Skill-entrepreneurship university in pipeline in Kerala

KOCHI: For a state with a huge talent pool, skills gap often plays spoilsport in Kerala students getting placed in top companies. That, however, could become a thing of the past as the state government is planning to set up a Skill and Entrepreneurship University. Chances are the university will become a reality this financial year. 'We are studying the models being followed by various skill universities in the country,' Industries Minister P Rajeeve told TNIE.
'In the case of the Skill University in Telangana, the institution comes under the industries department. We are yet to make a decision in this regard.'
He said the university is being planned in the Public Private Participation (PPP) model.
'It may have a governing board comprising leading industrialists and technocrats. They are the ones who know what the industries need,' the minister said.
As to who will lead the governing body, and where the university will come up, the decision is yet to be arrived at. In Telangana, the institution is headed by the chief minister, he pointed out. 'We are studying the skill universities in Gujarat, Maharashtra and some other states,' Rajeeve said. According to the university concept, companies will formulate course modules.
'Each industry needs skills of its own. So, it is apt that the courses be developed by them as per their requirement. Once the students get trained in these skills, provisions will also be there for them to be placed with these companies,' the minister said. And it is just not skills the institution will develop.
'Entrepreneurship will also be promoted at the university. Once students have the requisite skills, they can easily start a venture of their own and provide employment to others,' Rajeeve said. Welcoming the development, Group of Technology Companies (GTech) secretary Sreekumar V said, 'This is the need of the hour.
It is something that we have been demanding for a long time. We want students to acquire hands-on training. Many agencies are conducting courses. However, those are just classroom training. That's not what the industries want. They want proof of work. Something which shows them that their prospective employee has learnt the skill and has it too.'

No action on bad road: Bengaluru residents offer puja in protest

BENGALURU: Fed up with the pathetic condition of the road in their area, residents of Holiday Village Road planned a Gana Homa (fire ritual) at Sri Venkateshwara Temple on Sunday to highlight the road's poor condition. Since protests are restricted to Freedom Park, residents chose this symbolic route, but the event was blocked at the last minute, allegedly due to external pressure. However, they still conducted a puja on a smaller scale on Sunday. 'We had scheduled the homa for Sunday at Venkateshwara Temple on HV Road but we received a call two days ago from the priest saying that he received directions not to conduct the ritual in the temple,' Manish Shukla, a resident, told TNIE, suspecting political pressure to stop the demonstration. The residents said the road in question -- a 2.3-km stretch that is a vital connector to the main road, schools, colleges, and housing communities -- has been dug up multiple times for pipeline work but has never been restored properly. Whitetopping for the road was announced six months ago and has seen little progress due to inefficient contractors and inadequate monitoring. Over 15,000 residents of HV Road have been demanding urgent action from civic authorities. Although the area was officially brought under Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike in 2021, it remains plagued by poor infrastructure and neglected maintenance, they alleged. The residents have issued a public appeal demanding swift road restoration, transparent communication, contractor accountability, and the right to peaceful protests locally.

PM Modi lauds PV Narasimha Rao's role in India's economic development

HYDERABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday recalled the contributions made by former prime minister PV Narasimha Rao on the occasion of his 104th birth anniversary. 'As the prime minister, he steered the nation through a severe economic crisis. Adopting a pragmatic approach, he played a pivotal role in advancing India's economy and laying the foundations for growth and prosperity. His fluency in several languages, coupled with his academic knowledge and scholastic pursuits, was noteworthy. Enjoying acceptance across the political spectrum, he was also admired by one and all,' Prime Minister Modi said in a message to the former premier's family. Meanwhile, grand celebrations were organised at the PV Gyan Bhoomi to mark the birth anniversary of Narasimha Rao. Deputy Chief minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, BJP MPs Dr K Laxman, DK Aruna, Eatela Rajender, among several others paid tributes at the former PM's memorial. Bhatti Vikramarka stated that Narasimha Rao was a social reformer who laid the foundations for an egalitarian society by implementing land reforms in the state as chief minister, following the initiatives of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. 'It is a matter of great pride that the former prime minister, Bharat Ratna awardee, and architect of economic reforms was born in our state,' Vikramarka said. Speaking to TNIE, PV Narasimha Rao's grandson and senior BJP leader N V Subhash said that his grandfather was a true statesman. He said that although the Congress wanted to reduce his grandfather to the level of a state leader, Prime Minister Modi honoured him with the Bharat Ratna. He said that his grandfather never craved for any political identity, and proved that a person from the middle class could also become chief minister and prime minister in this country.

NEW DELHI: Over the past 18 months, security forces have achieved significant success in anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh, neutralising 435 Maoists, including a record 48 women operatives, officials said on Saturday.
