LONDON - The Tower of London was adorned with a flood of ceramic poppies as part of Britain's commemorations for the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, in a display which was visited by Britain's Queen Camilla on Tuesday.
Poppies, the symbol of remembrance in Britain, were installed in their thousands to form a bright red cascade flowing from one corner of the 950-year-old White Tower onto the grass below.
"They become a metaphor for the spilled blood of all those who died in the war," designer Tom Piper said.
The government has planned a series of events in the run-up to the anniversary of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender, which took effect on May 8, 1945.
Camilla visited the display, "planted" a poppy and met staff there.
On Monday, she joined her husband King Charles, heir to the throne Prince William and his family, along with veterans and crowds to watch a military parade and flypast outside Buckingham Palace.
The new commemorative display of 30,000 ceramic poppies follows a previous installation in 2014 which remembered lives lost during World War One. Named "Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red", it was visited by the late Queen Elizabeth.
The Tower of London, located on the north bank of the River Thames, is a Norman fortress which, like many parts of London, was bombed during World War Two.
The poppies, which were made by artist Paul Cummins, will be on display until November 11. REUTERS

McLaren boss offers actor Brad Pitt a second chance to hit 322kmh

LONDON - Brad Pitt's F1 movie is topping the box office charts worldwide but the Hollywood A-lister is not done with Formula One, or racing. Like his fictional big screen character Sonny Hayes, Pitt has been offered a second chance to don race overalls and lap at 322kmh. McLaren F1 chief executive Zak Brown told Reuters on July 2 that Pitt had a standing offer to 'come out and play' – and expected the 61-year-old not only to take him up on it but also take his passion for racing further. Pitt drove a Formula One car for the first time with McLaren at Austin's Circuit of the Americas in June, after driving F2 cars disguised as F1 cars for the movie, and has been raving about the experience ever since. He did have one regret, however. 'Ask me how fast I went. Three mph short of 200mph (322kmh),' Pitt said, at the New York premiere. 'I want to go back. I want to hit 200.' Brown indicated that it could be arranged. 'He did a great job, he can drive a race car,' he said, at a McLaren event for the team's army of fans in London's Trafalgar Square, with title-chasing drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. 'I've traded notes with him, it was the time of his life. I feel like he's a racer now, so anytime he wants to come out and play he's more than welcome to. And that's a standing offer.' McLaren boss Zak Brown was speaking at a team event for fans in London's Trafalgar Square on July 2. PHOTO: REUTERS When asked if he expected Pitt to take him up on it, Brown replied: 'I wouldn't be surprised looking at the level of enthusiasm that he had. I sent him his data, he wanted to understand and learn. So yeah, I bet he will.' 'I wouldn't be surprised if one day you saw Brad Pitt racing some sort of sports car,' said Brown. 'Paul Newman always used to say he was a racing driver, and an actor in his spare time. "He (Pitt) is clearly in good physical shape. He had no physical limitations." Pitt would not be the first Hollywood heartthrob to go racing for real. What's next for Sean 'Diddy' Combs after his sex trafficking trial?

REUTERS/Jane Rosenberg NEW YORK - Sean "Diddy" Combs was found guilty on Wednesday of prostitution-related offenses but cleared of more serious charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. Combs, 55, had pleaded not guilty to all five felony counts he faced. Here's what's expected to come next in the case: COMBS' LAWYER ASKS FOR BAIL After the jury read its verdict, defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo asked Subramanian to release Combs on bail, which prosecutors opposed. The judge asked lawyers for both sides to submit written arguments on whether he should release Combs by 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT). SENTENCING Combs faces a maximum 10-year prison sentence on each of the two prostitution counts. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian will determine Combs' sentence at a later date. Before Combs is sentenced, prosecutors and defense lawyers will file written arguments advocating for the sentence they believe Combs deserves. APPEAL After Combs' sentencing, his lawyers may file an appeal of both his conviction and his sentence. To succeed on appeal, the defense faces the high burden of convincing the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that Subramanian made legal errors that impacted the jury's verdict. Any appeal may take years to play out. For example, the 2nd Circuit upheld the sex trafficking conviction and 20-year prison sentence of British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell on September 17, 2024, nearly three years after her conviction. CIVIL LAWSUITS Rhythm and blues singer Casandra "Cassie" Ventura, a star prosecution witness, sued Combs in November 2023 for sex trafficking, the first of dozens of civil lawsuits accusing him of abuse. Combs settled with Ventura for $20 million. He has denied all wrongdoing. REUTERS
