seconds respectively. In another race, Manikanta Hoblidhar ran it in 10.52 seconds. Animesh will next compete in the Monaco Diamond League on July 11 where he will run the 200m in the U23 category. He will hope to lower his NR there, too, after his time of 20.27 seconds last month, during the Atleticageneve 2025 event in Switzerland, wasn't recognised as NR because of wind assistance. While individually, he has been having a hugely successful season, he has also been in brilliant form in the relays and alongwith Amlan Borgohain, Gurindervir and Manikanta, they broke the 15-year-old NR in 4x100m by clocking 38.69 seconds during the National Relay Carnival 2025 in Chandigarh in April.

India's Birmingham hero Akash Deep reveals sister's cancer diagnosis, says playing this match

Birmingham [UK], July 7 (ANI): Following his side's win over England, Indian pacer Akash Deep revealed that he played the match because he wanted to make his sister, who has been suffering from cancer for the past two months, happy. 'She will be the happiest.' Akash delivered a performance of a life-time, shutting up doubts about a Jasprit Bumrah-less Indian pace line-up with a ten-wicket haul to deliver India their first win at Edgbaston, beating England by 336 runs. 'The biggest thing is that I have not told anyone yet. My elder sister has been suffering from cancer for the last 2 months. She is stable now. She is fine. She will be the happiest. She has been going through this mentally for the last 2 months. She will be the happiest. I was playing this match for her. I have to make her happy for this match,' Akash Deep said while talking to batter Cheteshwar Pujara, now on broadcasting duties. The pacer etched his name in the record books by registering the best bowling figures in a match for India in England, surpassing the long-standing record held by Chetan Sharma. Deep's match figures of 10/187 edged past Sharma's 10/188. The Bengal speedster was in fiery rhythm throughout the Test, dismantling England's batting with a lethal combination of pace and accuracy. After picking up 4/88 in the first innings to lay the foundation, Akash Deep returned in the second innings to claim his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket, finishing with 6/99. Coming to the match, England once again opted to field first. After getting KL Rahul (2) early, a 80-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 in 107 balls, with 13 fours) and Karun Nair (31 in 50 balls, with five fours) helped India gain some footing in the match. Skipper Shubman Gill had valuable partnerships of 203 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (89 in 137 balls, with 10 fours and a six) and a 144-run stand against Washington Sundar (42 in 103 balls, with three fours and a six), helping India towards 587, scoring 269 in 387 balls himself, with 30 fours and three sixes. Shoaib Bashir (3/167) was the pick of the bowlers for England, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue also managed two each. In England's first innings, India had them on the ropes with 84/5. However, a 303-run stand between Harry Brook (158 in 234 balls, with 17 fours and a six) and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith (184* in 207 balls, with 21 fours and four sixes) sent India on an endless hunt for leather and answers. However, Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) got something out of the new ball and tumbled down the last five wickets for 20 runs, bundling them down for 407 runs, gaining a 180-run lead. India's response was a swift half-century partnership between Jaiswal (28 in 22 balls, with six fours) and KL Rahul, who also continued his good run with a 10-boundary-filled 55 in 84 balls. A 110-run stand for the fourth wicket between Rishabh Pant (65 in 58 balls, with eight fours and three sixes) and Gill upped the attack, while Gill managed yet another epic 175-run stand with Jadeja, scoring 161 in 162 balls, with 13 fours and eight sixes. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 69* in 118 balls, with five fours and a six. India declared at 427/6, leading by 607 runs and setting England a monstrous 608 runs to win. During the run-chase, England was restricted to 50/3. Jamie Smith (88 in 99, with nine fours and four sixes) was the only glimmer of hope for England as they were skittled out for just 271 runs, losing by 336 runs, thanks to a brilliant spell from Akash Deep (6/99), who ended up taking a ten-fer.
