Nearly 16.5-foot cayenne pepper plant might be world's tallest
Henry Pope, the lead grower and plant geneticist for Mississippi Foundation for Renewable Energy, said he spent seven years cross-pollinating specific pepper plants with an aim toward creating a variety of plant ideal for vertical gardening.
"Opportunity for creating a world record of any kind was never the goal," Pope told the Clarion-Ledger newspaper. "The goal was the same as it always is for us, to produce a natural variety of edible plant that is beneficial to those who wish to become less reliant on the grocery store."
The current record was set in 1999, when California woman Laura Liang's plant grew to be 16 feet tall.
Pope had a team of measurement specialists, plant experts and local officials measure his cayenne for an official application to Guinness World Records. His cayenne was measured at about 16 feet and 5.5 inches tall.
The record-keeping organization must now review evidence from the measuring before the record becomes official.

NASA issues challenge for public design of ejection system

The space organization is offering a challenge for those who think they can solve a capability gap in its Stratospheric Projectile Entry Experiment on Dynamics (SPEED), a two-stage stratospheric drop test architecture. SPEED is under development to bridge the state-of-the-art gap that many NASA flagship missions need to reduce system risk and allow more optimized designs via margin reduction, a NASA press release said. "As current ejection system designs are conceptual, complex and untested, NASA is looking for alternative ideas that can be incorporated into the design of their next iteration of SPEED flight vehicles to increase system reliability," NASA said in a statement. "We are challenging the public to design innovative concepts for a separation mechanism that can be used to assess NASA and commercial re-entry vehicle stability." The winnings: $7,000 in total prizes, including $3,000 for first place. "A successful outcome of this contest is a credible 3D model of a separation mechanism that is both cost-effective by utilizing easy-to-manufacture methods (such as 3D printing or laser/water jet cutting) and Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) parts and doesn't rely on high-energy systems like explosives," GrabCAD reported. SpaceX launch adds dozens of satellites to Amazon's broadband network
July 16 (UPI) -- Amazon's Project Kuiper broadband network got a literal boost from SpaceX Wednesday as a Falcon 9 rocket put several Kuiper satellites into orbit. The mission, titled KF-01, involved a Falcon 9 that launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. EDT, and carried 24 Kuiper craft into low Earth orbit at an altitude of 289 miles. "Congrats to the amazing [Project Kuiper] team on another successful launch and thank you to [SpaceX] for the ride to space," posted Amazon's devices chief Panos Panay to X Wednesday. "Pumped to have another batch of Kuiper satellites heading into orbit!" The Falcon 9's first stage then returned to Earth about nine minutes later, landing on SpaceX's "A Shortfall of Gravitas" droneship located in the Atlantic Ocean. Marking the third launch of Kuiper satellites, this mission expanded Amazon's broadband network to a current count of 78 but is slated to eventually be comprised of over 3,200 satellites, which will require more than 80 launches before reaching that goal.
