Tesla supplier CATL has potential beyond just batteries, analysts say

CNBC3 days ago
For Tesla supplier Contemporary Amperex Technology , selling battery packs to major electric companies is just the start of its ambitions. "We believe the company is not just a hardware manufacturer, but it will also be a software ecosystem provider," Morgan Stanley analysts led by Jack Lu said in a report Wednesday. They pointed to CATL's artificial intelligence-powered tools for monitoring batteries on the road and giving early safety warnings. "As AI develops, the ecosystem will likely further evolve and provide more value added soft services to customers," the Morgan Stanley analysts said, noting that improved safety will also strengthen CATL's business partnerships and competitiveness. Morgan Stanley raised its price target on CATL's Hong Kong-listed shares to 445 Hong Kong dollars ($56.69), up 14% from 390 HKD previously. The new price target is nearly 18% above where CATL closed Friday, after reaching an intraday high of 395 HKD on Thursday. That was the highest since CATL shares listed in Hong Kong on May 20 in the world's biggest IPO of 2025. The company's mainland-listed shares have traded at an abnormally large discount to the Hong Kong shares. CATL also looks to be a step closer to generating revenue from licensing. Ford agreement U.S. automaker Ford has planned to open a battery factory through a licensing agreement with CATL. But the deal came under intense U.S. scrutiny , while there were concerns that Ford would lose advanced manufacturing tax credits. But Ford in the last week said it expects its BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan will benefit from such tax credits, and " remains on track to begin production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in 2026." While the release did not mention CATL, analysts were hopeful. "This recent news is positive in that it appears there is tacit acceptance of the licensing arrangement," Macquarie analysts Eugene Hsiao and Fergus Kwan said in a report Wednesday, noting the development "helps to remove one key headwind on the shares." Neither CATL nor Ford immediately responded to a CNBC request for comment. CATL could receive 1.3 billion yuan ($181 million) in annual licensing fees if BlueOval operates near full capacity by 2027, although the battery company's profits won't likely benefit until then, the Macquarie analysts said. They have a price target of 360 HKD on CATL shares. U.S. scrutiny But CATL remains under broader scrutiny in the U.S. Earlier this year, the Pentagon added CATL to a "Chinese military" list that prohibits the U.S. Department of Defense from buying the company's products starting in 2026. CATL at the time said the designation was "a mistake" and that it "is not engaged in any military-related activities." "We believe geopolitical risk between China and the U.S. is already priced into the shares," the Macquarie analysts said. "Strong earnings fundamentals from market share gains in Europe, coinciding with increased shareholder returns, should lead to a valuation re-rating." CATL has pledged 90% of the funds raised by going public would support its expansion into Europe , especially a factory in Hungary that's nearing completion. The company last month also said a subsidiary has reached a deal in Indonesia for a $6 billion project that aims to cover nickel mining and processing, battery production and battery recycling. "We maintain our Buy rating for CATL," Bank of America analysts led by Ming Hsun Lee said in a July 2 report, "given its industry-leading battery technology and new product strategy to protect its market share, as well as its edge in technology and scale to drive more room for cost savings and sustained high" gross profit margins. The analysts have a 400 HKD price target on the stock. They highlighted that, in CATL's main line of business, Xiaomi will use the CATL's battery in its popular YU7 SUV, "which should be positive to CATL's [market] share in China." CATL has also built business partnerships in new technologies around battery swapping and packs designed specifically for hybrid-powered cars . Geely -backed electric car company Zeekr on Wednesday announced its hybrid driving system is based on CATL's "Freevoy Super Hybrid Battery." The technology will be used in Zeekr's first hybrid vehicle, the 9X SUV, which has a range of 380 kilometers on a single charge and is set to begin deliveries in China by the end of September, a statement said. — CNBC's Michael Bloom contributed to this report.

Xi Jinping is losing his grip on China— and Trump can give him a push

Xi Jinping's once-total control of the Chinese military and the Chinese Communist Party is looking increasingly shaky — and President Donald Trump has a chance to help hasten the dictator's departure. Last month I explained in these pages why Xi, China's 'Chairman of Everything' since 2012, might soon be out of power. Critics scoffed — but on July 2 Beijing announced that Xi, for the first time, would miss this year's BRICS Summit in Brazil. Xi had long used the annual BRICS meeting as a domestic showpiece for his international leadership, with every Chinese press organ reporting on his summit speeches and activities in multiple front-page stories. The blanket coverage strengthened Xi's perceived power at home, so the chance that he volunteered to miss this year's BRICS Summit is next to none. Furthermore, Xi's wife Peng Liyuan has not been seen in public for more than two months, and Ma Xingrui, one of Xi's closest senior allies, was recently 'assigned to another post,' according to state media — that is, removed from his position as Xinjiang Party Secretary. Both added to a chain of senior Xi loyalists being deposed or dying mysteriously in recent months. Dictators, like dictatorships, frequently appear unbreakable until they break. The CIA infamously projected the USSR would hold firm for decades just months before its demise. The signs were there, but after 70 years of the Soviet Union's survival, even expert analysts were hesitant to predict its imminent collapse. Like the Soviet Politburo in the 1980s, the CCP's ruling elite now faces severe economic challenges. A flagging economy, huge outflows of capital, unemployment rates in depression territory and completely unsustainable public and private debt levels are driving deep unrest and even public protests in various regions of China. If a critical mass of CCP leaders believes their nation cannot afford any more upheaval, they may well be orchestrating a smooth exit for Xi to avoid a messy coup. Xi, of course, is resisting his political departure — one more reason why Trump must keep up his economic pressure on China. Trump's tariffs have helped push the Chinese economy into truly dire straits, weakening Xi while upping the odds that his replacement will be more favorable toward US interests. Xi's disastrous economic, domestic and foreign-policy mistakes of the past few years make it likely that his successor will embrace a governance approach favoring collective leadership and reform, say political insiders in Beijing. They point to the model of Deng Xiaoping, who followed a similar pattern when cleaning up the many disasters left to him by Mao Zedong. A change in Chinese leadership could be an unalloyed benefit to the United States and our democratic allies worldwide — given that China today is by far the largest dual-use technology provider to Putin's war machine in Ukraine, the largest supporter of terrorist governments in Asia and the greatest global thief of US intellectual property. There's little the United States can or should do directly to push Xi out of power — but Trump certainly can encourage positive change in China with several concrete actions. First, he should get behind the Russian sanctions bill now pending in the Senate and sign it into law — and follow up on his threat to impose 100% 'secondary tariffs' on China and other countries that buy Russian energy. Both measures would force China to choose between supporting Putin's Ukraine slaughter, or leaving Russia to its failed war and rejoining the civilized nations of our world. Continuing to partner with Putin in the face of such crippling sanctions would be economic suicide for China, and the absolute end of Xi's regime. In addition, Trump must escalate the fight against Chinese spies and industrial espionage in the United States and partner nations. It's no accident that so many of China's newest weapons look and function exactly like their Western counterparts. Finally, Trump should send clear signals that the United States will welcome new Chinese leadership committed to a peaceful foreign policy, the rule of law and more personal and economic freedoms for its people. The president loves social media, and so do the Chinese people. China's 'Great Fire Wall' dramatically limits their access to all but CCP-sponsored information — but it's not foolproof. Powerful Truth Social posts, emphasizing Trump's deep respect for China's people while highlighting Xi's many failures, in combination with a concerted 'all channels' communications effort, will get through to the CCP elite and to well-educated future leaders. With each week, the signs grow clearer: The Xi Jinping era is coming to an end. The United States and our Western allies must prepare for the changes to come in the world's second-largest economy — which now undergirds our biggest global adversaries. Gregory W. Ford recalls more than 694,000 Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs over fuel leak risk

Ford is recalling 694,271 Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs because of a faulty fuel injector in the vehicles that can leaks, raising the risk of a fire, according to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall involves certain 2021-2024 Bronco Sport and 2020-2022 Escape vehicles equipped with 1.5L engines. "A fuel injector may crack and leak fuel inside the engine compartment," the recall notice states. Ford said it is considering possible long-term remedies. In the meantime, dealers will update the engine control software of affected vehicles as an interim safety measure. The update will be free of charge, according to the automaker. While not a permanent fix, the updated software will "allow for the detection of a cracked fuel injector and invokes a strategy to disable the high-pressure fuel pump, derate engine power output and reduce temperatures of possible ignition sources in the engine compartment," Ford stated in previous recall documents relating to the problem. Notification letters will be mailed to owners on Aug. 18, who will also be alerted when a permanent fix is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. The number for this recall is 25S76. Affected vehicle owners can also contact the NHTSA safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-888-275-9171), or go to NHTSA's number for the recall is 25V-467. The recall "expands and replaces" previous NHTSA recall numbers 22V-859 (Nov. 18, 2022), 24V-187 (March 8, 2024), and 25V-165 (March 14, 2025). "Vehicles previously remedied under 22V-859, 24V-187 and 25V-165 will need to have the new final remedy performed once it is available," the regulator said. Ford has announced 90 vehicle recalls this year, impacting a total of more than 5 million vehicles, according to the federal agency's recall records. The Dearborn, Michigan manufacturer recalled more than 850,00 vehicles last week over faulty fuel pumps. Over the past six months, Ford has issued more safety recalls than any automaker has issued in an entire year, according to the Wall Street Journal.
