Manitoba took home the gold at this year's Under-18 Indigenous Cup.
Football Manitoba held the tournament from Thursday to Sunday at the St. Vital Mustangs field as tackle football players from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northwestern Ontario competed.
The event culminated with a gold medal match between Manitoba and Alberta on Sunday, with Team Manitoba coming out victorious on home soil.
'What a fantastic ending to the tournament,' said Bill Johnson, executive director of Football Manitoba.
'The fact that it came down to last-second plays and laterals and big comebacks and all these things going on. It was so much fun, and I think everyone really enjoyed it.'
Manitoba's U-18 Indigenous Cup roster included 27 players from all across the province.
This year's jersey's featured updated language to represent the communities, bands and tribes that make up the team.
'It's a unique experience for these kids in the sense that it's a high-level sport…but also there's a cultural component built into it and there's pride in the fact that we're not just football players, but we're Indigenous football players,' Johnson said.
'I think that's a really neat thing that we're able to offer that opportunity to these kids.'

All criminal trials in four B.C. courts to be rescheduled during FIFA World Cup

The chief justice of the British Columbia Supreme Court says all criminal trials that were to take place in Vancouver, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and New Westminster during the FIFA World Cup next year will have to be rescheduled. Chief Justice Ron Skolrood says in a notice posted Monday that the tournament is expected to have 'very significant impacts' on court operations at the affected Supreme Court locations. The notice says neither jury nor judge-only criminal trials will take place at the four locations from June 12 to July 8, 2026, and that no civil jury trials will take place either. It says the number of non-jury civil trials may also have to be reduced in the lead up to the tournament. The notice cites the draw on police resources around the Lower Mainland, heavy traffic that will make it difficult for sheriffs to transport suspects, and a potential lack of hotel rooms for jurors and out-of-town witnesses. B.C. top court judge hears arguments in constitutional challenge of province's Mental Health Act Skolrood says the court is committed to having enough capacity for 'urgent matters,' but the service reductions during the tournament are 'unavoidable.' 'The full extent of the impacts is uncertain and will remain so for some time,' the notice says. 'We do know that the effects on the police and sheriff resources required to participate in or support the court's operations will be substantial, particularly in respect of criminal trials and jury trials.' In a statement, B.C. Conservatives Attorney General Critic Steve Kooner says the disruptions are due to 'poor planning involving policing shortages' and he calls for a review of all the cases impacted by the FIFA World Cup games. 'The public deserve to know how many criminals will walk free because the Premier (David Eby) failed to plan for the world's largest sporting event,' Kooner says in the statement.

Blue Jays win their ninth in a row by defeating host White Sox

Eventually and inevitably, the Blue Jays will lose a game. Article content Based on how they have been playing and based on the opponents they will be facing, they may not experience a defeat until after baseball's all-star break. Article content Article content The momentum built from a seven-game home stand sweep carried over into the Windy City, where the Blue Jays recorded back-to-back homers in the fifth inning en route to an 8-4 thumping of the host Chicago White Sox on Monday night. Article content It was Toronto's ninth win in a row. Article content Two more games against the lowly White Sox await, followed by three games in West Sacramento, Calif., against the equally woeful Athletics, whom the Jays swept at home, before the break kicks in, which has the potential to disrupt the surge this team has generated. Article content When all is said and done, the Jays have a realistic chance to establish a franchise record for consecutive wins in a season. Article content The high-water mark is 11. Article content The following are three takeaways on a night when the Blue Jays hit three home runs, while scoring four runs in the sixth inning before an out was recorded. Article content 1. Berrios in cruise control Article content In his 19th start of the season, Jose Berrios faced the White Sox for the second time. Article content When he first faced Chicago in Toronto a fortnight ago, the veteran right-hander earned the win. That day, Berrios gave up two hits and one run in 7.2 innings. Article content On Monday, he gave up his first run in the home half of the second inning. Article content Had Vladimir Guerrero Jr. been able to handle a sharply hit ball at first base, Chicago would not have scored. Article content Guerrero did make amends by drawing a leadoff walk in the fourth, stole second base and came around to score the tying run. Article content Berrios pitched with the lead after Joey Loperfido went deep on a solo shot, one day after he knocked in a run after being called up from Buffalo for the first time this season. Loperfido added a two-run single in the sixth inning Article content Through five innings, Berrios had given up two hits, both singles. Article content When he started the sixth inning, Berrios had all kinds of room for error. Article content No need to have Berrios on the mound to start the seventh, or so it appeared, with the game firmly in control, paving the way for RHP Robinson Pina to make his Blue Jays debut. Article content He gave up two runs in the inning and had two runners on base in the eighth, forcing the Jays to have Nick Sandlin warm up in the bullpen. Article content A one-out base hit scored Chicago's fourth run, prompting the Jays to summon Sandlin. Article content 2. Taking the lead Article content Hard to argue with anything the Jays have done or question any decision the club has made amid so many games being won and the club ascending to first in the AL East.

Blue Jays extend streak to nine with 8-4 win over White Sox

Joey Loperfido homered and drove in three runs, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 8-4 on Monday night for their ninth consecutive win. Addison Barger and Nathan Lukes also connected as AL East-leading Toronto improved to 27-10 in its last 37 games. Bo Bichette had two hits and All-Star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked three times. At 53-38, the Blue Jays matched the franchise record for most victories before the All-Star break. It's the longest win streak for the team since an 11-game run in August 2015. José Berríos (5-3) pitched six innings of one-run ball, bouncing back nicely after he struggled in a no-decision against the New York Yankees on Wednesday. The right-hander improved to 16-6 with a 2.96 ERA in 27 career starts against Chicago. Blue Jays getting contributions from across the roster in eight-game win streak Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk named to his second all-star game Mike Tauchman had three hits and two RBIs for the last-place White Sox, who won two of three at Toronto last month. Colson Montgomery, one of the team's top prospects, went 0 for 3 with a walk in his home debut. The Blue Jays opened an 8-1 lead when they scored five times in the sixth. Barger hit a two-run drive off Sean Burke for his 12th homer, and Loperfido chopped a two-run single over a drawn-in infield. Burke (4-8) was charged with six runs and six hits in five-plus innings. The right-hander allowed two earned runs in 16 1/3 innings over his previous three outings.
