Police: Terengganu ECRL sites hit by 22 thefts this year, nearly RM300,000 lost
KUALA TERENGGANU, June 25 — Terengganu police recorded 22 theft-related reports, including cable thefts, at East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project sites across the state from January 1 to May 31 this year, with estimated losses totalling RM300,000.
State police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said 13 investigation papers were opened — five cases in Besut, four in Marang, two in Setiu, and one each in Kemaman and Dungun.
'Of these, five cases have been charged in court under Sections 414 and 379/511 of the Penal Code. Another five were classified as no further action (NFA) due to lack of evidence, while three are still under investigation,' he told Bernama here today.
He noted the number of cases had declined compared to the same period last year, when 35 reports were lodged, involving nearly RM2 million in losses.
At that time, 23 investigation papers were opened — eight cases in Marang, five each in Kuala Terengganu and Besut, three in Setiu, and two in Dungun.
'Of those cases, eight were brought to court under the same sections, five were given NFA status, and 10 remain under investigation,' he added.
Mohd Khairi advised project site operators to strengthen security to prevent further theft, especially involving cables.
He recommended installing perimeter fencing, CCTV cameras, and adequate lighting, especially at night, in addition to deploying sufficient security personnel and maintaining a well-organised inventory system for construction materials and equipment.
He also urged nearby communities to report any suspicious activity or unauthorised movements around project sites to authorities or site management.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke had previously said the police must take firm action against cable thefts at ECRL sites, as such incidents could disrupt the project's progress.
Earlier, Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) had expressed concern over cable thefts detected at certain locations along the ECRL alignment, which spans Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and Selangor. — Bernama

The 1MDB saga led to the downfall and subsequent jailing of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and ensnared major global banks, including Goldman Sachs. Murdered Cyberjaya student's housemate gave boyfriend keys, access card, says Selangor police chief
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — One of the suspects detained in the murder of Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, a 20-year-old physiotherapy student, was her housemate, according to police in Selangor. The housemate is believed to have given her boyfriend — now the main suspect — access to the student hostel unit in Cyberjaya before the killing took place. At a press conference on Tuesday, Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that preliminary findings indicated the suspect had stayed at the accommodation before and was allowed to return on the night of the murder while his girlfriend, the housemate, was away in her hometown. 'The main suspect had apparently stayed overnight previously,' he was quoted as saying by The Star. 'On the night of the incident, the suspect was given the access card and keys as he wanted to stay there again, while the girlfriend had gone back to her hometown. 'However, he had ill intentions towards the victim that led him to hit her using an object and eventually murder her.' Hussein said a pathology report showed no evidence of rape, although investigators had not ruled out the possibility of sexual assault. 'We are still investigating further to find any proof of sexual assault,' he said. 'We are also investigating the motive behind the murder.' The suspect allegedly stole several items belonging to the victim after the killing, including her laptop, mobile phone and ATM card. 'We discovered that he had withdrawn RM200 using her ATM card,' Comm Hussein added. Police said four individuals — one man and three women aged 19 and 20 — were arrested within 48 hours of the incident in separate operations in Johor Baru and Gemencheh, Negri Sembilan. The case is expected to be handed over to the deputy public prosecutor soon. Maniishapriet, who was originally from Kuching, Sarawak, was found unconscious with visible injuries at her student hostel unit on the morning of June 24. A friend discovered her body at around 10am and alerted authorities. She had been staying alone in the unit since June 21, as her five housemates had left for the holidays. She was preparing for an upcoming exam, according to police. A post-mortem confirmed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

Kuching man gets 12 years, four lashes for incest with 13-year-old niece
KUCHING, July 1 — A 42-year-old man was today sentenced by the Sessions' Court here to 12 years' imprisonment and four strokes of the cane, for committing incest with his 13-year-old niece. Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi handed down the sentence after the man pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 376B(1) of the Penal Code (PC), read together with Section 16 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act (SOACA) 2017. Section 376B(1) of the PC provides for a prison term of not less than 10 years and not more than 30 years, along with whipping, upon conviction. Meanwhile, Section 16 of the SOACA provides for imprisonment not exceeding five years, along with a minimum of two strokes of whipping upon conviction. The offence was committed at house in Petra Jaya here at around 2am on April 4, 2025. According to case facts, the victim disclosed the incident to her mother some time later through a phone call, prompting the latter to lodge a police report that led to the accused's arrest on May 30, 2025. The accused is the mother's elder brother. A medical examination revealed old tears on the victim's hymen. Deputy public prosecutor Umi Syukriah Harun appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented by legal counsel. For the record, the accused is currently serving a sentence for repeated drug abuse offences. — The Borneo Post
