Heera Group's Nowhera Shaik arrested in Haryana, flown back to Hyderabad

The Hindu28-05-2025
Nowhera Shaik, managing director of the Heera Group of Companies and prime accused in the multi-crore Heera Gold investment fraud case, was arrested by the Hyderabad Central Crime Station (CCS) police in Haryana after she evaded court appearances in multiple criminal proceedings.
She was apprehended in the Surajkund police station limits of Haryana on Tuesday (May 27, 2025) while travelling from Delhi to Faridabad. A team of four CCS police personnel from Hyderabad tracked her movements and executed the pending non-bailable warrants (NBWs). She was flown back to Hyderabad on a late-night flight and was shifted to Chanchalguda Central Prison around 4 a.m. on Wednesday (May 28, 2025).
According to CCS deputy commissioner of police N. Swetha, Shaik had failed to appear before the Nampally Sessions Court in connection with three criminal case — one in 2019 and two in 2025. Following her continued non-compliance, the Court issued three non-bailable warrants on April 29, 2025 and she fled Hyderabad thereafter.
Shaik was produced before the Nampally Sessions Court earlier today, where she was remanded to judicial custody until June 3, 2025.
Earlier this year, the Enforcement Directorate provisionally attached properties worth approximately ₹400.06 crore belonging to Shaik and the Heera Group under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, in connection with the investment fraud case.

Supreme Court allows M3M's plea to substitute attached land with commercial units

The Supreme Court has allowed realty developer M3M's plea to substitute land attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), with other commercial property of similar value so that the developer can monetise the land. In it's order on June 30, the SC has said the order 'shall not be treated as precedent'. In July 2024, Directorate of Enforcement (ED), had provisionally attached immovable properties, spanning 88.29 acres and valued at Rs 300.11 crore belonging to M3M India in an ongoing case. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like War Thunder - Register now for free and play against over 75 Million real Players War Thunder Play Now Undo 'While the SC has allowed the substitution of land by the order, the Court has made it categorically clear that this decision would not considered as a precedent. In cases where there is a fact specific adjudication by the SC, it is a usual practice to make it clear for the subordinate Courts that facts of each case would be considered on its own merits and the judgment would not be a binding precedent,' said Ashish K Singh, Managing Partner, Capstone Legal. M3M has given details of 317 commercial units valuing Rs 317 crore which will be attached. Live Events In order to assess the fair market value of the said commercial units, this Directorate engaged valuator registered with Income Tax Department. 'While the land can be monetised and project can offer 10 times revenue than the land value, the value or commercial units are not likely to increase further. The decision will improve M3M's revenue and cash flow and will also help in business continuity,' said a real estate expert. The substitution is subjected to developer following conditions put by ED, which include, submission of no encumbrance certificate, undertaking not to alienate, submission of title documents, indemnity bond, undertaking to safeguard the third party rights created for other commercial units of the project, consent to hand over possession of alternate assets, disclosure of source of acquisition funds, cooperation with investigation and no prejudice to ongoing investigation or trial. 'This is a progressive order and will positively influence other ongoing matters of a similar nature. Notably, the substitution mechanism does not dilute enforcement power under PMLA. Rather, it strengthens procedural fairness and reflects a maturing jurisprudence that understands the real-world implications of criminal law on business continuity,' said Parimal Tripathi of Sutradhar Associates.

Congress Wanted To Usurp Rs 2,000 Crore Assets Of National Herald: ED Tells Delhi Court

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday told a Delhi court that the Congress party wanted to usurp around Rs 2,000 crore assets of the now-defunct National Herald newspaper. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S.V. Raju, representing the ED, submitted before the Rouse Avenue Court that a conspiracy was hatched to form Young Indian Ltd -- in which Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi are majority stakeholders -- to acquire control over the newspaper's vast assets aimed at benefiting the party leadership personally. ASG Raju added that several senior Congress leaders were involved in "fake transactions' made to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the original publisher of the National Herald. According to the ED, individuals were making fraudulent advance rent payments over several years at the direction of senior Congress functionaries with fabricated rent receipts. Special Judge (PC Act) Vishal Gogne is handling the alleged National Herald money laundering case on a day-to-day basis, hearing submissions on behalf of the Central agency and the proposed accused, including Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, Congress Overseas Chief Sam Pitroda, and Suman Dubey. In an earlier hearing, ASG Raju had claimed that the Gandhis have enjoyed Rs 142 crore of 'proceeds of crime' and continued to derive benefits from it until the ED attached National Herald assets. As per the ED, the accused committed money laundering not only when they acquired the 'proceeds of crime" but also when they continued to hold it. Before this, the Rouse Avenue Courts had asked the Gandhis and others accused to show cause as to why cognisance should not be taken on ED's prosecution complaint filed against them under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The charge sheet claimed that the Congress leadership had misappropriated property belonging to the AJL by converting public trusts into personal assets. The National Herald, a newspaper established by Jawaharlal Nehru and other prominent leaders in 1938, was originally aimed at representing the liberal voice within the Congress. Published by AJL, the National Herald was a critical tool for Congress during the freedom struggle and post-independence years. Alongside the English publication, the AJL also published newspapers in Hindi and Urdu. However, the paper ceased operations in 2008 due to mounting debts exceeding Rs 90 crore. The controversy over its assets came into focus in 2012 when BJP leader Subramanian Swamy filed a complaint in a trial court, alleging that Congress leaders had engaged in cheating and breach of trust in the process of acquiring AJL. In the course of the investigation, the ED found that the accused, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, used Young Indian to acquire AJL's assets at a nominal price of Rs 50 lakh. The probe agency claimed that Young Indian, beneficially owned by the Gandhis, effectively took control of AJL's properties while undervaluing their market worth. In November 2023, the ED attached immovable properties valued at Rs 661 crore and AJL shares worth Rs 90.2 crore, terming them suspected proceeds of crime.

‘Scandalous, Contemptuous': Allahabad HC Dismisses Plea Accusing Trial Judge Of Bribery

Last Updated: The bench of Justice Subhash Vidyarthi said that the allegations were not only false and vague but also appeared to be a calculated attempt to delay judicial proceedings. The Allahabad High Court (Lucknow Bench) recently dismissed a plea by former LACFEDD Managing Director Brahma Prakash Singh seeking transfer of a money laundering trial on allegations that the special judge demanded a Rs 1 crore bribe for his acquittal. The bench of Justice Subhash Vidyarthi said that the allegations were not only false and vague but also appeared to be a calculated attempt to delay judicial proceedings. Singh, who is facing trial under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) based on a 2018 Enforcement Directorate (ED) complaint, had approached the high court under Article 226 of the Constitution challenging the sessions court's refusal to transfer the case. Court noted that Singh had been convicted earlier in a corruption case and was currently out on bail during the pendency of his appeal. The bribery allegation against the special judge surfaced for the first time in December 2024—nearly three months after the alleged demand was made in court, and notably after the trial court had passed multiple orders against him. 'Apparently, the transfer application has been devised to avoid facing trial before the court," the high court observed. The sessions judge, who earlier rejected Singh's transfer request, had sought comments from the trial judge. The latter outright denied the bribery allegations, stating that no such interaction could have occurred without the presence of court staff and prosecutors. He also accused Singh and his counsel of trying to mount pressure on the court and disrupt proceedings. Singh's counsel, who admitted to receiving the alleged bribe demand by the special judge, told the high court that he delayed reporting it to avoid conflict with a judicial officer. However, the high court found this explanation implausible and inconsistent with conduct expected from a legal professional. What drew even sharper judicial rebuke were Singh's allegations against a sitting high court judge. The transfer application claimed that Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan had deliberately refused to pass an interim order in a Section 482 CrPC plea, even though the petition had merit. Justice Vidyarthi termed these claims 'scandalous and contemptuous," reiterating the Supreme Court's precedent that statements recorded in judicial orders cannot be questioned by extraneous evidence. 'I find myself in complete agreement with the view taken by the learned sessions judge," the bench held, adding that Singh's writ petition lacked merit and deserved outright dismissal.
