Kingsley Moghalu: The African School of Governance, a Catalyst for Transforming Governance in Africa

H-Tayea
At the meeting organized by the African School of Governance (ASG) in Cairo on April 30, 2025, Kingsley Moghalu, President of ASG, shared his vision on the crucial role of governance and technology in Africa's development.
In an exclusive interview, he discussed the challenges facing the continent, the importance of education in shaping a new generation of leaders, and how ASG is positioning itself to transform Africa into a major global player. Discover his thoughts on the future of governance in Africa and the skills required to tackle current challenges.
Q: Mr. Moghalu, you are the President of the African School of Governance (ASG), an academic institution founded by key figures such as President Paul Kagame and former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. Could you tell us about the vision behind the creation of ASG and its role in developing governance in Africa?
Kingsley Moghalu: ASG was created with a clear vision: to solve the governance challenges that limit the sustainable development of our continent. We know that Africa has enormous potential, but to fully realize it, we need to strengthen the capabilities of our leaders and institutions. ASG positions itself as a catalyst for this transformation by training leaders capable of improving governance and implementing effective public policies. This initiative fits into a context where countries like Egypt, for example, urgently need innovative solutions in governance and development. We must therefore teach the proper management of resources and efficiency in decision-making.
Q: You mentioned the importance of technology in Africa's development. Why do you believe that Africa has a particular advantage in this field, and how does ASG fit into this technological dynamic?
Kingsley Moghalu: Technology is indeed the key element in the modern world. Africa has a rich scientific and technological heritage, with exceptional natural resources and a youth increasingly focused on innovation. We have the advantage of vast local talent pools, as well as African scientists in the diaspora who contribute to significant advancements. This is why ASG integrates technology into its programs. We offer courses focused on science, technology, and innovation, along with a research center dedicated to technological governance. Our goal is to train tomorrow's leaders who not only understand technology but use it to improve productivity and resource management. We want to prepare leaders capable of navigating the digital economy and strengthening governance through technological tools.
Q: You mentioned that Technology is not merely consumed in Africa, it is a means to create wealth and productivity. Can you explain further how this vision goes beyond simply adopting technology?
Kingsley Moghalu: Exactly. Africa must not just consume technology but also become a producer and innovator. If we don't shift to production, we risk remaining in a consumer role, dependent on other continents. To achieve this, we need to encourage our youth to create technological solutions that address our own needs, whether in agriculture, healthcare, education, or even governance. This involves not only training technology specialists but also rethinking our economic structures to allow local innovation to flourish. At ASG, we train leaders who will use technology to transform our economies and societies.
Q: You also spoke about the need to manage population growth to accelerate economic development in Africa. How does ASG approach this challenge?
Kingsley Moghalu: The population issue is critical. Africa is experiencing rapid demographic growth, but for this growth to be beneficial, it must be accompanied by faster economic growth. In Asia, for example, managing population and economic development has been a key factor in their success. We too must invest in education and infrastructure to ensure that our youth have the best opportunities. ASG prepares its students to understand demographic dynamics and formulate public policies that address these challenges while creating an environment conducive to economic growth.
Q: You emphasized the importance of education and training in the emergence of a new class of African leaders. What role does ASG play in this transformation?
Kingsley Moghalu: Education is the primary tool for transforming the continent. At ASG, we don't just teach theories. We train practitioners who can make effective decisions and implement concrete public policies. Our Master of Public Administration (MPA) program aims to give our students the necessary skills to govern effectively. The idea is not just to know what to do but to know how to do it in an African context. We teach our students to solve problems pragmatically, based on our local realities, leveraging available resources, and drawing on concrete examples from different African countries.
Q: You are deeply involved in training leaders in Africa. What qualities do you believe an African leader must possess to navigate the current challenges facing the continent?
Kingsley Moghalu: An African leader must first and foremost have a clear vision of what they want to achieve for their country and the continent. They must be able to understand global issues while staying grounded in local realities. They must be an innovator, able to think differently and propose new solutions to old problems. And above all, they must be an executor, not just a theorist. This is why ASG emphasizes the execution of public policies, as this is often where Africa faces difficulties. Our leaders must be able to implement concrete policies, follow through on their execution, and adjust their approach when necessary.
Q: Finally, what message would you like to send to young Africans considering joining ASG and contributing to the transformation of our continent?
Kingsley Moghalu: I would tell them not to wait. Africa's future belongs to those who prepare today. ASG is here to offer you the opportunity to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to be leaders who will make a real difference. We believe in your potential and offer you an environment where you can learn, grow, and most importantly, act to transform Africa's future. Join us and be the change-makers you want to see on the continent.

Powering Progress in West Africa: CNKEEYA's Vision for Innovation, Partnership, and Industrial Empowerment at Ghana Investment and Trade Week 2025

Vision and Purpose Information: In your opinion, what role do international exhibitions play in shaping your sector's future? CNKEEYA: Connect global trends+drive industry upgrading International exhibitions are industry innovation's 'barometer' and 'accelerator'. Firstly, it gathers global technological frontiers such as intelligent power distribution, new energy integration, and digital operation and maintenance, allowing us to directly touch the pulse of the industry; Secondly, the exhibition promotes deep integration between supply and demand, and real-time feedback on customer pain points drives rapid product iteration. More importantly, it has built a cross-regional cooperation ecosystem, such as the explosive demand for infrastructure and new energy in Africa at this exhibition, which is driving the evolution of distribution technology towards high adaptability (such as dust and moisture prevention), off-grid/microgrid compatibility, and intelligent low-cost solutions. Exhibiting is not only about showcasing products, but also about participating in defining the future of the industry Strategic Goals and Market Expansion Mid East Information: What strategic objectives are you hoping to accomplish by being part of GITW and its co-located events GITW (Ghana Investment and Trade week) and its co-located shows Africa Build Show and Megawatt)? CNKEEYA: Trinity strategy – market penetration, brand building, and ecological co-construction We deeply participate in GITW and concurrent exhibitions with three major goals: Market anchoring: In the wave of infrastructure development in Ghana and West Africa, establish the company's position as a core supplier of high-end industrial power distribution solutions, focusing on breakthroughs in industrial parks, new energy power stations, and urban upgrading projects; Brand trust: By showcasing the functions of products on site, we aim to reverse the stereotype in the African market that 'Made in China=Low end'; Ecological cooperation: Seeking deep binding with local EPC contractors, power companies, and Chinese infrastructure enterprises to build a long-term cooperation model of 'technology output+localized services' New Markets Mid East Information: Are you targeting any new markets or audiences through this participation? CNKEEYA: Focus on the incremental track, break through customer groups in layers This exhibition focuses on two types of incremental markets: New energy infrastructure: including photovoltaic power stations, distribution systems for energy storage projects (displaying high protection outdoor cabinets, DC distribution solutions), with customers being new energy investors and EPC contractors; Industrial upgrading projects, such as the construction of new factories for automobiles/food processing (mainly promoting modular intelligent cabinets+energy efficiency management platforms), targeting manufacturing enterprises and industrial real estate developers. At the same time, we are in contact with West African power companies to provide high-reliability distribution equipment for their urban power grid renovation, which will be a key growth point in the next three years Significance of the Platform Mid East Information: Why do you believe Ghana Investment and Trade week) and its co-located shows Africa Build Show and Megawatt is an important platform for your industry segment? CNKEEYA: Regional hub value+precise industry focus This exhibition has three irreplaceable values: Regional radiation power: Ghana is a trade hub in West Africa, with exhibitions covering core economies such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Cote d'Ivoire, exhibiting from one location and radiating to multiple countries; Industry verticality: During the same period, the African Construction Exhibition and the Megawatt Exhibition accurately gathered infrastructure decision-makers – from government planning departments, Chinese engineering enterprises, to local contractors, customers, and demands were highly matched; Policy indicator: The Ghanaian government is promoting the '1D1F' industrialisation and renewable energy transformation (with a target of 10% renewable energy by 2030), and the exhibition will directly dialogue with policymakers to seize the strategic window period Regional & Global Impact Mid East Information: How do you envision your company's participation contributing to regional economic or industrial development? CNKEEYA: Technology empowerment + localised value creation Our participation will drive regional development from three dimensions: Technological upgrade: Introducing intelligent distribution technology (such as remote operation and maintenance, power quality optimisation) to help local industries reduce power outage losses by more than 30%, reduce operation and maintenance costs by 40% (with case data attached), and enhance manufacturing competitiveness; Localised Collaboration: We plan to establish a technical service center in Ghana, train local electrician teams, and procure local chassis processing components to create employment and technology transfer. Sustainable support: providing highly reliable power distribution guarantees for key facilities such as solar power plants and hospitals, directly assisting people's livelihoods and energy transformation. The ultimate goal is to become a long-term partner in modernising electricity in Africa, rather than a short-term equipment supplier CNKEEYA at GITW 2025Empowering West Africa's energy transformation through intelligent distribution technology, strategic partnerships, and localised value creation. Committed to shaping a sustainable industrial future across the region. Learn more: Register to Ghana & Investment Trade Week : Register for the Africa Build Show: Register for Megawatt:

Egypt deepens global transport, industrial partnerships through strategic engagement at Connectivity Forum

During his visit to Türkiye to participate in the Global Transport Connectivity Forum 2025, Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, spearheaded a comprehensive diplomatic and investment outreach aimed at reinforcing Egypt's global role in transport and industrial integration. Al-Wazir's mission included a series of high-level meetings with international industry leaders, starting with Ugur Dalbeler, Vice President of the World Steel Association and Deputy Head of Türkiye's Steel Producers Association. The two sides discussed expanding collaboration in the iron and steel sector, a strategic industrial priority for Egypt. Al-Wazir underlined Egypt's determination to localise heavy industries, enhance domestic manufacturing, and grow exports through the adoption of advanced global technologies and mutually beneficial partnerships. At a roundtable hosted by the Turkish Independent Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (MÜSİAD), the minister addressed leading Turkish investors across sectors such as textiles, chemicals, food processing, logistics, and energy. He presented Egypt's competitive edge, including its young and cost-efficient labour force, prime geographic location linking Africa, Asia, and Europe, and preferential access to international markets through over a dozen free trade agreements. These advantages, he said, establish Egypt as a prime hub for manufacturing, exports, and global trade. Al-Wazir also took part in the forum's high-level ministerial session, 'The Future of Connectivity in a Fragmented World,' alongside Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and representatives from the United Nations. In his remarks, he spotlighted Egypt's investment in multimodal transport corridors that integrate regional production zones with international trade routes. He stressed the central role of the Suez Canal—through which over 100 vessels transit daily—and detailed ongoing upgrades to Egypt's seaports, logistics centres, and high-speed rail lines as part of a broader vision to reinforce the country's logistical connectivity. Further advancing regional cooperation, Al-Wazir met with Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Grozdan Karadjov to accelerate bilateral agreements in maritime and logistics. Key among these was a planned memorandum of understanding between Alexandria Port and Bulgaria's Port of Burgas. The talks also explored joint industrial ventures focused on technology transfer and coordinated exports to African markets. Al-Wazir stressed that Egypt is transitioning from a traditional transit corridor to a fully integrated hub for transport and production. He presented Egypt as a stable and strategic partner within global supply chains, contributing actively to initiatives such as China's Belt and Road Initiative, the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC), and the emerging Development Road linking Iraq, the Gulf, and Europe. Concluding his visit, Al-Wazir reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to strengthening regional and global economic integration. He extended an open invitation to international partners—particularly from Türkiye and Bulgaria—to invest in Egypt's transport infrastructure and manufacturing sectors. Emphasising the importance of shared infrastructure, technology-driven planning, and resilient logistics networks, he reiterated Egypt's readiness to support investors committed to engaging with its real economy and contributing to a redefined regional trade landscape.

Uganda's president seeks a seventh term that would bring him closer to 5 decades in power - Africa

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Saturday sought nomination for a seventh term, a move that would bring him closer to five decades in power. Museveni, 80, has defied calls for his retirement, as critics warn that he has veered into authoritarianism with virtually no opposition even within his ruling National Resistance Movement party. He was welcomed by a large crowd of supporters as he went to collect nomination papers from the offices of the ruling party in Kampala, the Ugandan capital. Museveni first took power as head of a rebel force in 1986. He has since been elected six times, though recent elections have been marred by violence and allegations of vote rigging. His main opponent in the last election was the popular entertainer known as Bobi Wine, who has also declared his candidacy in the polls set for January 2026. Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has seen many associates jailed or go into hiding as security forces cracked down on opposition supporters. Museveni has dismissed Wine as 'an agent of foreign interests' who cannot be trusted with power. Wine has been arrested many times on various charges but has never been convicted. He insists he is running a nonviolent campaign. Decades ago, Museveni himself had criticised African leaders who overstayed their welcome in office. In Uganda, lawmakers did the same thing for him when they jettisoned the last constitutional obstacle — age limits — for a possible life presidency. His son, army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has asserted his wish to succeed his father, raising fears of hereditary rule. A long-time opposition leader, Kizza Besigye, has been jailed since November over alleged treason charges his lawyers say are politically motivated. Besigye, a physician who retired from Uganda's military at the rank of colonel, is a former president of the Forum for Democratic Change party, for many years Uganda's most prominent opposition group. The East African country has never seen a peaceful transfer of power since its independence from Britain in 1962. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
