CALIFORNIA: Meta Platforms Inc is in talks to make a multi-billion-dollar investment into artificial intelligence (AI) startup Scale AI, according to sources.
The financing could exceed US$10bil in value, some of the people said, making it one of the largest private company funding events of all time.
The terms of the deal are not finalised and could still change, according to sources, who asked not to be identified discussing private information.
A representative for Scale did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Meta declined to comment.
Scale AI, whose customers include Microsoft Corp and OpenAI, provides data labelling services to help companies train machine-learning models and has become a key beneficiary of the generative AI boom.
The startup was last valued at about US$14bil in 2024, in a funding round that included backing from Meta and Microsoft.
Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Scale was in talks for a tender offer that would value it at US$25bil.
This would be Meta's biggest ever external AI investment and a rare move for the company.
The social media giant has before now mostly depended on its in-house research, plus a more open development strategy, to make improvements in its AI technology.
Meanwhile, Big Tech peers have invested heavily: Microsoft has put more than US$13bil into OpenAI, while both Amazon.com Inc and Alphabet Inc have put billions into rival Anthropic.
Part of those companies' investments have been through credits to use their computing power.
Meta doesn't have a cloud business, and it's unclear what format Meta's investment will take.
Chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg has made AI Meta's top priority and said in January that the company would spend as much as US$65bil on related projects this year.
The company's push includes an effort to make Llama the industry standard worldwide.
Meta's AI chatbot – already available on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – is used by one billion people per month.
Scale, co-founded in 2016 by CEO Alexandr Wang, has been growing quickly: The startup generated revenue of US$870mil last year and expects sales to more than double to US$2bil in 2025, Bloomberg had previously reported.
Scale plays a key role in making AI data available for companies.
Because AI is only as good as the data that goes into it, Scale uses scads of contract workers to tidy up and tag images, text and other data that can then be used for AI training.
Scale and Meta share an interest in defence technology.
Last week, Meta announced a new partnership with defence contractor Anduril Industries Inc to develop products for the US military, including an AI-powered helmet with virtual and augmented reality features.
Meta has also granted approval for US government agencies and defence contractors to use its AI models.
The company is already partnering with Scale on a programme called Defence Llama – a version of Meta's Llama large language model intended for military use.
Scale has increasingly been working with the US government to develop AI for defence purposes.
Earlier this year the startup said it won a contract with the Defence Department to work on AI agent technology.

Sandal scandal: Prada credits new design's Indian legacy amid furore

LUXURY fashion powerhouse Prada has acknowledged the ancient Indian roots of its new sandal design after the debut of the open-toe footwear sparked a furore among Indian artisans and politicians thousands of miles from the catwalk in Italy. Images from Prada's fashion show in Milan last weekend showed models wearing leather sandals with a braided design that resembled handmade Kolhapuri slippers with designs dating back to the 12th century. A wave of criticism in the media and from lawmakers followed over the Italian brand's lack of public acknowledgement of the Indian sandal design, which is named after a city in the western state of Maharashtra. Lorenzo Bertelli, son of Prada's owners, responded to the sandal scandal in a letter to a trade group on Friday recognising their Indian heritage. "We acknowledge that the sandals... are inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear, with a centuries-old heritage," Bertelli, Prada's head of corporate social responsibility, wrote in the letter to the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, seen by Reuters. The sandals are at an early stage of design and it is not certain they will be commercialised, but Prada is open to a "dialogue for meaningful exchange with local Indian artisans" and will arrange follow-up meetings, he wrote. A Prada spokesperson issued a statement acknowledging the sandal's inspiration from India, adding the company has "always celebrated craftsmanship, heritage and design traditions." Prada products are beyond the reach of most Indians. Its men's leather sandals retail for US$844 and up, while the Kolhapuri slippers, sold in Indian shops and street markets, start at about US$12. India's luxury market is small but growing fast, with rising numbers of rich people buying Louis Vuitton bags, Lamborghini cars, luxury homes and watches. Conversely, Indian culture and crafts are increasingly finding their way into global brand designs. High-end jeweller Bulgari offers a US$16,000 Mangalsutra necklace inspired by a chain traditionally worn by married women. Bertelli's homage to Indian design was sent in a response to a complaint from the head of the trade group that represents 3,000 Kolhapuri sandal artisans, as the online uproar gathered momentum. "From the dusty lanes of Kolhapur to the glitzy runways of Milan... will the world finally give credit where it's due?" India's DNA News posted on X. Sambhaji Chhatrapati from the Kolhapur Royal family told Reuters by phone he was upset that craftsmen had not been acknowledged for the "history and heritage of 150 years." Kolhapur-based businessman Dileep More, however, said images of the Prada sandal were bringing cheer to some artisans as they show their traditional product going global. "They are happy that someone is recognising their work," he said.

Samyang Foods' market cap tops 10 trillion won on buldak boom

SEOUL (Bernama-Yonhap): The market capitalisation of Samyang Foods Inc., known for its globally popular Buldak spicy ramyeon, has exceeded 10 trillion won (US$7.3 billion) for the first time, helped by robust sales of the Buldak series, the main bourse said Sunday, Yonhap News Agency reported. On Friday, the company ranked 54th in market capitalisation, reaching 10.049 trillion won based on a closing price of 1,334,000 won per share, according to the Korea Exchange (KRX). Samyang Foods' share price has doubled from a year earlier and skyrocketed from around 40,000 won at the end of 2016, driven by continued viral food-eating challenges and the popularity of Buldak ramyeon's extreme spiciness. The company recently expanded one of its three domestic plants to meet rising global demand for its products. In addition to its domestic facilities, Samyang plans to begin construction of its first overseas plant in China next month. The company currently operates in China, Japan, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and the US. Last year, Samyang's sales surged 45 per cent on-year to 1.73 trillion won due to strong demand for its Buldak ramyeon series in the US and China. It earned 77 per cent of its total revenue from overseas markets. Brokerages expect Samyang's operating profit will jump 51 per cent on-year to 135.2 billion won in the second quarter and sales will rise 31 per cent to 554.6 billion won. --Bernama-Yonhap
