Serbia's students, opposition rally to demand snap elections

REUTERS/Djordje Kojadinovic BELGRADE (Reuters) -Tens of thousands of students and anti-corruption protesters rallied in Belgrade on Saturday, demanding snap elections and an end to the 12-year rule of President Aleksandar Vucic. Police deployed scores of officers in riot gear around government buildings, parliament and nearby Pionirski Park, where throngs of Vucic's backers from across the country gathered in a counter-protest. Months of protests across the country, including university shutdowns, have rattled Vucic, a populist, whose second term ends in 2027, when there are also parliamentary elections scheduled. Vucic's opponents accuse him and his allies of ties to organised crime, violence against rivals and curbing media freedoms, something they deny. The student protest is set to last until 9 p.m. (1900 GMT) at Slavija Square and Nemanjina Avenue, where most of the government offices are located. The protesters, who want the government to heed their demands by the end of the protest, have pledged non-violence. Vucic has previously refused snap elections. His Progressive Party-led coalition holds 156 of 250 parliamentary seats. On Saturday, Vucic said unspecified "foreign powers" were behind the protest. He said police should be restrained, but warned that violence will not be tolerated. 'The country will be defended, and thugs will face justice,' he told reporters in Belgrade. Sladjana Lojanovic, 37, a farmer from the town of Sid in the north, said she came to support students. "The institutions have been usurped and ... there is a lot of corruption. Elections are the solution, but I don't think he (Vucic) will want to go peacefully," she told Reuters. In the days ahead of the protest, police arrested about a dozen anti-government activists, charging them with undermining the constitution and terrorism. All denied the charges. Protests by students, opposition, teachers, workers and farmers began last December after 16 people died on November 1 in a Novi Sad railway station roof collapse. Protesters blame corruption for the disaster. The Belgrade rally coincides with St. Vitus Day, venerated by most Serbs, which marks the 1389 Battle of Kosovo with Ottoman Turks. Philippine prosecutors ask Senate to proceed with Duterte trial; case must go on due to severity of charges
Philippine Vice-President Sara Duterte is facing removal from her post and a lifetime ban from office if convicted. -- PHOTO: REUTERS MANILA (Bloomberg): Prosecutors at the Philippines' House of Representatives asked the Senate to proceed with Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial, saying she should be convicted and barred from politics. Duterte this week asked the Senate, which sits as the impeachment court, to throw out her case, saying the House violated the constitutional ban on initiating impeachment proceedings against the same official more than once within a year. Prosecutors said Duterte's arguments were "baseless' and that her only legal strategy is "to have the case dismissed and avoid trial,' according to a copy of their official response sent to the Senate on Friday. They asked the Senate to convict Duterte, remove her from office and "order her perpetual disqualification from holding any public office.' The vice president is facing charges that include misusing public funds and plotting to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. after their alliance collapsed. She has denied the allegations. At least two-thirds of the 24-member Senate needs to vote to convict Duterte, a top contender for the 2028 presidential election, when Marcos must step down after a constitutionally limited six-year term. "No bloodbath is necessary. Let the trial begin,' the prosecutors said. -- ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.

Car bombing kills 13 Pakistani soldiers near Afghan border, say sources
ISLAMABAD: An explosive-laden car rammed into a Pakistani military convoy today in a town near the Afghan border, killing at least 13 soldiers, sources said. Four Pakistani intelligence officials and a senior local administrator said the convoy was attacked in Mir Ali area of North Waziristan district. Around 10 other soldiers were wounded, some critically, and they were being airlifted to a military hospital, the sources said. "It was huge, a big bang," said the local administrator, adding that residents of the town could see a large amount of smoke billowing from the scene from a great distance. One resident said that the explosion rattled the windowpanes of nearby houses, and caused some roofs to collapse. No one has so far claimed responsibility. The Pakistani military did not respond to a Reuters request for a comment. The lawless district which sits next to Afghanistan has long served as a safe haven for different Islamist groups, who operate on both sides of the border. Islamabad says the fighters run training camps in Afghanistan to launch attacks inside Pakistan, a charge Kabul denies. Pakistani Taliban also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, an umbrella group of several Islamist groups, has long been waging a war against Pakistan in a bid to overthrow the government and replace it with its own Islamic system of governance. The Pakistani military, which has launched several offensives against the militants, has mostly been their prime target.
