Lawler nears decision on NY governor bid

The Hilla day ago
Rep. Mike Lawler (D-N.Y.) said during a recent cable news appearance that he is nearing his decision on if he will launch his gubernatorial bid to challenge New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D).
'Are you running for governor of New York, yes or no,' CNN host Dana Bash asked Lawler, who represents New York's 17th Congressional District, on Friday.
'As we are out of time — I will be making a decision in the next few weeks,' Lawler responded.
Lawler, who represents a battleground district in the House, previously said he would make a decision by June. He is not the only House GOP lawmaker seriously considering unseating Hochul, who was elected governor in November 2022.
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), an ally of President Trump, is preparing to formally roll out her gubernatorial run, The Hill reported on June 26.
'It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when,' one of the sources told The Hill, adding that the Stefanik, whom Trump nominated to be his ambassador to the United Nations before withdrawing the bid in late March, will declare her candidacy 'at the time and place' of her choosing.
Hochul leads Stefanik, Lawler and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman — all potential GOP gubernatorial candidates — by a minimum of 20 points in head-to-head matchups, according to a Siena College poll published on Tuesday.
Trump endorsed both Blakeman and Lawler in May for reelection in their respective races. The president lost the blue-leaning state by 12 points during his 2024 presidential run, closing the gap compared to 2020, when he lost the Empire State to Joe Biden by 23 points.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the 2026 New York governor's race as 'Likely Democrat.'

Trump Admin Insider Blows Lid Off Tariffs: ‘It's All Fake'

A source deeply embedded in the Trump administration's ongoing trade talks accused the Republican president of waging a tariff war for TV ratings. '[Donald] Trump knows the most interesting part of his presidency is the tariff conversation,' the White House insider, who chose to remain anonymous out of fear of reprisal, told Politico. 'It's all fake. There's no deadline. It's a self-imposed landmark in this theatrical show, and that's where we are.' In April, the MAGA figurehead paused his sweeping 'Liberation Day' tariffs to announce a three-month window for the world to negotiate new trade agreements with the United States—or face the full fury of his levies. In a subsequent interview with Time magazine, Trump claimed to have in principle already 'made all the deals' with more than 200 foreign partners, before later suggesting the real number would likely be closer to just a few dozen. Yet ahead of a self-imposed July 9 deadline, only the UK and China have inked relatively limited arrangements, with less than four days now left to go. As global markets brace for the Wednesday deadline, Trump has lately appeared full of tough talk in his public appearances, telling reporters Friday he'd already signed more than 12 'take it or leave it' letters to various countries reminding them of the levies they'll face if a deal is not soon reached, Reuters reported. On other occasions, Truymp appeared to revel in the uncertainty that his tariff regime has created. 'We can do whatever we want,' he said of the deadline during a White House press conference Tuesday, CNBC reported. 'We could extend it, we could make it shorter. I'd like to make it shorter.' That ambivalence apparently has some of the president's allies questioning just how far he's willing to go to net new trade opportunities for the country. 'You have wins. Take them,' as the White House insider put it to Politico. 'You only have to assume he doesn't want to take them because he likes the game too much.' In a statement to the Daily Beast, White House spokesman Kush Desai said 'the hollowing out of American Main Streets and industries by unfair foreign trade practices is not a theatrical show.' Desai added, 'President Trump pledged to use tariffs to level the playing field and restore American Greatness, and the Administration is committed to delivering on this pledge.'

Musk announces 'America Party' founding

Elon Musk announced the founding of the America Party on Saturday and said it will focus on winning a small number of Senate and House seats in 2026. File photo by Francis Chung/UPI | License Photo July 5 (UPI) -- Entrepreneur and former Department of Government Efficiency Director Elon Musk on Saturday announced the creation of the America Party. Musk says the American Party will restore democracy and freedom after suggesting he would a new political party amid a high-profile feud with President Donald Trump. He conducted a straw poll on his social media platform X on Friday, Politico reported. "By a factor or 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it," Musk said Saturday afternoon in a post on X. "When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy," Musk continued. "Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom." Musk suggested the political party would focus on two or three Senate seats and between eight and 10 House seats during the 2026 mid-term elections, CNBC reported. Given the narrow margins among House and Senate majorities in recent years, a small number of seats in both chambers would be enough to significantly influence legislation, Musk said. He said the party would caucus independently of Democrats and Republicans but enter into legislative discussions with both. Musk did not say if he registered the party with the Federal Election Commission, but an "America Party" search of the FEC website did not produce any results on Saturday.
