Shashi Tharoor criticises Kerala government's ‘misplaced generosity' in sending Turkey aid in 2023
Tharoor's comments came in the backdrop of Ankara's support for Islamabad during heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, and amid reports that Pakistan used Turkish-made drones during the conflict.
The Congress MP on Friday referred to a report noting that the Kerala government had sanctioned Rs 10 crore as financial assistance to Turkey after the 2023 earthquake and said: 'I hope the Govt of Kerala reflects on its misplaced generosity, after seeing Turkey's behaviour two years later. Not to mention that the people of Wayanad [just to take one Kerala example] could have used those ten crores far better.'
Tharoor was referring to a series of landslides triggered by heavy rains in Wayanad in July 2024, which left over 400 dead. The landslides took place a year-and-a-half after the earthquake in Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023, which killed over 50,000 persons and injured over 1.2 lakh.

Responding to Tharoor's remark, Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas said that while he had great regard for the Congress MP, his comments were symptoms of 'selective amnesia'.
'It is as amusing [and] puzzling why he had to belittle Kerala when he knows very well the Modi govt itself had launched Operation Dost to help Turkey,' Brittas said. 'Kerala bashing is unwarranted.'
Under Operation Dost, the Indian government had sent relief material worth over Rs 7 crore to Turkey and Syria. India had also sent three teams of the National Disaster Response Force to Turkey, as well as personnel and equipment to set up a field hospital.

In response to Tharoor's criticism of the Kerala government, state Finance Minister and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader KN Balagopal also said that the financial assistance to Turkey was not a case of misplaced generosity, The Indian Express reported.
'At the time of a major disaster, we had to take a humane approach,' Balagopal said. 'The aid was handed over to Turkey through the Indian Ministry of External Affairs [MEA]. It is wrong to club that gesture of 2023 with the border crisis of 2025.'
Amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, Tharoor is leading a delegation of MPs to the United States, Brazil and several other countries to put forward New Delhi's stand on the conflict. Brittas is also part of a delegation headed to Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Sunday sought the central government's intervention in the release of a Ramban resident abducted by militants from Dosso region in the West African country of Niger. As Vellappally continues ‘anti-Muslim' remarks, Congress says his ‘divisive statements' at CM Vijayan's behest
Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) general secretary Vellappally Natesan's alleged hate speech against the Muslim community in Kerala has created a political storm with Opposition Congress alleging that he was making the 'divisive statements'' at the behest of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Natesan, who had recently predicted a third consecutive term for Vijayan, on Sunday said that Kerala will become a Muslim majority state by 2040. 'Muslims have become an unbeatable force in the state. Whichever party is in power, Muslim clerics including Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musaliyar are interfering in the government. The situation is such that any reforms, before being introduced, should get consent from Malappuram (Muslim-dominated district),'' he alleged. His remarks at an SNDP function was a sequel to a similar comment on Saturday, when he said the IUML, which is mainly operating in North Kerala, was eyeing seats in Central Kerala in the next Assembly elections. 'After winning the elections, the IUML wants to get the chief minister's post,' he claimed. Coming out against Natesan, Opposition Leader V D Satheesan said community leaders should desist from making such 'divisive statements.'' 'The SNDP Yogam general secretary has echoed what the CPI(M) leaders in Kerala speak against Malappuram and what the Chief Minister had stated in Delhi through public relation agencies. Incidentally, the leader of the traditionally pro-CPI(M) Ezhava community has stepped up the attack on the IUML after the CPI(M) failed in its efforts to woo the IUML into the party-led Left Democratic Front fold after its crushing defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In April, Natesan had stated that backward communities 'cannot breathe freely' in the Muslim-dominated Malappuram district, which he termed 'a special country and a state with a special section of people'. Although his observations had triggered an outrage then, Natesan got support from Vijayan, who said the Ezhava community leader's words were 'misrepresented.'' Natesan had been the patron of SNDP's political wing, Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS), which is now an ally of BJP-led NDA in Kerala. Natesan's son Tushar Vellappally is the BDJS chairman. Although the BDJS is with the NDA, the party at the grassroots level has to depend upon followers of the SNDP, many of them traditionally with the CPI(M).
