Trump seeks to delay appeal of $83 million judgment in E. Jean Carroll case
Trump is appealing a 2024 verdict ordering him to pay former magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll $83 million for defaming her in 2019 when he denied her accusation that he sexually assaulted her in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman department store in the mid-1990s. Trump has denied all allegations.

On Wednesday, a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Trump's attempt to have the government substitute for him as a party in the case -- and his attorneys now argue that they should be allowed to appeal before oral arguments take place on June 24.
"The United States and President Trump are entitled to immediate review of the panel's erroneous Westfall Act decision by this Court en banc and, if necessary, by the Supreme Court," a joint filing from Trump and the Justice Department said Friday.
DOJ lawyers say that since some of Trump's alleged conduct in the case fell within the scope of his role as president, the Justice Department should be able to defend him in court.
"The Attorney General certified that President Trump was acting within the scope of his federal office or employment at the time of his 2017 statements, made from the White House, out of which Plaintiff-Appellee's claims arose. As a result, the United States should have been substituted as a defendant in place of President Trump," they argued in Friday's filing.
The 2nd Circuit last week upheld a separate, $5 million damage award to Carroll that Trump must pay.

1 injured, 4 dead after Hazle Township crash
HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) says four people are dead and one man was sent to the hospital after a Hazle Township crash that led to a fatal car fire. In a release, troopers say just after 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning, crews were called to a crash on the Cando Expressway, or State Route 924, west of its intersection with Oakridge Road. During their investigation, state police say that the driver of the car was traveling north on the Cando Expressway, lost control, and crossed over into the oncoming lane. Troopers explained that the car then began to spin, left the roadway to the right, hitting multiple trees, then spun around and came to a stop on its passenger side. Police investigating in Schuylkill County after 15-year-old struck by car, sent to hospital The car was then engulfed in flames, trapping the five occupants, and passersby were able to free a 21-year-old man from the blaze, state police say. Troopers went on to say the four unidentified passengers of the car were unable to leave the car fire and were pronounced dead on the scene. State police say the passengers who died in the fire were unable to be identified due to the extent of their injuries and are pending identification by the coroner. The man pulled from the car was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for treatment of their injuries, the release says. PFL exec offers Donald Trump a White House card with Francis Ngannou prior to UFC event
The idea of hosting fights at the White House has the entire MMA world going crazy, and PFL wants in on the action. During a recent speech, president Donald Trump revealed the idea of hosting a UFC event at the executive residence as a part of the country's 250th anniversary. Trump wants to go big and host 25,000 spectators, similar to a typical UFC pay-per-view event on Independence Day in 2026. Even though there were no additional details, Trump's press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president was "dead serious" about the event. Advertisement Now, PFL wants to be part of the festivities, creating an all-day MMA extravaganza. PFL chairman and founder Donn Davis tagged Trump in a message on X (formerly Twitter), offering a stacked lineup of seven fights that would take place prior to UFC event. The proposed fight card includes the biggest names in the promotion including Francis Ngannou, Cris Cyborg, Dakota Ditcheva and Usman Nurmagomedov. "MMA at White House great idea @realDonaldTrump for July 4, 2026," Davis wrote. The White House is not a sports event venue, and does not have an indoor area large enough to host an event at the scale Trump wants. Therefore, the event would have to take place outdoors, which major promotions typically avoid due to weather. The UFC has always maintained a firm stance against hosting fights outdoors due to conditions that could affect the fighting surface, potentially causing problems for the fighters. However, considering the relationship between Trump and UFC CEO Dana White, the promotion may make an exception to pull off the event. If it goes forward, PFL hopes to be a part of the action too. Defamation lawsuit filed by ex-Minneapolis police officer can move forward, court rules
Part of a lawsuit filed against the city of Minneapolis and its police chief by a former officer can move forward, the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled last week. The lawsuit was filed against Chief Brian O'Hara and the city of Minneapolis in December 2023 by Tyler Timberlake, who was fired after joining the Minneapolis Police Department earlier that year. It accuses the city and O'Hara of defamation. The city and O'Hara tried to get the lawsuit dismissed, but a district court declined to do so in February. They appealed again, bringing the case to the appellate court. There, the court decided that one count of defamation from the lawsuit against O'Hara may go forward based on O'Hara's comments to the media. The defamation claim based on the city's statements in Timberlake's termination letter, however, will not go forward because they are protected by statutory immunity. The case will now go back to the district court. No further court dates have been scheduled. Timberlake, who is White, sued after a video from June 2020 surfaced of him — during his time as an officer in Fairfax County, Virginia — assaulting La Monta Gladney, an unarmed Black man who appeared to be in the midst of a mental health crisis. Body camera video showed Timberlake deploying a stun gun on Gladney, hitting him with it, and then using it again. He then kneeled on Gladney's neck and back. The violent encounter happened just days after George Floyd's murder in Minneapolis by former officer Derek Chauvin. Timberlake was charged with three counts of misdemeanor assault and battery but was acquitted in 2022. When news of Timberlake's past surfaced in April 2023, O'Hara said he knew nothing about it before hiring Timberlake. That claim was disputed by the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis. and contributed to this report.
