Former USC guard Desmond Claude commits to Washington
Back in April, USC men's basketball star guard Desmond Claude made headlines when he surprisingly entered the transfer portal. On Sunday, Claude found a new home: He is headed to the Pacific Northwest to join Big Ten foe Washington.
Claude is not the first Trojan transfer to depart for the Huskies this offseason. In May, Washington hired away USC assistant coach Quincy Pondexter. Shortly following that move, another high-profile Trojan transfer, Wesley Yates III, also announced his commitment to the Huskies.
Here is what Huskies Wire had to say about the addition of Claude:
'As the Huskies scoured the country for a seasoned, high-impact wing to round out the rotation, the 6-foot-6 senior, who was named an All-Big Ten honorable mention for the 2024-25 season, is the perfect fit.
Although he shot just 30.7 percent from long range last season, which has been one of Sprinkle's biggest points of emphasis throughout the offseason, Claude led the Trojans with an average of 15.8 points and 4.2 assists per game, adding 3.5 rebounds per contest while bringing several much-needed aspects to the roster.'
With Claude and Yates both departing Southern California for Seattle, next season's matchups between USC and Washington should certainly be interesting. The Trojans and Huskies are slated to face off twice next season—once at Galen Center, and once in the Pacific Northwest.

Blue Jays Acquire Former Cy Young Winner Shane Bieber From Guardians
Former Cy Young winner and ace Shane Bieber is headed to the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays in a deal with the rebuilding Cleveland Guardians. Bieber, who is working his way back from April 2024 Tommy John surgery, has made five rehab starts. His most recent outing was Tuesday for Double-A Akron, in which he allowed one run on three hits and struck out seven in four innings. His next rehab start was scheduled for Sunday. This is a gamble by the Jays, considering that Bieber had his rehab interrupted back in May – he was originally supposed to be back in the majors in June, if all had gone to plan. Instead, his rehab shut down after a single start due to elbow soreness, and did not resume until July 15. With that in mind, this trade is more about what Bieber could potentially bring to Toronto's postseason roster than its regular season one: if Bieber returns to the majors and fully shakes the rust off by the time October rolls around, then the Jays' rotation would have a major upgrade on its hands. Bieber had spent his entire career in Cleveland, including winning the AL Cy Young Award in 2020. He has a career record of 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA and 958 strikeouts in 136 games, with 134 starts since his debut in 2018. He agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract last fall with a $16 million player option for 2026, so this trade also represents a potential rental for Toronto. Of course, if Bieber opts out of the deal, that means he's shown himself to be healthy and productive enough to gamble on himself on the open market; Toronto would likely take that trade, too. Cleveland is getting right-hander Khal Stephen from the Blue Jays in return. The 22-year old Stephen has a combined record of 9-1 with a 2.06 ERA in 18 games, with 17 starts, in the Blue Jays' farm system this season. He was a second-round selection (59th overall) by Toronto in the 2024 amateur draft. He made one start for Double-A New Hampshire following his promotion on July 20 before being placed on the injured list with right shoulder impingement. The Guardians began trade deadline day in second place in the AL Central, nine games behind the Tigers and potentially in the wild-card race, but their moves – they also traded Paul Sewald to the Tigers – signal this has become a spiraling season. Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase, a three-time All-Star, was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of a Major League Baseball investigation into sports betting earlier in the week. Luis Ortiz also is on non-disciplinary leave through Aug. 31, stemming from an investigation regarding in-game prop bets on two pitches thrown by the right-hander that received higher activity than usual during his starts at Seattle on June 15 and against St. Louis on June 27. The gambling activity on the pitches was flagged by a betting integrity firm and forwarded to MLB. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Wisconsin football linebacker named to Butkus Award watch list
Wisconsin football starting linebacker Christian Alliegro was named to the 2025 Dick Butkus Award preseason watch list on Wednesday. The rising junior defender was listed as one of 51 players to make the watch list for the award that annually honors the best linebacker in college football. The most noteworthy include Anthony Hill (Texas), Whit Weeks (LSU), C.J. Allen (Georgia), Taurean York (Texas A&M) and Deontae Lawson (Alabama). Including Alliegro, a total of 11 Big Ten defenders cracked the list, headlined by three Michigan Wolverines, a pair of Oregon Ducks and two Ohio State defenders. Notable recent winners include Georgia's Jalon Walker, Iowa's Jack Campbell, Georgia's Nakobe Dean, Georgia's Roquon Smith, Alabama's Reuben Foster, Notre Dame's Jaylon Smith and Manti Te'o and Boston College's Luke Kuechly. Alliegro enters his third year in Madison as one of Mike Tressel's most valuable individual playmakers. As a sophomore, the Connecticut native registered 66 total tackles (44 solo, 22 assisted), three sacks, and one pass defended across 12 appearances. On Nov. 2 against Iowa, Alliegro tallied 16 tackles -- the most for any Badger in a game all season. A member of Phil Steele's All-Big Ten fourth team, the defensive lynchpin also finished the 2024 campaign as one of the Big Ten's most prolific inside linebacker pass-rushers, finishing as its eighth-best ILB in that metric. Alliegro projects to line up alongside Darryl Peterson, Tackett Curtis and Mason Reiger as a linebacker during the 2025 season. That unit will look to jumpstart a defense tasked with handling some of the most potent offenses in college football this fall. Specifically, Wisconsin will take on Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota in its third season with head coach Luke Fickell at the helm. Alliegro will captain his program's defense when it takes on Miami (OH) to start the season on Thursday, Aug. 28. Kyle Schwarber will defer his Indiana University Hall of Fame selection because of attendance rule
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — All-Star Game MVP Kyle Schwarber is deferring his selection to Indiana University's Athletics Hall of Fame to a future year because of a rule requiring all living inductees to attend the ceremony. Indiana's induction is set for Sept. 5, a day Schwarber's Philadelphia Phillies visit the Miami Marlins as they attempt to win their second straight NL East title. Schwarber was selected in his first year of eligibility. Indiana's athletic department announced the selections on Thursday. Schwarber was one of the school's biggest baseball stars, leading the Hoosiers to two Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles while ranking among career leaders in hits (238), home runs (40), runs (182) and slugging percentage (.607) while batting .341. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2014, made his major league debut the following June and helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016. This season, the 32-year-old Schwarber ranks among the major league leaders with 37 home runs. He hit home runs on all three of his swings in the first All-Star Game swing-off to give the National League a victory over the American League. The three-time All-Star has 321 home runs and 738 RBIs in 11 seasons with the Cubs, Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox and Phillies. Schwarber was the headliner of Indiana's seven-member Hall of Fame class. The other selections are Cody Zeller, who has spent the last 11 seasons playing in the NBA, All-American rower Meradith Dickensheets, 2008 NCAA wrestling champion Angel Escobedo, former football star Mel Groomes, five-time track and field All-American Glenn Terry and Peggy Martin, a pioneering three-sport star in field hockey, women's basketball and softball from 1969-72.
