Isak odds: Where will the Newcastle striker be next season?

Isak odds: Where will the Newcastle striker be next season?

Metro4 days ago
Leaving goals in Newcastle when your star striker is needed to gain sharpness by playing in a pre-season friendly at Celtic was a baffling decision by Magpies manager Eddie Howe.
It is understandable he didn't want Alexander Isak to be the centre of post-match speculation if he had played in the defeat to the Scottish champions at Parkhead but the move has raised red flags in a city which bleeds black and white as it has renewed speculation he could be sold.
Liverpool have been linked, Saudi Arabia has been mentioned and Arsenal are lurking in the shadows as they are still trying to sign the striker needed to transform them from perennial Premier League runners-up into a side capable of winning the title for the first time in more than two decades.
And who would really be shocked if Chelsea conjured up the finances to secure the Sweden international's services over a lengthy period ranging from between six to eight years?
Bayern Munich could also be interested along with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain as the Tyneside terror is one of the best finishers on the planet, having scored 54 Premier League goals in three years at the St James' Park club.
Despite agreeing to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike for £69million, the Reds are in need of more firepower if they are to retain the title following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz's desire to move on and Arne Slot's willingness to allow Darwin Nunez to join another club.
The trouble for all potential purchasers is Newcastle need back up for Isak rather than scurrying around trying to find a replacement. They have failed in attempts to sign Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who have both joined Manchester United and missed out on Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, who have swelled Chelsea's ranks.
Missing those targets mean Newcastle are highly unlikely to allow the jewel in their crown to depart, which would leave them desperately short of goals ahead of a new season which sees them back in the Champions League.
Newcastle have insisted Isak is not for sale and even if they were forced to let him go because his head has been turned they would regard £150m as the bare minimum for an elite scorer who supplied 23 goals and six assists in the top-flight last term, while also bagging the decisive strike in the 2-1 Carabao Cup final success over Liverpool at Wembley.
If Isak were to leave then the 4/1 with BetMGM and Unibet he heads to Anfield is a decent price but big-hitters should smash into the 1/3 with bet365 that he's still a Newcastle player when the transfer window closes. The Magpies simply cannot allow a rival club to steal him from their grasp.
Johnny Rotten appears at the Rebellion Festival in Blackpool next month but the Sex Pistols singer will struggle to match the same filth and fury seen in the explosive ruckus between Gerwyn Price and Daryl Gurney in their heated World Matchplay encounter in the Winter Gardens on Monday.
The darts duo are not the best of friends – security had to separate them after a Premier League match in Sheffield six years ago – and were involved in a heated exchange after Price's 10-7 first-round triumph when 'Super Chin' appeared to mock the Iceman's energetic victory celebrations, having earlier mouthed an apparent obscenity as he headed for a break in play. Price faces Chris Dobey in the second round and is 10/11 with William Hill, bet365, Betway Betfred and BoyleSports to win by over 2.5 legs while new kid on the block Josh Rock can take the scalp of three-time World Matchplay champion Michael van Gerwen at 8/13 with Hills.
The eagerly awaited rematch between Jan Brueghel and Calandagan takes place at Ascot on Saturday in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the former horse, trained by Aidan O'Brien, can repeat his half-length victory when winning the Coronation Cup at Epsom at the start of June at 2/1 with William Hill.

Arne Slot leaves Luis Diaz out of AC Milan friendly due to ongoing speculation

Bayern Munich are understood to have reopened dialogue with the Premier League champions, having had an initial offer of 67.5million euros (£59m) dismissed last week. Liverpool have maintained they do not want to sell the forward – who has also attracted interest from Barcelona – and the Bundesliga champions' bid was way below their own valuation of 100m euro (£87m) for an elite forward in the global market. Diaz turns 29 in January and has two years left on his current deal but has not yet had an offer of a new contract. 'In Lucho's (Diaz's) situation, there's a lot of rumours around him lately and I cannot go into that,' said Slot. 'He's training really well with us but we have decided for now not to play him yet. 'I'm used to talking to most of my players on a regular basis. I cannot comment much more about that.' Joe Gomez has departed Liverpool's pre-season tour of Asia due to injury, Arne Slot has confirmed. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 26, 2025 Asked whether Diaz wanted to leave, Slot added: 'That is not the person to ask, me.' Striker Darwin Nunez, whose own future appears to lie away from Anfield, and midfielder Wataru Endo missed the game with minor fitness issues. Club-record signing Florian Wirtz made his first start as a false nine, with latest signing Hugo Ekitike left out of the squad, having only arrived on Thursday after completing his arrival in a £79m deal on Wednesday. Slot played two different starting XIs in each half, with midfielder Ryan Gravenberch and left-back Kostas Tsimikas both required to fill a centre-back role after Joe Gomez returned home for treatment on an Achilles injury. 'We thought it was better to assess it back in England and for him to work on him to come back to the team, probably in more ideal circumstances for him,' added Slot, who denied Gomez's absence left him dangerously-short in the position after selling Jarrell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. 'I don't think we have a concern at centre-back. I think Ryan (Gravenberch) showed today that he can play in that position. He did it last season as well. 'Although we all know we favour him as a number six, Wata (Endo) can play there. Joe Gomez only has a minor injury, he has been good for us last season as well. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 26, 2025 'We have enough options left but it's true that Jarell Quansah left and we haven't replaced him yet.' Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo scored the goals for Liverpool, who paid tribute to forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva after their deaths in a car crash earlier this month. Players wore shirts bearing a logo with the Portugal international's name and number and a heart, and Sir Kenny Dalglish laid a wreath in front of supporters who held up a DJ 20 mosaic.

Irked Russell Martin's six word message to Rangers team made something crystal clear before game even started

The new Ibrox boss was left unimpressed with a number of players after handing out chances to stake claim Russell Martin finished the game watching from the stands. ‌ And he warned his sloppy fringe men they'd better buck up their ideas if they want to avoid spending the rest of the season there too. ‌ The new Ibrox boss was unimpressed with a number of players he handed a big chance to stake their claim in the 2-2 friendly draw with Middlesbrough - revealing he spotted signs they weren't up for the fight in the WARM-UP. ‌ After throwing on the cavalry with half an hour remaining to salvage a draw, Martin admitted the lack of depth to his squad was obvious. Goals from Danilo and Findlay Curtis rescued a draw after Neto Borges and Dael Fry had Boro two ahead. Martin was then sent off at the interval for protesting over the non-award of a penalty too hard. ‌ But having made 11 changes to the side that started Tuesday's 2-0 Champions League qualifying first leg victory over Panathinaikos, it was the application of some of his second string which had him seeing red at full time. Oscar Cortes and Josh Gentles were singled out for praise. But Martin said: 'A lot of the moments that were uncomfortable for us were down to a lack of intensity on our part. ‌ 'And I said to the guys - I didn't like the warm up. "There's a bit of disappointment in a few people, maybe not in the team and that stuff. "But if you're disappointed, and especially playing for this football club, you have to show it in being more aggressive, more intense, not being downbeat and sort of just being out there and letting the game pass you by a little bit. ‌ 'So they know that now. That can't happen. It can't be a problem for us. 'Whenever you step on the pitch for this club and this team, you have to be all in. 'So that was a good lesson for a couple. And the rest I'm really pleased with, and we're better than we were before the game for sure. ‌ 'I think we're learning about people all the time. And every situation is different. Every person as a player, but as a person, is different. 'There was just a little bit too much in the first half that I didn't really like and there were some good moments in the first half. 'But I think the thing to take is, when you're not playing or not in the starting 11 right now then we're at the start of a very, very long season and we are going to need everyone. I've told them that. ‌ 'But you need to be a bit more like Oscar, run really hard. 'Maybe his end product wasn't quite there today because he hasn't played too much, but effort, endeavour, willingness to run, to help your mate, fantastic. Josh Gentles the same. 'That's where you need to be when you if you want to be part of this in the long term.' ‌ Martin fired the warning to his players two days before the fly out to Greece for Wednesday's crucial qualifier. A 2-0 first leg win at Ibrox has given Rangers a cushion ahead of what's expected to be an intense evening in Athens Olympic Stadium. ‌ And he reckons the sluggish start was a timely reminder of the levels and intensity that will be required if they are to see off Panathinaikos and keep their £40m Champions League dream alive. He said: 'If we were in a difficult situation, it's down to us, a lack of intensity, not being in the right position quickly enough. So I think that's the lesson. 'If you're not going to play with enough intensity or enough speed or enough aggression, then you will be put into difficult situations way more than you are if you want to bring all of those to the party. ‌ 'So, especially early on in the game when a team has energy and they're fresh and they have a really good organized press and they have a good coach. 'We knew it'd be difficult for the guys. I don't think we expected anything less. But be difficult on our terms. 'If we're running, being aggressive, playing with intensity, and it's still difficult, then we can look at it and try and fix it. But don't be difficult on someone else's terms.' ‌ Curtis followed up his wonderstrike that opened the scoring against the Greeks on Tuesday night with another Ibrox strike to seal the draw with 11 minutes remaining. This time it was all about awareness as he pounced to bury the loose ball after Nico Raskin's header was saved. And Martin said: 'He showed good instinct today. He got better on Tuesday as the game went on and he showed some good stuff today, some good timing, some good bits. 'So, just a really good learner. And I thought Nico was brilliant next to him today as well. 'The best Nico's played since we've been here, so I'm really pleased with Nico's contribution because I think having Max Aarons and Nico on your side of the pitch will definitely help Findlay. 'And he just needs to keep listening, keep learning. Good instinct today, good character, good attitude. As long as he keeps doing that, he'll be fine.'
