Islamic State claims responsibility for attack on east Congo church
The Islamic State militant group on Monday claimed responsibility for a deadly attack that a U.N. mission said had killed at least 43 worshippers during a night mass at a church in eastern Congo.
At dawn on Sunday, Islamic State-allied rebels stormed the church in Komanda, a village located around 75 kilometers from Ituri's provincial capital Bunia, killing people with guns and machetes and taking captives.
Islamic State said on its Telegram channel that rebels had killed some 45 churchgoers and burned dozens of homes and shops.
The U.N. mission known as MONUSCO said at least 43 people had been killed, including 19 women and nine children, while condemning the attack carried out by the Islamic State-affiliated Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).
The ADF originates in neighbouring Uganda, but is now based in mineral-rich eastern Congo. It mounts frequent attacks, further destabilising a region where many militant groups compete for influence and resources.
Pope Leo on Monday sent a message of condolences to the bereaved families and the Christian community who lost their relatives and friends in the assault, saying he would pray for them. REUTERS

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russia struck civilian infrastructure in Lozova with more than 25 drones, damaging a depot and a station. Ukraine's air force downed 29 of 46 drones launched by Russia across the country overnight, according to its statement on Telegram. One ballistic missile and 17 drones struck various locations, it said. Reuters could not independently verify the reports of casualties and damage. There was no immediate comment from Russia. Ukraine's drone attack sparks fires in Rostov region, Russia says

There were no injuries as a result of the attack and the fire at the substation on an area of about 500 square metres (5,400 square feet) has been extinguished, Rostov's acting governor, Yuri Slyusar, said on the Telegram messaging app. Russia's defence units destroyed a total of 24 Ukrainian drones overnight, including seven over the Rostov region, which has been a frequent target of Ukraine's strikes, Russia's defence ministry said on Telegram. The ministry reports only the number of downed drones, not how many Ukraine launched. Reuters could not independently verify the reports, and there was no immediate comment from Kyiv.
