ST. LOUIS (AP) — James Wood hit his 24th homer, Nathaniel Lowe added a three-run shot and the Washington Nationals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 Wednesday night to give interim manager Miguel Cairo his first victory.
Cairo took over when Washington fired manager Dave Martinez and president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo hour after a 6-4 loss to Boston on Sunday.
Wood hit a solo homer in the seventh inning with an exit velocity of 115.9 mph that traveled 433 feet to center field. Wood has been named an All-Star and will take part in the Home Run Derby.
Lowe staked Washington to a lead in the first inning with his 14th homer of the season. The Nationals added three more runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Alex Call and a bloop single with the bases loaded by Jacob Young that scored two runs.
Amed Rosario hit a solo homer, his fifth, in the fifth inning, for a 7-1 lead. MacKenzie Gore (4-8) pitched six innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven as the Nationals snapped a four-game skid.
Andre Pallante (5-5) worked six innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout. Masyn Winn had three hits for the Cardinals. Key moment
Lowe's 360-foot homer in the first inning wasn't nearly as prodigious as Wood's, but it gave the Nationals all the runs they would need. Key stat
While Cairo got his first win as the Nationals' manager, it wasn't his first in the majors. Cairo was Tony La Russa's bench coach with the Chicago White Sox from 2021-22 and went 18-16 as interim manager when La Russa went on medical leave. Up next
Washington's Michael Soroka (3-6, 5.40) pitches against St. Louis' Miles Mikolas (4-6, 5.36) on Thursday.

Willy Adames, Jung Hoo Lee each drive in three runs as Giants send Dodgers to seventh straight loss

Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Willy Adames homered in the second inning and hit a two-run triple in San Francisco's five-run fifth and the Giants sent the rival Los Angeles Dodgers to their seventh straight loss with an 8-7 victory Friday night. San Francisco pulled within four games of the first-place Dodgers in the NL West. Dominic Smith homered leading off the fifth after Jung Hoo Lee's two-run triple in the fourth put San Francisco ahead against Dustin May (5-6). Lee beat out an infield single in the fifth to drive in another run. Shohei Ohtani hit his 32nd home run of the season into McCovey Cove beyond the right-field wall for a go-ahead two-run shot in the third inning. Ohtani connected after Hyeseong Kim's leadoff single marked the first hit of the night against Logan Webb (9-6), who walked Ohtani in a nine-pitch battle to begin the game and finished with six runs, six hits and six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Camilo Doval allowed Mookie Betts' single then walked Freddie Freeman before getting Will Smith to ground into a game-ending double play for his 15th save. Ohtani crushed a 91.1 mph cutter on Webb's first offering of the at-bat and the ball traveled 410 feet. Michael Conforto's two-run homer in the sixth chased Webb after he hit Betts with a pitch. The Dodgers have their worst losing streak since Sept. 2-11 2017, when they dropped 11 in a row. May, who beat the Giants on June 15, was tagged for seven earned runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. Key play Following his triple, Lee was called out at home on a fly by Casey Schmitt and a sensational throw by left fielder Conforto. The Giants challenged the call and it was upheld on review. Key stat Ohtani's blast marked the 65th home run into the water by an opponent in Oracle Park's 25-year history and 171st in all — 35 of those belong to home run king Barry Bonds. Up next Ohtani (0-1, 1.50 ERA) pitches Saturday opposite Giants RHP Landen Roupp (6-5, 3.39). ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3

Giants-Dodgers lives up to hype as Willy Adames, Jung Hoo Lee lead S.F. to 8-7 win

The sold-out crowd at Oracle Park was abuzz on Friday night. Not just for the relevant-again rivalry, but the implications. With the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in town riding a six-game losing streak for the first half's final weekend, the San Francisco Giants have an opportunity to gain ground within the National League West before the All-Star break. Shohei Ohtani captured all the attention early, hitting a two-run Splash Hit off Logan Webb in the third inning. The home run erased an early Giants lead taken on Willy Adames' solo home run in the second inning, but was just the beginning of a frenetic, offensive outpouring on both ends. The Giants answered by taking advantage of Dodgers starter Dustin May's poor command in the fourth inning. May threw six consecutive balls to Rafael Devers and Matt Chapman, resulting in two leadoff walks. Jung Hoo Lee began his stellar night with a triple into the right-center gap, a magnet on this night for big hits. Lee nearly scored on Casey Schmitt's potential sacrifice fly, but a perfect throw from left fielder Michael Conforto got him by a half-second — a call confirmed on review. Then the Giants batted around in a five-run fifth inning. It began with Dom Smith's opposite-field home run, which peaked with Adames' two-run triple into the right-center gap and Lee's infield RBI single to make it 8-2. It seemed a comfortable lead for Webb, who rarely gets that kind of run support and had been cruising since Ohtani's home run. But the Dodgers were smoking Webb's offerings in the sixth inning. After hitting Mookie Betts with a pitch, Webb surrendered back-to-back doubles to Will Smith and Teoscar Hernandez. The latter bounced off Lee's glove as he slightly overran the ball. Randy Rodriguez allowed a run in the seventh inning, the fourth total run he's allowed in 40 appearances, to make it a one-run game. Camilo Doval came in for the ninth with Ohtani, Betts and Freddie Freeman due up. Doval flirted with trouble. Betts singled and pinch-runner Esteury Ruiz stole second base, leading to a Freddie Freeman walk. Then Smith hit into a game-ending double play.

Angels slip past Diamondbacks 6-5 on d'Arnaud's RBI single in ninth

Associated Press ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Travis d'Arnaud hit a pinch-hit RBI single down the left-field line in the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 6-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night. Logan O'Hoppe was hit by a pitch with one out against left-hander Kyle Backhus (0-1) before Luis Rengifo singled and d'Arnaud delivered in place of Gustavo Campero. Zach Neto and Yoan Moncada each hit home runs in the first inning for the Angels, while Nolan Schanuel and Rengifo each had three hits as LA improved to 7-3 against NL West teams this season. Randal Grichuk hit a pair of home runs and drove in three runs as the Diamondbacks dropped to 3-7 since July 2. Arizona right-hander Ryne Nelson gave up four runs on seven hits with four walks over four innings, while Los Angeles left-hander Tyler Anderson gave up four runs on eight hits with two walks over five innings. Neto and Moncada powered a four-run first inning for the Angels, while the Diamondbacks followed with a four-run second that included Grichuk's home run and a two-run double from Alek Thomas. After Rengifo gave the Angels a 5-4 lead with a double in the fifth inning, Grichuk tied the game with another home run in the eighth. Kenley Jansen (3-2) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Angels. Key moment Angels catcher O'Hoppe, who was shaken up when Thomas scored on a slide in the third inning, walked and stole second base with two outs in the fifth ahead of Rengifo's RBI double. Key stat Neto has seven leadoff home runs, all this season, and tied the franchise record previously held by Brian Downing (1987). Up next Diamondbacks RHP Zac Gallen (7-9, 5.15 ERA), who is much improved over his last two starts, will take the mound Saturday opposite Angels LHP Yusei Kikuchi (3-6. 3.02), who is his club's only All-Star. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3
